A search for neutrino and antineutrino events correlated with 2350 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is performed with Borexino data collected between December 2007 and November 2015. No statistically ...significant excess over background is observed. We look for electron antineutrinos (ν¯e) that inverse beta decay on protons with energies from 1.8 MeV to 15 MeV and set the best limit on the neutrino fluence from GRBs below 8 MeV. The signals from neutrinos and antineutrinos from GRBs that scatter on electrons are also searched for, a detection channel made possible by the particularly radio-pure scintillator of Borexino. We obtain currently the best limits on the neutrino fluence of all flavors and species below 7 MeV. Finally, time correlations between GRBs and bursts of events are investigated. Our analysis combines two semi-independent data acquisition systems for the first time: the primary Borexino readout optimized for solar neutrino physics up to a few MeV, and a fast waveform digitizer system tuned for events above 1 MeV.
Stars are fuelled by the fusion of hydrogen into helium via two processes: the ‘‘
pp
chain’’ and the ‘‘CNO cycle.’’ Neutrinos emitted in the core of the Sun are the only direct probe for the ...investigation of such processes. The Borexino experiment has performed a complete spectroscopy of the neutrinos from the ‘‘
pp
chain,’’ and has recently reported the first experimental evidence of neutrinos from the CNO cycle, never observed before, being this process subdominant in the Sun (about 1% of the solar energy). This experimental evidence of the CNO neutrinos was obtained using the highly radiopure large-volume liquid-scintillator detector of Borexino. Advances in the thermal stabilization of the detector over the last five years enabled us to exploit a method to constrain the rate of Bi-210 contaminating the scintillator, the main background for such a measurement. Since the CNO cycle is dominant in massive starts, this result proves the evidence of the primary mechanism for the stellar conversion of hydrogen into helium in the Universe.
The cosmic silence of the underground Gran Sasso laboratory together with the exceptional radio purity of the liquid scintillator, has allowed Borexino to investigate the radiogenic heating of the ...Earth’s interior and to contribute to various fields of experimental neutrino astronomy. This contribution is aimed to summarize the results obtained by Borexino on geo-neutrinos and on possible extra-terrestrial sources of antineutrinos such as supernovae explosions and solar flares.
The Borexino experiment, located in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy and widely known for its rich Solar Neutrino physics program, has recently celebrated the 10 years of data taking. ...Among the achievements of the Borexino experiment solar program are: a precision measurement of 7Be neutrino flux with uncertainty of 3%, limit on its day/night asymmetry, first spectral measurement of pp-neutrinos, first evidence of monoenergetic pep neutrinos at 5 sigma, 8B neutrinos detection with the lowest visible energy threshold of 3 MeV, observation of season modulation of the 7Be solar neutrino rate at 3.8 sigma and the best current limit on CNO neutrino flux. Borexino is now in its high-purity Phase II data taking, thanks to intense purification campaigns of scintillator in 2010-11 that were very successful in further reducing the already low backgrounds. The advanced tecniques of data analysis were improved, allowing to maximize the signal/noise ratio. The detector was thermally insulated in order to improve the fluid stability. As an outcome, quality of the data has significantly increased leading to new levels of sensitivity to all solar neutrino fluxes. This allows a more sensitive probe for CNO neutrinos relevant to the solar metallicity problem.

The prototype of an industrial reactor antineutrino detector iDREAM is constructed to demonstrate the capability of real-time remote monitoring of PWR operation by the neutrino method.
We present the evidence for the seasonal modulation of the 7Be neutrino interaction rate with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. The period, amplitude, and ...phase of the observed time evolution of the signal are consistent with its solar origin, and the absence of an annual modulation is rejected at 99.99% C.L. The data are analyzed using three methods: the analytical fit to event rate, the Lomb-Scargle and the Empirical Mode Decomposition techniques, which all yield results in excellent agreement.
Despite the fact that the electric charge conservation law is confirmed by many experiments, search for its possible violation remains a way of searching for physics beyond the Standard Model. ...Experimental searches for the electric charge non-conservation mainly consider electron decays into neutral particles. The Borexino experiment is an excellent tool for the electron decay search due to the highest radiopurity among all the existing experiments, large detector mass, and good sensitivity at low energies. The process considered in this study is a decay into a photon and a neutrino, for which a new lower limit on the electron lifetime is obtained. This is the best electron lifetime limit up to date, exceeding the previous one obtained at the Borexino prototype at two orders of magnitude.
The large size and the very low radioactive background of solar neutrino detectors such as Borexino at the Gran Sasso Laboratory in Italy offer a unique opportunity to probe the existence of neutrino ...oscillations into new sterile components by means of carefully designed and well calibrated anti-neutrino and neutrino artificial sources. In this paper we briefly summarise the key elements of the SOX experiment, a program for the search of sterile neutrinos (and other short distance effects) by means of a 144Ce-144Pr anti-neutrino source and, possibly in the medium term future, with a 51Cr neutrino source.
