Abstract
This study investigates the dictionary use of graduates in English and German as well as their attitudes towards teaching and learning dictionary skills in the classroom. The first section ...of the paper offers a historical overview of research on dictionary use and dictionary didactics in Hungary. This is followed by the detailed description of the quantitative research, which aims to investigate the participants’ (n=197) self-reported preferences and attitudes regarding dictionary use, their dictionary consultation behaviour, and the role of dictionaries as an aid to language learning and teaching. The research results partly confirm the trends revealed in previous international studies (e.g. increased use of online tools, reluctance to pay for dictionaries, low prestige of teaching dictionary use); they also show that there is a need for dictionary use skills to be taught from an early age and for placing a special emphasis on features and search strategies in the case of digital dictionaries. Based on these findings, the authors plan to design a core ‘dictionary skills’ module (with teaching aids and handbooks), which could be incorporated into a variety of courses in tertiary education.
Abstract Using dictionaries has been seen as an important aspect of L2 learning at all levels of L2 proficiency. Yet, in many cases dictionary use seems a considerably neglected part of L2 teaching. ...There is no doubt, however, that L2 learners should be encouraged to use dictionaries independently and autonomously, as they will be unable to rely on language teachers or other proficient L2 speakers to assist them throughout their whole lives. Using Dörnyei’s (2005) L2 Motivational Self System (L2MSS) framework, this quantitative study (N=925) investigates the interrelationship between L2 learning motivation, willingness to pay for dictionaries, reading dictionaries’ usage guides and willingness to use dictionaries. The accumulated data were analysed through structural equation modelling (SEM). Even though not necessarily generalisable to other contexts, the results show that EFL learning motivation has an impact on willingness to buy dictionaries and willingness to use dictionaries. Our data reveal that in the L2MSS, two components (motivated language learning behaviour and the ideal L2 self) have an impact on attitudes to dictionary use.
Abstract Bible concordances lead Bible readers with rendering words and phrases of the Holy Bible in alphabetical listings and show where the terms occur throughout all books of Scripture. With ...cross-references for verses, concordances make it easy to understand the meaning of terms and the context in which those words are used. In Hungarian Bible studies several translations of the Bible are available (also online) and some of the contemporary translations are provided with on-the-fly concordances. Online versions of the Bible translations can easily build KWIC-concordances but not in an equal way. The study shows different approaches to online Bible concordance of the Hungarian translations to be found online and also tries to illustrate bottlenecks of concordance making on the off-line concordance being built to the so called ÚRK Bible (Újonnan Revideált Biblia – Newly Revised Bible). The obstacles in this concordance are connected with terminological and lexicographic approaches as this concordance is based on translations of the keywords of the ESV Bible Concordance.
Abstract Due to the spread of the communicative language teaching method language learners were often encouraged not to use a dictionary but rather infer the meaning of a word or phrase from its ...context. Proper dictionary use, however, is now seen as an important element of autonomous and life-long language learning. The present research used the quantitative research paradigm and a self-prepared questionnaire ( n = 925) to investigate attitudes towards dictionary use in the case of university students studying languages for business. The study investigated participants' willingness to use and pay for dictionaries and their willingness to read usage guides in dictionaries. Our results show that participants typically use a dictionary if they do not know the meaning of a word or phrase, but are reluctant to buy a dictionary and are likewise unwilling to read the information guides in dictionaries. Our results also reveal that willingness to pay for dictionaries is positively influenced by willingness to use dictionaries, willingness to read usage guides in dictionaries and language learners' age.
Abstract The Termini Online Hungarian–Hungarian Dictionary and Database describes the lexicon of the Hungarian language as spoken in the countries neighbouring Hungary. It is considered to be a ...general dictionary of present-day Hungarian. Each entry contains authentic example sentences to illustrate the use of the headword, making it possible to examine the special use of a word or construction in a grammatical and pragmatic context. The lexicographical database is edited online in eight countries. The editors of the dictionary are members of the Termini Hungarian Language Research Network. Online editing makes it possible for the dictionary to expand – even simultaneously – as a result of activity in eight countries. In the present study, the authors review the novelties and peculiarities of the dictionary in some detail, touching on the following topics: dictionary structure, IT support, database character, multimedia elements, and labelling system.
A nyelvtanulás során használt segédkönyvek (referenciaművek) közül a szótárakat kellene az elsők között használni. A megfelelő szótárhasználati készséggel rendelkező diákok így később, a közoktatás ...magasabb szintjein is könnyebben férnek hozzá más segédkönyvek információihoz. Kutatások adatai szerint azonban a szótárhasználati kompetenciák fejlesztése sokszor elmarad a hazai közoktatásban. A hiányosságokat felismerve egyre többen egyetértenek azzal, hogy a szótárhasználatot be kellene építeni a tanmenetbe, így a pedagógusok segítenének áthidalni a lexikográfusok és a szótárhasználók közti szakadékot. Jelen tanulmány a Károli Gáspár Református Egyetem (KRE) Anglisztika Intézetének lexikográfiai kurzusát mutatja be, amelyben többféle gyakorlattal illusztrálja a szótárhasználati készségek fejlesztését – az élethosszig tartó tanulás ezen nélkülözhetetlen elemét –, a biztosabb nyelvi tudás kiaknázását.
A szótárak fontossága megkérdőjelezhetetlen a nyelvtanulás során.
