Se evaluó el efecto del aceite esencial de orégano (AEO) y bagazo de orégano (BO) incorporados en la dieta sobre los parámetros productivos, variables de sacrificio y calidad de la carne de conejos. ...Un total de 100 conejos (30 d de edad) fueron distribuidos en seis tratamientos T1: control, T2: 0.25 g/kg de AEO, T3: 0.40 g/kg de AEO, T4: 20% de BO, T5: 0.25 g/kg de AEO + 20% de BO y T6: 0.40 g / kg de AE + 20% de BO. El mayor peso vivo fue el T6 (P˂0.0001). En 37, 44 y 51 días, T3 presentó el menor consumo de alimento (P=0.0089) y T6 tuvo la mejor ganancia de peso (P=0.0172). La conversión alimenticia fue mejor (P=0.0138) en T5 a los 37 días. El rendimiento de la canal fría y lomo fue más alto en T2, T4 y T5 (P<0.001). El pH incrementó (P=0.0190) en 10 días post mortem para T1, T4, T5 y T6. La capacidad de retención de agua fue mayor (P=0.0500) en T2, T4 y T6; a* aumentó (P<0.0004) en el día 10 post mortem, y b* fue menor (P˂0.0430) en T2 a 24 h y 10 días post mortem. En conclusión, 0.25 y 0.40 g/kg de AEO con 20% de BO influyeron positivamente en el comportamiento productivo, variables de sacrificio, características de la canal y calidad de la carne de conejo.
INTRODUCTION
While Latin America (LatAm) is facing an increasing burden of dementia due to the rapid aging of the population, it remains underrepresented in dementia research, diagnostics, and care.
...METHODS
In 2023, the Alzheimer's Association hosted its eighth satellite symposium in Mexico, highlighting emerging dementia research, priorities, and challenges within LatAm.
RESULTS
Significant initiatives in the region, including intracountry support, showcased their efforts in fostering national and international collaborations; genetic studies unveiled the unique genetic admixture in LatAm; researchers conducting emerging clinical trials discussed ongoing culturally specific interventions; and the urgent need to harmonize practices and studies, improve diagnosis and care, and use affordable biomarkers in the region was highlighted.
DISCUSSION
The myriad of topics discussed at the 2023 AAIC satellite symposium highlighted the growing research efforts in LatAm, providing valuable insights into dementia biology, genetics, epidemiology, treatment, and care.
SNAT has an important physiological role in the provision of amino acids that may enter the gluconeogenic pathway in liver. However, SNAT2 transcriptional regulation by carbohydrates has not been ...studied. The objective of this study was to determine the acute response to 70% sucrose diet (high sucrose diet, HSD) or 10% sucrose diet (low sucrose diet, LSD) on hepatic SNAT2 expression. Wistar rats fed HSD showed a decrease of hepatic SNAT2 mRNA and protein expression compared with rats fed LSD or fasted rats. Also, we found a decrease SNAT2 mRNA expression in rat hepatocytes primary culture or HepG2 cells incubated with 25 mM versus 5 mM glucose. SNAT2 promoter mapping showed a putative carbohydrate response element (ChoRE). A construct containing this site was ligated in a luciferase vector for functional studies in HepG2 cell line. Promoter activity was decreased when transfection was performed with 25 mM versus 5 mM glucose. Specific protein‐DNA complexes were detected by EMSA indicating that the carbohydrate response element‐binding protein (ChREBP) binds to ChoRE in the SNAT2 promoter. These results showed that sucrose‐fed rats decrease hepatic SNAT2 expression through ChREBP.

Healthcare-associated infections are one of the major concerns worldwide. This study presents the development and the validation process of the InovSafeCare scale and aimed at identifying and ...measuring the ecosystem variables related to healthcare-associated infection (HCAI) prevention and control practices in European nurse students. Qualitative and quantitative approaches were used to (1) elaborate an item pool related to the educational environment, the healthcare setting environment, and the attitudes, beliefs, and performance of the nursing students regarding HCAI prevention and control and (2) analyze psychometric properties of the scale using factor analysis. The validated InovSafeCare scale was applied to undergraduate nursing students of five European Higher Education Institutions. The partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) method with SMART-PLS3 software was used. The study sample consists of 657 nursing students, who responded a self-report inventory. From the analyzed data were identified 14 factors. The InovSafeCare scale reveals good validity and reliability of the dimensions in different European countries.
The clinical relevance of genetic variants in nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is unsettled.
The study sought to assess the prognostic impact of disease-causing genetic variants in DCM.
...Baseline and longitudinal clinical data from 1,005 genotyped DCM probands were retrospectively collected at 20 centers. A total of 372 (37%) patients had pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants (genotype positive) and 633 (63%) were genotype negative. The primary endpoint was a composite of major adverse cardiovascular events. Secondary endpoints were end-stage heart failure (ESHF), malignant ventricular arrhythmia (MVA), and left ventricular reverse remodeling (LVRR).
After a median follow-up of 4.04 years (interquartile range: 1.70-7.50 years), the primary endpoint had occurred in 118 (31.7%) patients in the genotype-positive group and in 125 (19.8%) patients in the genotype-negative group (hazard ratio HR: 1.51; 95% confidence interval CI: 1.17-1.94; P = 0.001). ESHF occurred in 60 (16.1%) genotype-positive patients and in 55 (8.7%) genotype-negative patients (HR: 1.67; 95% CI: 1.16-2.41; P = 0.006). MVA occurred in 73 (19.6%) genotype-positive patients and in 77 (12.2%) genotype-negative patients (HR: 1.50; 95% CI: 1.09-2.07; P = 0.013). LVRR occurred in 39.6% in the genotype-positive group and in 46.2% in the genotype-negative group (P = 0.047). Among individuals with baseline left ventricular ejection fraction ≤35%, genotype-positive patients exhibited more major adverse cardiovascular events, ESHF, and MVA than their genotype-negative peers (all P < 0.02). LVRR and clinical outcomes varied depending on the underlying affected gene.
In this study, DCM patients with pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants had worse prognosis than genotype-negative individuals. Clinical course differed depending on the underlying affected gene.

In most eukaryotic cells, the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is transmitted uniparentally and present in multiple copies derived from the clonal expansion of maternally inherited mtDNA. All copies are ...therefore near-identical, or homoplasmic. The presence of >1 mtDNA variant in the same cytoplasm can arise naturally or result from new medical technologies aimed at preventing mitochondrial genetic diseases and improving fertility. The latter is called divergent nonpathologic mtDNA heteroplasmy (DNPH). We hypothesized that DNPH is maladaptive and usually prevented by the cell.
We engineered and characterized DNPH mice throughout their lifespan using transcriptomic, metabolomic, biochemical, physiologic, and phenotyping techniques. We focused on in vivo imaging techniques for noninvasive assessment of cardiac and pulmonary energy metabolism.
We show that DNPH impairs mitochondrial function, with profound consequences in critical tissues that cannot resolve heteroplasmy, particularly cardiac and skeletal muscle. Progressive metabolic stress in these tissues leads to severe pathology in adulthood, including pulmonary hypertension and heart failure, skeletal muscle wasting, frailty, and premature death. Symptom severity is strongly modulated by the nuclear context.
Medical interventions that may generate DNPH should address potential incompatibilities between donor and recipient mtDNA.
Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria have become one of the most important health problems. We aimed to assess whether international travel may facilitate their spread through the colonization of ...asymptomatic travelers. A cross-sectional study was conducted (November 2018 to February 2022). Pharyngeal and rectal swabs were obtained from long-term travelers and recently arrived migrants from non-European countries, and an epidemiological survey was performed. Colonization by Gram-negative bacteria and methicillin-resistant
(MRSA) was determined by chromogenic media and MALDI-TOF-MS. Resistance mechanisms were determined by the biochip-based molecular biology technique. Risk factors for colonization were assessed by logistic regression. In total, 122 participants were included: 59 (48.4%) recently arrived migrants and 63 (51.6%) long-term travelers. After their trip, 14 (11.5%) participants-5 (8.5%) migrants and 9 (14.3%) travelers-had rectal colonization by one MDR bacterium.
carrying the extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) CTX-M-15 was the most frequent. No participants were colonized by MRSA or carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae. The only risk factor independently associated with MDR bacterial colonization was previous hospital attention OR, 95% CI: 10.16 (2.06-50.06). The risk of colonization by MDR bacteria among recently arrived migrants and long-term travelers is similar in both groups and independently associated with previous hospital attention.

In this new multicenter study we evaluated immunohistochemistry expression in 76 patients with advanced PanNET who were treated with capecitabine-temozolomide or everolimus. Based on the immunohistochemistry panel, an immunohistochemistry prognostic score (IPS) was developed.
In patients treated with capecitabine and temozolomide, low IPS was an independent prognostic factor for progression-free-survival and overall-survival. Similar findings were observed with highest IPS for overall-survival in patients treated with everolimus.
From our knowledge, it is the first time that a simple IPS could be useful to predict outcome for patients with metastatic pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors treated with everolimus or capecitabine and temozolomide.
Galphimia spp. is popularly used in Mexican traditional medicine. Some populations of Galphimia exert anxiolytic and sedative effects due to the presence of the modified triterpenoids galphimines. ...However, the galphimine synthesis pathway has not yet been elucidated. Hence, in this study, a comparative transcriptome analysis between two contrasting populations of Galphimia spp., a galphimine-producer, and a non-galphimine-producer, is performed using RNA-Seq in the Illumina Next Seq 550 platform to identify putative candidates genes that encode enzymes of this metabolic pathway. Transcriptome functional annotation was performed using the Blast2GO in levels of gene ontology. For differential expression analysis, edgeR, pheatmap, and Genie3 library were used. To validate transcriptome data, qPCR was conducted. In producer and non-producer plants of both populations of Galphimia spp., most of the transcripts were grouped in the Molecular Function level of gene ontology. A total of 680 differentially expressed transcripts between producer and non-producer plants were detected. In galphimine-producer plants, a larger number of highly expressed transcripts related to acyclic and polycyclic terpene synthesis were identified. As putative candidate genes involved in the galphimine synthesis pathway, P450 family members and enzymes with kinase activity were identified.
