Gabriela Mistral and Victoria Ocampo were the two most influential and respected women writers of twentieth-century Latin America. Mistral, a plain, self-educated Chilean woman of the mountains who ...was a poet, journalist, and educator, became Latin America’s first Nobel Laureate in 1945. Ocampo, a stunning Argentine woman of wealth, wrote hundreds of essays and founded the first-rate literary journal Sur. Though of very different backgrounds, their deep commitment to what they felt was “their” America forged a unique intellectual and emotional bond between them. This collection of the previously unpublished correspondence between Mistral and Ocampo reveals the private side of two very public women. In these letters (as well as in essays that are included in an appendix), we see what Mistral and Ocampo thought about each other and about the intellectual and political atmosphere of their time (including the Spanish Civil War, World War II, and the dictatorships of Latin America) and particularly how they negotiated the complex issues of identity, nationality, and gender within their wide-ranging cultural connections to both the Americas and Europe.

El aporte fundamental del libro radica en la valorización del elemento metapoético y autorreflexivo en las poetas hispanoamericanas, ya que la investigación en torno al arte poética y a la metapoesía se ha centrado ante todo, hasta hoy, en autores masculinos. Con sus acercamientos a Gabriela Mistral, Claribel Alegría, Ana Enriqueta Terán, Carilda Oliver, Amanda Berenguer, Fina García Marruz, Rosario Castellanos, Susana Thénon, Carmen Ollé, Cristina Peri Rossi, Reina María Rodríguez, Tamara Kamenszain, Cristina Rivera Garza, entre otras, el libro pretende contribuir a abrir el canon metapoético a la escritura de las mujeres.

En este trabajo se ofrece un acercamiento explicativo al surgimiento del nominalismo medieval desde la perspectiva planteada por el historiador argentino José Luis Romero. Romero sugiere que existe ...una doble fuente, a saber, una histórica y otra filosófica. La primera de esas sería de orden empírico y correspondería a la burguesía y a su mentalidad. La segunda fuente, la académica, sería la que surge de la conocida querella de los universales durante los siglos XI y XII. Estas dos fuentes habrían sido la condición de posibilidad de posteriores desarrollos teóricos del nominalismo, los cuales suprimirán la idea de universal como algo real y sostendrán que lo único real son las cosas concretas, sensibles, mientras que los conceptos constituyen palabras vacías.

¡América, América! ¡Todo por ella; porque nos vendrá de ella desdicha o bien!
Somos aún México, Venezuela, Chile, el azteca-español, el quechuaespañol, el araucano-español; pero seremos mañana, ...cuando la desgracia nos haga crujir entre su dura quijada, un solo dolor y no más que un anhelo.
Maestro: enseña en tu clase el sueño de Bolívar, el vidente primero. Clávalo en el alma de tus discípulos con agudo garfio de convencimiento. Divulga la América, su Bello, su Sarmiento, su Lastarria, su Martí. No seas un ebrio de Europa, un embriagado de lo lejano, por lejano extraño, y además caduco, de hermosa caduquez fatal.
Describe tu América. Haz amar la luminosa meseta mexicana, la verde estepa de Venezuela, la negra selva austral. Dilo todo de tu América; di cómo se canta en la pampa argentina, cómo se arranca la perla en el Caribe, cómo se puebla de blancos la Patagonia.
Periodista: Ten la justicia para tu América total. No desprestigies a Nicaragua, para exaltar a Cuba; ni a Cuba para exaltar la Argentina. Piensa en que llegará la hora en que seamos uno, y entonces tu siembra de desprecio o de sarcasmo te morderá en carne propia.
Artista: Muestra en tu obra la capacidad de finura, la capacidad de sutileza, de exquisitez y hondura a la par, que tenemos. Exprime a tu Lugones, a tu Valencia, a tu Darío y a tu Nervo: Cree en nuestra sensibilidad que puede vibrar como la otra, manar como la otra la gota cristalina y breve de la obra perfecta.
Industrial: Ayúdanos tú a vencer, o siquiera a detener la invasión que llaman inofensiva y que es fatal, de la América rubia que quiere vendérnoslo todo, poblarnos los campos y las ciudades de sus maquinarias, sus telas, hasta de lo que tenemos y no sabemos explotar. Instruye a tu obrero, instruye a tus químicos y a tus ingenieros. Industrial: tú deberías ser el jefe de esta cruzada que abandonas a los idealistas.
¿Odio al yankee? ¡No! Nos está venciendo, nos está arrollando por culpa nuestra, por nuestra languidez tórrida, por nuestro fatalismo indio. Nos está disgregando por obra de algunas de sus virtudes y de todos nuestros vicios raciales. ¿Por qué le odiaríamos? Que odiemos lo que en nosotros nos hace vulnerables a su clavo de acero y de oro: a su voluntad y a su opulencia.
Dirijamos toda la actividad como una flecha hacia este futuro ineludible: la América Española una, unificada por dos cosas estupendas: la lengua que le dio Dios y el Dolor que da el Norte.
Nosotros ensoberbecimos a ese Norte con nuestra inercia; nosotros estamos creando, con nuestra pereza, su opulencia; nosotros le estamos haciendo aparecer, con nuestros odios mezquinos, sereno y hasta justo.
Discutimos incansablemente, mientras él hace, ejecuta; nos despedazamos, mientras él se oprime, como una carne joven, se hace duro y formidable, suelda de vínculos sus estados de mar a mar; hablamos, alegamos, mientras él siembra, funde, asierra, labra, multiplica, forja; crea con fuego, tierra, aire, agua; crea minuto a minuto, educa en su propia fe y se hace por esa fe divino e invencible.

A translation of an essay by Gabriela Mistral is presented.It is no overstatement to say that my greatest joy in Europe has been provided by superior crafts of this land; complete, perfect crafts. ...Definition of the craftsman: one who thoroughly works leather, or silver, or gold, or wood. I will add, one who works the mutton's skin or the meek poplar wood with the same rule under which the artists of the so called "fine arts" did —with a certain petulance, in privilege The rule coming from them is as follows: a flaming mind, a steady pulse, no alcohol, a hand as agile and as easy as the soul; a bit of rite and a bit of play; namely, the solemnity of the father as he composes and the cheer of the son when the feat is achieved; and a great pride, whether the work is signed or unsigned, equal pride. Among the disgraces of America is to have, in some places, few craftsmen, and some others that have not even seen them born. We mistake the craftsman for the worker, the gardener for the "weeder," the blacksmith for the steelworker. The humble continent sends silver to Europe's jewelers while it still has not seen the training of its own silversmiths. What if we were to consider craft as our greatest testament? We are assessed in our ways in friendship and love, in the choice of a political party or a faith But these are all partial and vague testimonies. The way we bind a book or teach at a school is an echo of our very own features. The worker can say what Christ said of himself: "Let my actions speak for me".
El presente trabajo intenta una aproximación a la aparente tensión que existe entre el concepto de propiedad privada planteado por Tomás Moro en Utopia (1516) y lo desarrollado por el Magisterio ...Católico. Así mismo, revisaremos lo propuesto por la Teología de la Liberación, quienes afirman superar esta oposición y reconciliar fe y marxismo.
