This paper presents a new approach for watermarking of digital images providing robustness to geometrical distortions. The weaknesses of classical watermarking methods to geometrical distortions are ...outlined first. Geometrical distortions can be decomposed into two classes: global transformations such as rotations and translations and local transformations such as the StirMark attack. An overview of existing self-synchronizing schemes is then presented. Theses schemes can use periodical properties of the mark, invariant properties of transforms, template insertion, or information provided by the original image to counter geometrical distortions. Thereafter, a new class of watermarking schemes using the image content is presented. We propose an embedding and detection scheme where the mark is bound with a content descriptor defined by salient points. Three different types of feature points are studied and their robustness to geometrical transformations is evaluated to develop an enhanced detector. The embedding of the signature is done by extracting feature points of the image and performing a Delaunay tessellation on the set of points. The mark is embedded using a classical additive scheme inside each triangle of the tessellation. The detection is done using correlation properties on the different triangles. The performance of the presented scheme is evaluated after JPEG compression, geometrical attack and transformations. Results show that the fact that the scheme is robust to these different manipulations. Finally, in our concluding remarks, we analyze the different perspectives of such content-based watermarking scheme.
The need for reversible or lossless watermarking methods has been highlighted in the literature to associate subliminal management information with losslessly processed media and to enable their ...authentication. The paper first analyzes the specificity and the application scope of lossless watermarking methods. It explains why early attempts to achieve reversibility are not satisfactory. They are restricted to well-chosen images, strictly lossless context and/or suffer from annoying visual artifacts. Circular interpretation of bijective transformations is proposed to implement a method that fulfills all quality and functionality requirements of lossless watermarking. Results of several bench tests demonstrate the validity of the approach.

In this paper, we present a new scheme for digital steganography of three-dimensional (3-D) triangle meshes. This scheme is robust against translation, rotation, and scaling operations. It is based ...on a substitutive procedure in the spatial domain. The key idea is to consider a triangle as a two-state geometrical object. We discuss its performance in terms of capacity, complexity, visibility, and security. We validate the use of a principal component analysis (PCA) to make our scheme signal-dependent in the line of second generation watermarking scheme. We also define a simple specific metric for distortion evaluation that has been validated by many tests. We conclude by giving some other solutions, including open steganographic schemes that could be derived from the basic ideas presented here.

To target mobile tumors in radiotherapy with the recent MR-Linac hardware solutions, research is being conducted to drive a 3D motion model with 2D cine-MRI to reproduce the breathing motion in 4D. This work presents a method to combine several deformation fields using local measures to better drive 3D motion models.
The method uses weight maps, each representing the proximity with a specific area of interest. The breathing state is evaluated on cine-MRI frames in these areas and a different deformation field is estimated for each using a 2D to 3D motion model. The different deformation fields are multiplied by their respective weight maps and combined to form the final field to apply to a reference image. A global motion model is adjusted locally on the selected areas and creates a 3DCT for each cine-MRI frame.
The 13 patients on which it was tested showed on average an improvement of the accuracy of our model of 0.71 mm for areas selected to drive the model and 0.5 mm for other areas compared to our previous method without local adjustment. The additional computation time for each region was around 40 ms on a modern laptop.
The method improves the accuracy of the2D-based driving of 3D motion models. It can be used on top of existing methods relying on deformation fields. It does add some computation time but, depending on the area to deform and the number of regions of interests, offers the potential of online use.
Proton range random and systematic uncertainties are the major factors undermining the advantages of proton therapy, namely, a sharp dose falloff and a better dose conformality for lower doses in ...normal tissues. The influence of CT artifacts such as beam hardening or scatter can easily be understood and estimated due to their large-scale effects on the CT image, like cupping and streaks. In comparison, the effects of weakly-correlated stochastic noise are more insidious and less attention is drawn on them partly due to the common belief that they only contribute to proton range uncertainties and not to systematic errors thanks to some averaging effects. A new source of systematic errors on the range and relative stopping powers (RSP) has been highlighted and proved not to be negligible compared to the 3.5% uncertainty reference value used for safety margin design. Hence, we demonstrate that the angular points in the HU-to-RSP calibration curve are an intrinsic source of proton range systematic error for typical levels of zero-mean stochastic CT noise. Systematic errors on RSP of up to 1% have been computed for these levels. We also show that the range uncertainty does not generally vary linearly with the noise standard deviation. We define a noise-dependent effective calibration curve that better describes, for a given material, the RSP value that is actually used. The statistics of the RSP and the range continuous slowing down approximation (CSDA) have been analytically derived for the general case of a calibration curve obtained by the stoichiometric calibration procedure. These models have been validated against actual CSDA simulations for homogeneous and heterogeneous synthetical objects as well as on actual patient CTs for prostate and head-and-neck treatment planning situations.
Robust signal hashing defines a feature vector that characterizes the signal, independently of "nonsignificant" distortions of its content. When dealing with images, the considered distortions are ...typically due to compression or small geometrical manipulations. In other words, robustness means that images that are visually indistinguishable should produce equal or similar hash values. To discriminate image contents, a hash function should produce distinct outputs for different images. Our paper first proposes a robust hashing algorithm for still images. It is based on radial projection of the image pixels and is denoted the Radial hASHing (RASH) algorithm. Experimental results provided on the USC-SIPI dataset reveal that the proposed RASH feature vector is more robust and provides much stronger discrimination than a conventional histogram-based feature vector. The RASH vector appears to be a good candidate to build indexing algorithms, copy-detection systems, or content-based authentication mechanisms. To take benefit from the RASH vector capabilities, video content is summarized into key frames, each of them characterizing a video shot and described by its RASH vector. The resulting video hashing system works in real time and supports most distortions due to common spatial and temporal video distortions.
Digital watermarking consists of hiding subliminal information into digital media content, also called host data. It can be the basis of many applications, including security and media asset ...management. In this paper we focus on the imperceptibility requirement for image watermarking. We first provide a functional inventory of image watermarking applications and emphasize the dependency between the application purpose and its need for invisibility. Then, we present a global framework common to most existing watermarking systems. It illustrates the methodology followed to translate human vision research into watermarking technology. It suggests future prospects and highlights the need for dedicated inputs from the human vision community.
In this paper, we present the development of an axial aircraft wake vortex light detection and ranging (LIDAR) sensor, working in Mie scattering regime, based on pulsed 1.5-mu m high-brightness ...large-core fiber amplifier. An end-to-end Doppler heterodyne LIDAR simulator is used for the LIDAR design. The simulation includes the observation geometry, the wake vortex velocity image, the scanning pattern, the LIDAR instrument, the wind turbulence outside the vortex, and the signal processing. An innovative high-brightness pulsed 1.5-mum laser source is described, based on a master oscillator power fiber amplifier (MOPFA) architecture with a large-core fiber. The obtained beam quality is excellent (M super(2) = 1.3), and achieved pulsed energy is 120 muJ with a pulse repetition frequency of 12 kHz and a pulse duration of 800 ns. A Doppler heterodyne LIDAR is developed based on this laser source with a high-isolation free-space circulator. The LIDAR includes a real-time display of the wind field. Wind dispersion is postprocessed. Field tests carried out at Orly airport in April 2008 are reported. Axial aircraft wake vortex signatures have been successfully observed and acquired at a range of 1.2 km with axial resolution of 75 m for the first time with fiber laser source.
We present a new algorithm for the nonrigid registration of three-dimensional magnetic resonance (MR) intraoperative image sequences showing brain shift. The algorithm tracks key surfaces of objects ...(cortical surface and the lateral ventricles) in the image sequence using a deformable surface matching algorithm. The volumetric deformation field of the objects is then inferred from the displacements at the boundary surfaces using a linear elastic biomechanical finite-element model. Two experiments on synthetic image sequences are presented, as well as an initial experiment on intraoperative MR images showing brain shift. The results of the registration algorithm show a good correlation of the internal brain structures after deformation, and a good capability of measuring surface as well as subsurface shift. We measured distances between landmarks in the deformed initial image and the corresponding landmarks in the target scan. Cortical surface shifts of up to 10 mm and subsurface shifts of up to 6 mm were recovered with an accuracy of 1 mm or less and 3 mm or less respectively.
