This study ...examines the feasibility and effectiveness of applying direct-current therapy in liver metastases of colorectal carcinomas in an animal model.
Liver metastases were implanted in 47 BDIX rats by subcapsular injection of cells from a colorectal strain (DHD/K12). The success rate of implantation and the size of the tumors were determined after 3 weeks by MR imaging (T2-weighted turbo spin-echo images; relaxation time 1,800 ms, echo time 80 ms). The direct-current therapy was applied by one platinum electrode placed in the center of the tumor and four at the periphery of the tumor. Suitable therapy parameters were established in a pilot study by comparing four different methods of direct-current therapy with a control group. The methods varied with respect to the electrode polarity and the applied voltage. In a second series of investigations, tumor growth was monitored by MR imaging 3 and 5 weeks after therapy.
The tumor implantation rate was 92.6% at a tumor cell concentration of 8 x 10(5)/mL. The most effective therapy method was achieved by placing an anode at the center of the tumor and four cathodes at the periphery, with an applied charge of 80 C/cm3. Complete tumor necrosis was observed in 54% of cases. In the follow-up measurements, the mean tumor diameter was 0.65 cm at 3 weeks after therapy and 0.76 cm at 5 weeks after therapy. In comparison with the control group (1.08 and 1.53 cm, respectively), this represented a significant reduction in tumor growth rate.
This study is the first to demonstrate an antitumoral effect of direct-current therapy on liver metastases of colorectal cancer in rats.

To evaluate the feasibility of a novel, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) based ...method known as feature tracking (FT) for the assessment of strain and SR, and to compare the CMR based results to those obtained on standard transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in healthy volunteers and in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy cardiomyopathy (HCM).
Overall, 20 healthy volunteers (ten male, mean age 24 ± 3 years) and 20 consecutive patients with HCM (12 male, mean age 47 ± 19 years) were included. Longitudinal and circumferential strain and SR of the left ventricle were measured on CMR at 1.5 Tesla and TTE and interobserver variability was assessed.
FT measurements were feasible in all subjects. A good agreement between global LV-LS measured on CMR (controls: 20.8 ± 3.0; HCM: 17.6 ± 3.8) and TTE (controls: 19.4 ± 2.1; HCM: 16.6 ± 2.9) was found, while the agreement was worse for circumferential strain and all SR measurements. For the left and right ventricles, interobserver reproducibility was higher for strain measurements compared to SR. Coefficients of variation were lowest for LV-LS (13.2%) by CMR.
FT analysis is a novel CMR based method for the analysis of myocardial strain and SR that is simple and correlates well with the echocardiographic measurements. Since CMR is unaffected by inadequate acoustic windows, FT may represent an attractive alternative to echocardiography in assessing the increasingly important parameters of myocardial deformation.

We report the first wheat stem rust occurrence in the United Kingdom in nearly 60 years, with only 20% of UK wheat varieties resistant to this strain. on barberry in the UK . Our data illustrate that wheat stem rust does occur in the UK and, when climatic conditions are conducive, could severely harm wheat and barley production.
The primary objective of this study is to perform a blinded evaluation of a group of retrospective image registration techniques using as a gold standard a prospective, marker-based registration ...method. To ensure blindedness, all retrospective registrations were performed by participants who had no knowledge of the gold standard results until after their results had been submitted. A secondary goal of the project is to evaluate the importance of correcting geometrical distortion in MR images by comparing the retrospective registration error in the rectified images, i.e., those that have had the distortion correction applied, with that of the same images before rectification.
Image volumes of three modalities (CT, MR, and PET) were obtained from patients undergoing neurosurgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center on whom bone-implanted fiducial markers were mounted. These volumes had all traces of the markers removed and were provided via the Internet to project collaborators outside Vanderbilt, who then performed retrospective registrations on the volumes, calculating transformations from CT to MR and/ or from PET to MR. These investigators communicated their transformations again via the Internet to Vanderbilt, where the accuracy of each registration was evaluated. In this evaluation, the accuracy is measured at multiple volumes of interest (VOIs), i.e., areas in the brain that would commonly be areas of neurological interest. A VOI is defined in the MR image and its centroid c is determined. Then, the prospective registration is used to obtain the corresponding point c' in CT or PET. To this point, the retrospective registration is then applied, producing c" in MR. Statistics are gathered on the target registration error (TRE), which is the distance between the original point c and its corresponding point c".
This article presents statistics on the TRE calculated for each registration technique in this study and provides a brief description of each technique and an estimate of both preparation and execution time needed to perform the registration.
Our results indicate that retrospective techniques have the potential to produce satisfactory results much of the time, but that visual inspection is necessary to guard against large errors.
Atopic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin disease with a strong heritable component. Pathogenetic models consider keratinocyte differentiation defects and immune alterations as scaffolds, and ...recent data indicate a role for autoreactivity in at least a subgroup of patients. FLG (encoding filaggrin) has been identified as a major locus causing skin barrier deficiency. To better define risk variants and identify additional susceptibility loci, we densely genotyped 2,425 German individuals with atopic dermatitis (cases) and 5,449 controls using the Immunochip array followed by replication in 7,196 cases and 15,480 controls from Germany, Ireland, Japan and China. We identified four new susceptibility loci for atopic dermatitis and replicated previous associations. This brings the number of atopic dermatitis risk loci reported in individuals of European ancestry to 11. We estimate that these susceptibility loci together account for 14.4% of the heritability for atopic dermatitis.
During stereotactic brain tumor biopsies, the detection of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) fluorescence and microvascular perfusion using laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) with a handheld fiber optic probe ...allows the identification of tumor tissue while decreasing the risk of intracranial hemorrhage. Neurosurgeons performing this procedure usually view the measurement values on a screen. When their visual focus is directed at the surgical site, they require an assistant to verbally relay the values. An auditory and visual user interface (UI), which displays measurement values accurately and allows fast and intuitive signal recognition, can improve this procedure. This paper experimentally evaluates an auditory and visual UI for providing real-time measurement feedback during stereotactic brain tumor biopsies. In a user study (n = 15), the accuracy of auditory and visual response was determined using function response tests, and user acceptance was evaluated. The auditory signals proved to be intuitive and easy to recognize and remember. The visual display of measurement values was easy to understand and facilitated the user's decision-making process. Moreover, the UI exhibited high user acceptance.
The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility, clinical effect and safety of intravenous thrombolysis with tissue plasminogen activator in patients with acute ischaemic stroke treated in an ...acute stroke unit.
All patients admitted within 3 h after an acute ischaemic stroke were considered for thrombolysis. Twenty-four patients were treated.
Ten patients demonstrated early clinical improvement compatible with a positive effect of thrombolysis. Five patients demonstrated a substantial but slow clinical improvement with an uncertain relationship to thrombolysis. Nine patients did not improve. One patient developed an intracerebral haematoma and 2 developed a haemorrhagic infarction without clinical deterioration. Five patients (21%) died within the first 3 months. At follow-up after 6 months, 10 patients (42%) had achieved independence modified Rankin Scale (mRS) 0-2, 9 (33%) had an unfavourable outcome (mRS 3-5) and 5 patients (21%) had died. None of these 5 patients died due to a treatment complication.
This study in a small patient population suggests that thrombolysis may be administered relatively safely in an acute stroke unit without intensive care facilities. The clinical effect and safety were similar to those which have been found in large randomised studies and clinical series.
