Rembrandt van Rijn’s famous Night Watch is a complex painting and operates on many different levels. This article stresses both the narrative and the moral qualities of the painting, and looks at the ...interplay between art and philosophy, with a focus on the moment represented and how an incident plays out in a broadly ethical sense across the picture. The painting achieves a kind of unity through the representation of the musket blast, which disturbs or affects a good number of the figures in the scene. In addition, the lack of reaction to the shot on the part of the captain and lieutenant offers us a vivid image of military bravery and firm leadership: they remain focused on their duties, and carry out their tasks with stoical calm. The moment of the firing of the gun thus helps to explain both some of the figural action as well as offering an essential moral meaning of Rembrandt’s masterpiece.
Mantegna was born in 1431. He trained in painting at the Padua School where Donatello and Paolo Uccello had previously attended. Even at a young age commissions for Andrea?s work flooded in, for ...example the frescoes of the Ovetari Chapel of Padua. In a short space of time Mantegna found his niche as a modernist due to his highly original ideas; the use of perspective in his works. His marriage with Nicolosia Bellini, the sister of Giovanni, paved the way for his entree into Venice. Mantegna reached an artistic maturity with his altarpiece of Pala San Zeno. He remained in Mantua and became the artist for one of the most prestigious courts in Italy - the Court of Gonzague. Despite his links with Bellini and Leonardo da Vinci, Mantegna refused to adopt their innovative use of colour or leave behind his own technique of engraving. The Bridal Suite is considered his most accomplished work.

Leonardo da Vinci's portrait of Cecilia Gallerani captures the beauty and youth of the mistress of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. While the attribution, identity of the sitter and approximate date ...are now established, some aspects of the meaning of the work are in dispute, and nearly all of the trouble is caused by the lively animal that the young lady holds in her hand: an ermine. Leonardo's painting was made at most within a few years of Ludovico's acceptance into the Order of the Ermine, which linked him to a world of male virtue and noble purity at the highest level in Italian society. It is certainly cogent for us to imagine that the ermine in a painting that he commissioned represented a substitute for himself, shown in loving union with the mistress who would soon no longer be his.
