Over the past decade, a large number of jet substructure observables have been proposed in the literature, and explored at the LHC experiments. Such observables attempt to utilize the internal ...structure of jets in order to distinguish those initiated by quarks, gluons, or by boosted heavy objects, such as top quarks and
W
bosons. This report, originating from and motivated by the BOOST2013 workshop, presents original particle-level studies that aim to improve our understanding of the relationships between jet substructure observables, their complementarity, and their dependence on the underlying jet properties, particularly the jet radius and jet transverse momentum. This is explored in the context of quark/gluon discrimination, boosted
W
boson tagging and boosted top quark tagging.
Lithological maps contain information about the different
lithotypes cropping out in an area. At variance with geological maps,
portraying geological formations, lithological maps may differ as a ...function of their purpose. Here, we describe the preparation of a lithological map of
Italy at the 1:100 000 scale, obtained from classification of a
comprehensive digital database and aimed at describing geomechanical properties. We first obtained the full database, containing about 300 000
georeferenced polygons, from the Italian Geological Survey. We grouped polygons according to a lithological classification by expert analysis of the 5456 original unique descriptions of polygons, following compositional and geomechanical criteria. The procedure resulted in a lithological map with a legend including 19 classes, and it is linked to a database allowing
ready interpretation of the classes in geomechanical properties and is amenable to further improvement. The map is mainly intended for statistical
and physically based modelling of slope stability assessment and geomorphological and geohydrological modelling. Other possible applications include geoenvironmental studies, evaluation of river chemical
composition, and estimation of raw material resources. The dataset is publicly available at https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.935673
(Bucci et al., 2021).

Abstract Arrays are one of the technologies able to detect autoantibodies by measuring simultaneously many thousands of markers from a unique biological sample. The main purpose of a diagnostic test ...is making an early and accurate diagnosis. From a statistical point of view, multiple testing increases the probability of false positive and false negative results. Some correction methods are available to account for this problem for instance family-wise error rate or false discovery rate. From an ethical point of view, the decision to accept or decline a test not requested has to be made autonomously. Some people may seek clarification about tests and implications of their choices. A scarcity of proven measures to reduce mortality has to be considered too. Reasons may also include avoidance of psychological harm or anxiety. Moreover, protection of confidentiality and privacy has to be respected. In conclusion, the fact that testing is optional and that surveillance advice can be offered on the basis of risk alone without a test should be discussed in the consultation. The implication of a positive test result should be discussed to make a decision about the degree to which early treatment of the condition is better than late (or no) treatment.
The successful operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the excellent performance of the ATLAS, CMS, LHCb and ALICE detectors in Run-1 and Run-2 with \(pp\) collisions at center-of-mass ...energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV as well as the giant leap in precision calculations and modeling of fundamental interactions at hadron colliders have allowed an extraordinary breadth of physics studies including precision measurements of a variety physics processes. The LHC results have so far confirmed the validity of the Standard Model of particle physics up to unprecedented energy scales and with great precision in the sectors of strong and electroweak interactions as well as flavour physics, for instance in top quark physics. The upgrade of the LHC to a High Luminosity phase (HL-LHC) at 14 TeV center-of-mass energy with 3 ab\(^{-1}\) of integrated luminosity will probe the Standard Model with even greater precision and will extend the sensitivity to possible anomalies in the Standard Model, thanks to a ten-fold larger data set, upgraded detectors and expected improvements in the theoretical understanding. This document summarises the physics reach of the HL-LHC in the realm of strong and electroweak interactions and top quark physics, and provides a glimpse of the potential of a possible further upgrade of the LHC to a 27 TeV \(pp\) collider, the High-Energy LHC (HE-LHC), assumed to accumulate an integrated luminosity of 15 ab\(^{-1}\).
Secreted as well as surface exposed proteins are assumed to play major roles in bacterial virulence. In this report we describe the construction of an N-terminal protein-capturing system and its use ...for the isolation of
Brucella abortus S2308 genes coding for putative surface exposed or secreted proteins. For this purpose, a cloning vector that generates gene fusions to a ribosome binding site and start codon deficient Chloramphenicol Acetyl Transferase (CAT) reporter gene was constructed and the resulting library introduced into
B. abortus S2308 and
virB mutant strains. Secreted translational fusions were identified by determining CAT activity in culture supernatants. Secretion was confirmed by Western Blot using a polyclonal anti-CAT antibody. A total of 864 clones were screened and 10 genes encoding putative secreted/surface exposed proteins were identified. Seven are
Brucella proteins with an assigned function, whereas three are hypothetical proteins. The number of amino acid residues that promotes CAT secretion varies from 5 to 386 and no conserved motifs were detected. Secretion in a
virB mutant background of some of the isolated fusion proteins was also determined. Interestingly, some hybrid proteins seemed to require a full VirB system for their secretion.
