Soil beetles (Hexapoda, Coleoptera) community, mainly Scarabaeidae, was evaluated in an area with different phytophysiognomies during the rising water period (November/2005) in the Pantanal of ...Poconé, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Thirty transects of 250 m, 1 km distant from each other, in an area of 5x5 km2 (RAPELD) were delimitated. In each transect, which characterized a sampled area, five samples of 1 m² were collected using mini-Winkler, and five pitfall traps distributed at a distance of 50 m between one sample and another and with a distance of 1 m between the two methods. A total of 767 Coleoptera individuals belonging to 27 families and 192 species were obtained. Scarabaeidae and Staphylinidae were the most abundant families. Staphylinidae, Curculionidae and Scarabaeidae were richest in species. Scarabaeidae was represented by 236 individuals distributed in the Scarabaeinae and Aphodiinae subfamilies, 11 genera and 22 species. The multivariate analyses of variance demonstrated that the relationship between the Coleoptera community and the phytophysiognomy was significant, and the relationship between the Scarabaeidae community and the phytophysiognomy was not significant. The murundu fields, cambarazal, landi and introduced pastures were the most representative phytophysiognomies for Coleoptera richness and abundance in this region. A comunidade de besouros de solo (Hexapoda, Coleoptera), principalmente Scarabaeidae, foi avaliada em uma área com diferentes formações vegetacionais (fitofisionomias) durante o período de enchente (novembro/ 2005) no Pantanal de Poconé, Mato Grosso, Brasil. Foram delimitados 30 transectos de 250 m, distantes 1 km entre si, em uma área de 5x5 km² (RAPELD). Em cada transecto, caracterizado como uma área amostral, cinco amostras de 1m² foram coletadas usando mini-Winkler e cinco armadilhas pitfall foram distribuídas a cada 50 m, mantendo-se uma distância de 1 m entre as duas técnicas empregadas. Foram amostrados 767 coleópteros pertencentes a 27 famílias e 192 espécies. Scarabaeidae e Staphylinidae foram as famílias mais abundantes. Staphylinidae, Curculionidae e Scarabaeidae apresentaram maior riqueza de espécies. Scarabaeidae foi representada por 236 indivíduos distribuídos entre Scarabaeinae e Aphodiinae, 11 gêneros e 22 espécies. A análise de variância multivariada evidenciou que a relação entre a comunidade de Coleoptera e as fitofisionomias foi significativa, enquanto entre Scarabaeidae e as fitofisionomias a relação não foi significativa. As áreas de campos de murundus, cambarazal, landi e pastagens introduzidas foram as fitofisionomias mais representativas para a riqueza e abundância de Coleoptera nessa região.
The fourteen described South American species of Heilus (Curculionidae, Molytinae, Molytini, Hylobiina) are reviewed for the first time. Eleven species are redescribed based on specimens (almost ...exclusively from Brazil) examined by us: H. bistigma (Hustache, 1938), H. faldermanni (Boheman, 1836), H. fasciculatus (Boheman, 1843), H. freyreissi (Boheman, 1836), H. inaequalis (Boheman, 1836) = type species of the genus, H. iniquus (Kirsch, 1874), H. myops (Boheman, 1836), H. ochrifer (Boheman, 1843), H. pupillatus (Olivier, 1790), H. rufescens (Boheman, 1836), and H. tuberculosus (Perty, 1832). Diagnoses of one additional Brazilian species, Heilus admixtus (Hustache, 1938), and two additional South American species, H. asperulus (Erichson, 1847), and H. inornatus (Kirsch, 1874), are presented based on the literature and by examination of images of the type material. Integument texture and the variations in the patterns of maculation are the main characteristics used for species identification. Geographic distribution, descriptions of male and female genitalia are provided for eleven redescribed species, together with habitus photographs, and an identification key to the fourteen described South American species.
Este estudo apresenta registro da associação entre três espécies de Cerambycidae e Vochysia divergens Pohl (Vochysiaceae), espécie vegetal típica da região norte do Pantanal de Mato Grosso, que além ...de formar adensamentos monodominantes é considerada uma invasora de campos e pastagens nativas nesta região. Neste estudo, galhos e troncos desta espécie vegetal foram coletados ao longo de um ano (julho/1999 a junho/2000) e monitorados em laboratório para avaliação da densidade e período de emergência dos cerambicídeos. Como resultado, foram amostrados 277 indivíduos, representando três espécies de Cerambycidae, Psapharochrus bivittis (White), Luscosmodicum beaveari Martins e Neoeme bouvieri Gounelle. Além do registro da associação, observou-se que o pico de emergência dos Cerambycidae coincide com o início do período de enchente e cheia na região norte do Pantanal, evidenciando o sincronismo entre o desenvolvimento biológico destas espécies e o ciclo hidrológico desta região. This study aims the registration of the association between Cerambycidae and Vochysia divergens Pohl (Vochysiaceae), typical plant species of the northern region of the Pantanal of Mato Grosso that besides forming monodominant stands and is considered a weed of fields and pastures in this region. In this study, branches and trunks of this specie were collected over one year (July/1999 - June/2000) and lab monitored for density and emergency time evaluation of Cerambycidae. As results 277 individuals were sampled, representing three species of Cerambycidae, Psapharochrus bivittis (White), Luscosmodicum beaveari Martins and Neoeme bouvieri Gounelle. In addition to registration of the association, it was noted that the emergence peak of Cerambycidae coincides with the beginning of flood and high water period in northern Pantanal, showing the synchronization between the biological development of this species and the hydrological cycle in this region
Knowledge of the reproductive biology of Bare-faced Curassows (BFC) from their natural habitats is very limited. Our study covers a two-and-a-half year breeding phenology on BFC in the northern ...Pantanal (Mato Grosso State, Brazil) with the main objective of collecting information on reproduction biology to contribute to future conservation management strategies of this cracid, which received a recent status of "High Conservation Priority". The study was conducted at the SESC Pantanal, Baía das Pedras, Mato Grosso, Brazil (16°29′55″S, 56°24′46″W), a private protected area of approximately 4,200 ha. Between July 2015 and December 2017, 37 sampling locations were monitored with camera traps placed in a regular grid with a spacing of 1 km. Offspring were detected at least once at 8 locations, namely, in March, April, and May 2016 and in June, July, October, and November 2017, always together with parent(s). Territorial overlap between different family groups was detected. The camera trap dataset was supplemented by data from Citizen Science Projects (i.e., eBird) and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). Based on feather developmental stages and body size, offspring were classified into different age classes. Age determination indicates that breeding occurs year-round in the northern Pantanal region, supported by eBird and GBIF data. The use of a grid-based design for future camera-trapping studies of BFCs is strongly recommended. Our study is of biological relevance for conservation management projects since data were collected in an area with low anthropogenic disturbance and intact ecosystem services.
The large floral chambers of the Neotropical Annonaceae are pollinated by large beetles of the tribe Cyclocephalini Laporte (Melolonthidae). Previous research indicates that, depending on the ...geographic area, the assemblage of Cyclocephalini pollinators may differ. In this study, pollinators of Annona crassiflora Mart. were surveyed in the Cerrado of Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso, Brazil, for the first time. The analysis of 74 flowers from 24 A. crassiflora individuals revealed that the principal pollinator was Cyclocephala octopunctata Burmeister. The secondary pollinator, Cyclocephala celata Dechambre, and C. octopunctata exhibited behaviour that may promote cross pollination, visiting both female- and male-phase flowers, touching stigmas and anthers and becoming coated in pollen during anthesis. This is the first record of C. celata, a species commonly found pollinating Araceae in the Atlantic Forest, as a pollinator of an Annonaceae species in the Cerrado. Additionally, an interim phase between the female and male phases of A. crassiflora is documented here for the first time.

Terrestrial arthropods from tree canopies in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso, Brazil. This study represents a contribution to the knowledge of the diversity of arthropods associated to the canopy of ...Vochysia divergens Pohl (Vochysiaceae). Three trees individuals were sampled during two seasonal periods in this region: a) by spraying one tree canopy during high water (February); b) by fogging two tree canopies during low water (September/October). The 15,744 arthropods (183.2±38.9 individuals/m²) obtained from all three trees (86 m²) represented 20 taxonomic orders, 87.1% were Insecta, and 12.9% Arachnida. The dominant groups were Hymenoptera (48.5%; 88.9 individuals/m²), mostly Formicidae (44.5%; 81.4 individuals/m²), followed by Coleoptera (14.0%; 25.5 individuals/m²) and Araneae (10.2%; 19.5 individuals/m²), together representing 62.5% of the total catch. Fourteen (70%) of all orders occurred on three trees. Dermaptera, Isoptera, Neuroptera, Odonata, Plecoptera and Trichoptera were collected from only one tree. Of the total, 2,197 adult Coleoptera collected (25.5±11.3 individuals/m²), 99% were assigned to 32 families and 256 morphospecies. Nitidulidae (17.9% of the total catch; 4.6 individuals/m²), Anobiidae (16.7%; 4.3 individuals/m²), Curculionidae (13.2%; 3.4 individuals/m²) and Meloidae (11.4%; 2.9 individuals/m²) dominated. The communitiy of adult Coleoptera on V. divergens indicated a dominance of herbivores (37.8% of the total catch, 127 spp.) and predators (35.2%, 82 spp.), followed by saprophages (16.2%, 32 spp.) and fungivores (10.8%, 15 spp.). The influence of the flood pulse on the community of arboreal arthropods in V. divergens is indicated by the seasonal variation in evaluated groups, causing changes in their structure and composition.
Artrópodes terrestres associados a copas de árvores no Pantanal de Mato Grosso, Brasil. Este estudo representa uma contribuição ao conhecimento da diversidade de artrópodes associados à copa de Vochysia divergens Pohl (Vochysiaceae). Três indivíduos foram amostrados durante dois períodos sazonais, um durante a cheia (árvore A: fevereiro) utilizando-se o método de pulverização com inseticida e dois durante a seca (árvore B: setembro, C: outubro), empregando-se a termonebulização. Um total de 15744 artrópodes (183,2±38,9 individuos/m²) foram obtidos em 86m² de área representando 20 ordens taxonômicas, 87,1% Insecta e 12,9% Arachnida. O grupo dominante foi Hymenoptera (48,5%; 88,9 individuos/m²), a maioria Formicidae (44,5%; 81,4 individuos/m²), seguido por Coleoptera (14,0%; 25,5 individuos/m²) e Araneae (10,2%; 19,5 individuos/m²), que representaram 62,5% do total coletado. Com relação a freqüência, 14 de todas as ordens (70%) ocorreram nas tres árvores. Dermaptera, Isoptera, Neuroptera, Odonata, Plecoptera e Trichoptera foram coletadas em uma única árvore. As palmeiras correspondem a um importante elemento nos ecossistemas tropicais, servindo como fonte alimentar e habitat para uma grande variedade de organismos invertebrados e vertebrados. ...Considerando o papel destas plantas como hospedeiras de diferentes espécies este estudo objetivou avaliar de maneira descritiva a composição, distribuição em guildas tróficas e a biomassa da comunidade de Coleoptera associada às copas de Attalea phalerata Mart. (Arecaceae) no Pantanal de Poconé, Mato Grosso. Ao todo foram amostrados seis indivíduos desta palmeira em fevereiro 2001, empregando-se a metodologia de termonebulização de copas. Obtiveram-se 7.670 indivíduos (77,5 ind./m²), sendo 5.044 adultos (65,7%; 50,9 ind./m²) e 2.626 larvas (34,3%; 26,5 ind./m²). Os adultos foram distribuídos em 43 famílias e 467 morfoespécies. As famílias mais representativas foram Endomychidae, Nitidulidae, Tenebrionidae, Staphylinidae e Curculionidae, correspondendo a 66,9% do total coletado. Dentre as guildas tróficas, saprófagos, fungívoros e herbívoros predominaram sobre predadores. A maior riqueza de espécies foi observada em Staphylinidae, Curculionidae, Tenebrionidae e Chrysomelidae. A maior biomassa foi registrada para Scarabaeidae e Tenebrionidae, seguidos por Nitidulidae e Curculionidae. Esses resultados indicam que a copa de A. phalerata é habitat para uma grande diversidade de Coleoptera, bem como local de reprodução, fato evidenciado pelo elevado número de larvas amostradas neste estudo.
Coleoptera (Arthropoda, Insecta) Associated with the Canopies of Attalea phalerata Mart. (Arecaceae) in the Pantanal of Poconé, Mato Grosso, Brazil
Abstract. The palm trees correspond to an important element in tropical ecosystems, serving as food source and habitat for a wide variety of invertebrates and vertebrates. Considering the role of these plants as hosts of different species, this study evaluated descriptively the composition, trophic guilds and biomass of the community of Coleoptera associated with canopies Attalea phalerata Mart. (Arecaceae) in the Pantanal of Poconé, Mato Grosso. Six palm trees were sampled during the high water season of the Pantanal of Mato Grosso (February 2001), by canopy fogging. A total of 7,670 specimens were collected (77.5 ind./m²), 5,044 adults (65.7%; 50.9 ind./m²) and 2,626 larvae (34.3%; 26.5 ind./m²). Adults (65.7%) represented 43 families and 467 morphospecies. The dominant families were Endomychidae, Nitidulidae, Tenebrionidae, Staphylinidae and Curculionidae, representing 66.9% of the total catch. Saprophages, fungivores and herbivores prevailed over predators. Highest richness of species was found for Staphylinidae, Curculionidae, Tenebrionidae and Chrysomelidae. Highest biomass was found in Scarabaeidae and Tenebrionidae followed by Nitidulidae and Curculionidae. These results indicate that the canopy of A. phalerata is habitat for a wide variety of Coleoptera, as well a reproduction site, as evidenced by the high number of larvae sampled in this study.
The study of coleopteran assemblages associated with the canopies of tropical forests can help to expand the knowledge about species diversity and the ecological patterns related to the distribution ...of this diversity in tropical environments, including wetlands such as the Brazilian Pantanal. In this scenario, the present study examined the effect of temporal variation on the abundance, richness and distribution of the Coleoptera assemblage associated with canopies of Callisthene fasciculata (Spr.) Mart. (Vochysiaceae) throughout the dry and high-water seasonal periods in the Northern Pantanal of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Twelve specimens of C. fasciculata were sampled between 2010 and 2011, six per seasonal period, by thermal fogging with insecticide. A total of 1,663 coleopterans were collected, consisting of 1,572 adults and 91 larvae. The adults are distributed into 38 families and 251 species or morphospecies. Chrysomelidae, Curculionidae, Nitidulidae and Tenebrionidae predominated in terms of abundance and richness. Family distribution, abundance, species richness and trophic guilds varied between the dry and high-water periods, demonstrating a relationship with the phenological conditions of C. fasciculata in addition to seasonality effect. In conclusion, the seasonality imposed by the hydrological regime and its influence on the phenology of C. fasciculata affect the structure of the coleopteran assemblage associated with the canopy of this monodominant vegetation formation in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso.
Resumo: O estudo de assembleias de coleópteros associadas às copas de florestas tropicias contribui para a expansão do conhecimento sobre a diversidade de espécies e os padrões ecológicos relacionados à distribuição dessa diversidade em ambientes tropicais, incluindo áreas úmidas como o Pantanal brasileiro. Nesse cenário, o presente estudo avaliou o efeito da variação temporal sobre a abundância, riqueza e distribuição da assembleia de Coleoptera associada às copas de Callisthene fasciculata (Spr.) Mart. (Vochysiaceae) ao longo dos períodos de seca e cheia na região norte do Pantanal de Mato Grosso, Brasil. Doze exemplares de C. fasciculata foram amostrados entre 2010 e 2011, seis por período sazonal, utilizando-se termonebulização com inseticida. Um total de 1.663 coleópteros foram coletados, consistindo em 1.572 adultos e 91 larvas. Os adultos se distribuem em 38 famílias e 251 espécies e morfoespécies. Chrysomelidae, Curculionidae, Nitidulidae e Tenebrionidae predominaram em termos de abundância e riqueza. A distribuição das famílias, abundância, riqueza de espécies e agrupamentos em guildas tróficas variaram entre os períodos de seca e cheia, evidenciando uma estreita relação com as condições fenológicas de C. fasciculata ocasionadas pelo efeito sazonal dessa região. Conclui-se que a sazonalidade imposta pelo regime hidrológico do Pantanal e sua influência sobre a fenologia de C. fasciculata afetam a estrutura da assembleia de coleópteros associados às copas nessa formação monodominante no Pantanal de Mato Grosso.
Abstract A pictorial key for the identification of aquatic and semiaquatic adults of Curculionidae associated with aquatic macrophytes from the Pantanal of Mato Grosso and the Amazon is presented for ...the first time based on the study of 13,252 specimens belonging to the two families of Curculionoidea (Brentidae and Curculionidae), six subfamilies, eight tribes, 22 genera and 24 species, most belonging to Tanysphyrini (Curculionidae, Brachycerinae). This key can be extrapolated to the Neotropical Region fauna due to the wide distribution of the included species, which is discussed in relation to taxonomic, biogeographical, and ecological studies.
Resumo Apresenta-se pela primeira vez uma chave pictórica para identificação dos adultos aquáticos e semiaquáticos de Curculionidae associados às macrófitas aquáticas do Pantanal mato-grossense e da Amazônia, baseada no estudo de 13.252 exemplares pertencentes a duas famílias de Curculionoidea (Brentidae e Curculionidae), seis subfamílias, oito tribos, 22 gêneros e 24 espécies, a maioria pertencente a Tanysphyrini (Curculionidae, Brachycerinae). A chave proposta pode ser extrapolada para a fauna da Região Neotropical devido a ampla distribuição das espécies incluídas, as quais são discutidas em relação aos estudos taxonômicos, biogeográficos e ecológicos.
