In this essay I argue the thesis that, although the field of SoTL has changed and grown somewhat over time, many issues, concerns, and practices remain stagnant and unresolved. I reflect on this ...thesis based on my SoTL career experiences, observations, and writings. Finally, I urge IJSOTL readers to question and address this thesis, and any implications.
In this essay, I remind readers of the importance of using SoTL work in a range of ways and settings at different levels to increase our impact on student learning as well as institutional and ...disciplinary cultures. I briefly discuss and illustrate six strategies already in use on which we can build.
The most important function of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is to enhance student learning. There are numerous strategies to increase application and positive impact of our SoTL ...work on student learning. In this essay, I remind readers of two, sometimes neglected, strategies: 1. incorporating methods and measures in our SoTL studies to find and understand the processes and conditions at work and 2. doing all we can to share the results of relevant SoTL work directly with students so they can make use of the implications of SoTL findings. Our neglect of these two strategies in much SoTL work limits our impact. In this essay, I offer multiple ways and examples to implement these strategies. We need to remember to get at the „why‟ and the „how‟ in our SoTL projects as well as to share our results directly with our students and help them apply what we have learned.
Despite decades of sociology scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) research, integration of SoTL in sociology remains insufficient. First, some reasons for the insufficient integration of SoTL ...in the discipline are noted, and the foci of publications on the history and status of the SoTL in sociology are briefly summarized. Literature related to three questions about the integration of SoTL in sociology is then presented: (1) To what degree are theories, methods, and research findings of the discipline used in sociology SoTL? (2) Is there strong disciplinary support and recognition for SoTL and involvement in SoTL in departments and professional organizations? (3) Do sociologists use SoTL findings in the practice of teaching and learning in the discipline? Finally, some existing and new strategies to increase integration are described.

Although touch can and has been used in unhealthy ways with clients, one must not overlook the value of touch in creating positive bonds or attachments and how these attachments affect the kind and ...quality of relationships people experience throughout their lives. The integration of touch within the psychotherapeutic context is obviously fraught with multiple concerns. In spite of inherent complexities, a reconsideration of some clinicians' practice behaviors of "do not touch" is warranted. The social work profession could perhaps incorporate the biomedical ethical framework as a starting point for consideration of the use of touch within therapeutic situations. Under this framework professionals are required to keep foremost in their minds the principles of autonomy (self-determination), beneficence (promoting well-being), and nonmaleficence (doing no harm), with an emphasis on virtue ethics (character of the moral agent) (Wardell & Engebretson, 2001). This article offers suggestions regarding touch for practitioners to incorporate in their work regarding touch. Adapted from the source document.
Learning takes place both in and outside the classroom. While there are a studies that focus on the professional, developmental, and learning outcomes of participation in student organizations, there ...has been insufficient research on these outcomes in sport clubs specifically and no research in an equestrian setting. In this paper, we report on the results of an on-line, primarily qualitative, questionnaire study conducted with members of a collegiate student organization, the Equestrians, at a large Midwestern U.S. university, as well as schools with similar organizations within the region and across the nation. Students were asked their reasons for joining the club and perceptions of what they learned, beyond equestrian skills, from participation in the organization. The respondents reported equestrian and interpersonal reasons for joining, and that participation increased their development in a number of academic and professional areas, especially in terms of 1. work ethic/time management/balance, 2. collaboration/communication/teamwork, and 3. leadership.
This personal reflection describes the author's 25-year relationship with the scholarship of teaching and learning. Her thoughts wander to influences on her career in SoTL, the impact SoTL has had on ...her professional life, the dilemmas in the field that continue to be pondered, ways to advocate for and support SoTL work, and her hopes for the future of SoTL.
This study examined whether a new student organization, Active Minds, aimed at increasing awareness of "mental illness" and reducing stigma had an impact on students' stigma and willingness to seek ...psychological help. Three classes were recruited to become involved in the organization. In a pretest/posttest design, stigma and willingness to seek psychological help were compared between students who became involved in Active Minds and students who did not. Students involved in the organization showed a significant reduction in stigma if they had a history of mental illness in their families. However, willingness to seek psychological help was unaffected. The program's partial success is viewed in terms of empowerment and recovery. The peer support provided through Active Minds may help change people's negative attitudes about mental illness and encourage students to help one another in coping with their diagnoses.
The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) began primarily as a discipline-based movement, committed to exploring the signature pedagogical and learning styles of each discipline within higher ...education, with little exchange across disciplines. As the field has developed, new questions have arisen concerning cross-disciplinary comparison and learning in multidisciplinary settings This volume by a stellar group of experts provides a state-of-the-field review of recent SoTL scholarship within a range of disciplines and offers a stimulating discussion of critical issues related to interdisciplinarity in teaching, learning, and SoTL research.
