Politeness is crucial to communicating among individuals or between groups in a speech community. This research mainly explores the politeness of welcoming guests in the Manggaraian speech community. ...Video recording and interviews were the techniques used to collect the data. Eight videos were recorded and transcribed in text. The data were interpreted in socio-pragmatics theory. The findings reveal that the Manggaraian speech community tend to apply positive and off-the-record politeness strategies. A positive politeness strategy was mainly employed to build a close relationship and friendliness and to show respect to a guest. The use of a positive politeness strategy was marked in honorifics such as ite, mori, ema, and downtoner yo. An off-the-record politeness strategy was utilised to designate generosity, modesty, and approbation to a guest. This politeness strategy was indicated in metaphorical expressions. The social factors that determine the use of those politeness strategies are related to the context of the event, age, relation, and guest status. In this study, the Manggaraian speech community employ politeness in the ritual of welcoming a guest to achieve three benefits: manifesting respect, maintaining a good relationship, and showing a positive attitude toward the guest.
Natural charm, cultural attractions and agro-tourism are the main objects of Meler tourism village. These tourism objects not only provide a wonderful natural persona (rice field spider web terrace) ...but also a variety of traditional dances that contain historical, educational and humanistic values that are universally applicable. These advantages can be utilized to boost the economy of rural communities. However, tourism village administrators must be digitally literate in order to maximize the economic impact of these tourism assets. The outcome target of this community service is to improve the digital literacy skills of the seven Meler tourist village administrators. This community service was carried out at the Meler village office for two months (May – June 2021), twice a week. A number of methods have been applied to meet the intended outcome targets, namely lecturing, questions and answers, discussions, demonstrations and presentations. The results indicate that the training participants have understood and applied the concept of digital literacy in managing tourism villages.
The research aimed to analyze the metaphor constructions and pedagogic values in the tiba meka dance. Students’ character building through metaphor construction in traditional dance had not been ...widely investigated; meanwhile, the metaphors used in this dance contain great values for encouraging students’ positive attitudes. Metaphor construction had a fundamental role for the students to have creative thought and deepen their understanding of its nature and role as a real communication language. The proper metaphor’s construction encouraged a student to be a catalyst in cross-cultural communication and appreciated the values contained in the metaphor delivered. The research was carried out between February and December 2019 and involved 30 respondents. The instruments used in collecting data were a set of stationery, questionnaire, interview, documentation, field notes, and recordings. These data were analyzed qualitatively through the phenomenological method. The findings show that the tiba meka dance is inseparable from the use of metaphors, namely bird, vegetation, body, sun, and water metaphors that have great pedagogic values, such as honesty, responsibility, and disciplin that contribute to the character building for students. The ideologies that underline tiba meka dance are morals, identity, and economy.
This study aims to investigate and disclose the students' profiles and the obstacles that stand in the way of obtaining digital media literacy in English instruction for high school students in ...Ruteng City, Indonesia. This study surveyed 595 students from six Senior High Schools in Ruteng City, Indonesia. The questionnaire served as the primary instrument for data collection, followed by quantitative and qualitative analysis of the findings. The study results indicated that the level of media literacy competence among students falls into the low category (2,84). This category was indicated by eight statements of media digital literacy competence. Moreover, five factors challenged the respondents' digital media literacy achievement, namely lack of students' enthusiasm and initiative in regards to digital media literacy (61,59%), lack of cost for purchasing internet data packages (71,20%), insufficient time allocated for the use of specific English learning software (59,48%), unstable internet network connectivity (58,27%), and lack of available ICT infrastructure in schools (58,33%). Various issues hinder the level at which students might acquire digital media literacy skills, and stakeholders are encouraged to address or overcome these obstacles.
This study examines the language maintenance model for a local language in another language community, specifically to examine Sumbawanese language maintenance in the Balinese community. This study ...encompasses 1) the Sumbawanese speakers’ competence of Sumbawanese language; 2) Sumbawanese language use patterns in the Balinese community; 3) language attitudes of Sumbawanese speakers toward their language. This study focuses on Denpasar's several locations, where most of the language interaction occurred, and data were collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires. Those data were analyzed by using a software program, namely an excel chart data series. The research subjects were both older and younger Sumbawanese speakers. An analysis of language attitudes also considered the roles of language choice and language change in maintaining cultural diversity and ethnic identity, which will psychologically provide a feeling of assurance in personal linguistic competence. In Sumbawanese speakers, the context of communicating in Balinese society will be thoroughly considered. The findings show that speakers of Sumbawa language have good competence towards Sumbawa language, rarely use Sumbawa language, and have more positive than negative attitudes towards their language. Speakers are stimulated to maintain the frequency of language use and their positive language attitudes to be competent intercultural speakers. TRAINING FOR CONSTRUCTING OF THE MINISTER NADIEM’S VERSION OF ONE-SHEET LESSON PLAN FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHERS. Learning planning is a system that refers to the objective to be achieved because ...it is the basis of work in carrying out all activities in learning. A system is a unit consisting of a number of components that are interconnected and interact with one another in an effort to achieve the goal. At present, elementary school teachers have difficulty in conducting the Minister Nadiem’s new policy as stipulated in a circular letter No. 14 of 2019 concerning the simplification of the administration of learning, especially related to the implementation of lesson plan of the 2013 curriculum becomes one-sheet lesson plan model. Simplifying the components of the 2013 curriculum learning lesson plan to adapt the model developed by Glaser which is the basic model in constructing lesson plan with the scope of its components, namely objective, learning procedure, and assessment. Thus, this training focuses on mentoring for teachers in developing a one-sheet lesson plan in accordance with the needs of SDN Ules, South Lembor sub-district, West Manggarai regency which is oriented toward increasing teacher creativity and innovation in learning. This training includes four stages, namely (1) needs analysis of the participants (teachers) of the training activities; (2) workshop on constructing of one-sheet lesson plan of the Minister Nadiem’s version; (3) construction and presentation of activities result, and (4) evaluation. The outcome of this activity is the availability of lesson plan model which is ready to be used by teachers in the learning process of academic year of 2020/2021, equipped with portfolio and project assessment guidelines according to subject to achieve meaningful learning goals.
Speaking as the most demanding skill to be mastered in the ESL/EFL teaching context. This is caused by the prime priority of students who want to study English in order to be able to use English for ...communicative purposes. Knowledge of language functions has a vital role in supporting a speaker to be more involved in the real interaction. The aim of this study is to analyze the use of language functions in the speaking for academic purposes course. This study conducted at the English department students which altogether 33 persons in STKIP Santu Paulus Ruteng, Indonesia. Then data were collected through observation, field note and natural recorded when the respondents were doing the English speaking exercises at the speaking for academic purposes course. Data collection were done during eight meetings and only language functions utterances of those respondents were analyzed. The utterances recorded are expected to be representative of the whole the language functions. Utterances produced by respondents were recorded precisely by the researchers. The result showed that there are five types of language functions found, namely interactive function, informative function, manipulative function, motivative function and directive functions. Those functions are reciprocal. Speaking practitioners are suggested to provide the knowledge of language functions in the speaking learning process.
Culture is about human existence and the way of life, while language is about the communication system between people in a particular society or community. Language use usually reflects the habits of ...society, the way of thinking, the work of the brain, the history of society, and the internal relationship in society. The use of personal pronoun inclusive we it in Manggarai language helps speakers find out the relationship between linguistic aspects and cultural values. Based on these arguments, this study aims to analyze the relationship between the two aspects that are being addressed. The data were collected through observations and interviews of the ten traditional spokespersons, then analyzed qualitatively. The finding indicates that the use of it in all of its forms reflects the etiquette of people in Manggarai, Indonesia. Referring to the data stated, this study, therefore, concludes that the first personal pronoun plural inclusive we it , in Manggarai language and culture demonstrates the speaker's politeness and humility in front of the hearer or listener; the speaker truly respects the interlocutor; to convey high regard for the interlocutor in a high position; to prove tribute, respect, and admiration; to show intimacy, closeness, and fraternity in the social relationship; and to show a great homage to Supreme Being.
