In this work, an alternative method of coupling light into microstructured polymer fibers is presented. The solution consists in using a fiber taper fabricated with a CO2 laser. The connection is ...formed by inserting a tapered silica tip into the holes of a microstructured polymer fiber. This alternative method is duly characterized and the feasibility of such fiber connection to enable the polymer fiber as a displacement sensor is also demonstrated.
We demonstrate a partially degenerated intermodal four-wave mixing (FWM) process realized in a few-mode nonlinear optical fiber, leading to the effective generation of visible red and blue light from ...532 nm sub-nanosecond pulses. We present a self-seeded FWM configuration with a signal beam obtained in the additional section of the same type of fiber that ensures perfect matching between the seed and the Stokes beams. Over 40% of the wavelength conversion efficiency in the FWM process was obtained using a fiber length shorter than 1 m.
Our study investigated the partially degenerate intermodal four-wave mixing (IM-FWM) process in nonlinear multimode optical fibers with strain-induced birefringence. The difference in the refractive ...index along the two orthogonal directions was due to the photoelastic effect that occurred when the fiber under test (FUT) was subjected to uniformly applied diameter stress caused by winding on a cylinder of a given diameter. Our work analyzed how the nonlinear frequency conversion and the output modal field profiles depended on the degree of birefringence in FUT. The experimental results significantly affected the order of the excited moduli in fiber sections characterized by different amounts of birefringence. We also checked the efficiency of the FWM process for different polarizations of the pump beam to determine those for which the FWM process was most effective for the 532 nm sub-nanosecond pulses. More than 30% conversion efficiency was obtained for the FUTs with a length of tens of centimeters.
We experimentally investigate the spectro-temporal characteristics of coherent supercontinuum (SC) pulses generated in several implementations of silica and soft-glass all-normal dispersion (ANDi) ...photonic crystal fibers optimized for pumping with Erbium (Er):fiber femtosecond laser technology. We characterize the resulting SC using time-domain ptychography, which is especially suitable for the measurement of complex, spectrally broadband ultrashort pulses. The measurements of the ANDi SC pulses reveal intricate pulse shapes, considerable temporal fine structure, and oscillations on time scales of < 25 femtoseconds, which differ from the smoothness and simplicity of temporal profiles obtained in numerical simulations and observed in previous experiments. We link the measured complex features to temporal sub-structures of the pump pulse, such as pre- and post-pulses and low-level pedestals, which are common in high pulse energy ultrafast Er:fiber systems. We also observe spectro-temporal structures consistent with incoherent noise amplification in weakly birefringent fiber samples. Our results highlight the importance of the pump source and polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers for high-quality SC generation and have practical relevance for many ultrafast photonics applications employing ANDi fiber-based SC sources.
We present a direct comparison between two types of femtosecond 2 µm sources used for seeding of an ultrafast thulium-doped fiber amplifier based on all-normal dispersion supercontinuum and soliton ...self-frequency shift. Both nonlinear effects were generated in microstructured silica fibers, pumped with low-power femtosecond pulses at 1.56 µm originating from an erbium-doped fiber laser. We performed a full characterization of both nonlinear processes, including their shot-to-shot stability, phase coherence, and relative intensity noise. The results revealed that the solitons show comparable performance to supercontinuum in terms of relative intensity noise and shot-to-shot stability, despite the anomalous dispersion regime. Both sources can be successfully used as seeds for Tm-doped fiber amplifiers as an alternative to Tm-doped oscillators. The results show that the sign of chromatic dispersion of the fiber is not crucial for obtaining a stable, high-quality, and low-noise spectral conversion process when pumped with sub-50 fs laser pulses.
Fiber Bragg grating inscription with infrared femtosecond pulsed lasers in photonic crystal fiber is far from being trivial due to the presence of air holes in the cladding region and the non-linear ...nature of the absorption process inducing the required refractive index changes. We have studied this problem numerically and experimentally for a phase mask-based writing setup equipped with short focal length cylindrical lenses, which are often used for through-coating and high temperature stable grating writing. We have shown that for a cylindrical lens with a focal length f of 10 mm, the hexagonal lattice PCF needs to be translated away from the beam waist position by around 15 µm to efficiently deliver the energy to the core region. We have also investigated the importance of the PCF's angular orientation and we have shown that for some optimal positions the same behavior is observed for cylindrical lenses with different focal lengths. Finally, we have succeeded in writing a 4 dB strong grating in a photonic crystal fiber with a 1030 nm femtosecond pulsed laser in around 4 seconds, using an acylindrical lens with f = 10 mm.
The strain sensitivity of a two-mode birefringent side-hole fiber is measured in the spectral domain. In a simple experimental setup comprising a broadband source, a polarizer, a two-mode ...birefringent side-hole fiber under varied elongations, an analyzer and a compact spectrometer, the spectral interferograms are resolved. These are characterized by the equalization wavelength at which spectral interference fringes have the highest visibility (the largest period) due to the zero group optical path difference between the fundamental, the LP01 mode and the higher-order, the LP11 mode. The spectral interferograms with the equalization wavelength are processed to retrieve the phase as a function of the wavelength. From the retrieved phase functions corresponding to different elongations of a two-mode birefringent side-hole fiber under test, the spectral strain sensitivity is obtained. Using this approach, the intermodal spectral strain sensitivity was measured for both x and y polarizations. Moreover, the spectral polarimetric sensitivity to strain was measured for the fundamental mode when a birefringent delay line was used in tandem with the fiber. Its spectral dependence was also compared with that obtained from a shift of the spectral interferograms not including the equalization wavelength, and good agreement was confirmed.
In this work, a compact all-fiber bend sensor based on a dual-core microstructured optical fiber has been manufactured and characterized. The sensor relies on the unbalanced Michelson interferometric ...technique realized by attaching a piece of silica fiber to one of the fiber cores acting as the unbalancing element. Three probes with different lengths of the unbalancing element have been experimentally tested for sensitivity tailoring analysis. Additionally, a theoretical model has been developed for comparison and verification of the results. Good linear behavior of the spectral shift with bend has been measured and it has been proven that the sensitivity of the sensor depends on the length of the unbalancing element and the orientation of the cores. Higher sensitivities are achieved for shorter lengths of the unbalancing element and orientation of the core axis parallel to the bend direction. The highest sensitivity reported is 9.97 pm/µm for the case of 34 µm of unbalancing element and orientation of 0 degrees.
Ground temperature measurements are crucial for a better understanding of changes in the natural environment, especially in the Arctic. Previous measurement systems provided accurate measurements; ...however, their most significant disadvantage was the relatively low spatial resolution, including in the vertical profile. The aim of this work was to develop and initially validate a new, original temperature measurement system based on the photonic sensing technique of optical frequency‐domain reflectometry (OFDR). The system consists of a fibre‐optic sensor, an interrogator, and an automatic data acquisition system. Such fibre‐optic sensors allow a significant increase in spatial resolution. Data on precise temperature distribution in the ground profile will allow for a detailed determination of the changes in the thickness of the permafrost active layer (PAL) and, as a consequence, a better description of the current state of the permafrost and the layers above it in relation to their progressive degradation. In the longer term, it will make a better prediction of the pace of possible changes in the polar environment and will open up previously unavailable opportunities in the field of climate change monitoring and forecasting.
