We designed, manufactured and characterized two birefringent microstructured fibers that feature a 5-fold increase in polarimetric sensitivity to hydrostatic pressure compared to the earlier reported ...values for microstructured fibers. We demonstrate a good agreement between the finite element simulations and the experimental values for the polarimetric sensitivity to pressure and to temperature. The sensitivity to hydrostatic pressure has a negative sign and exceeds -43 rad/MPa x m at 1.55 microm for both fibers. In combination with the very low sensitivity to temperature, this makes our fibers the candidates of choice for the development of microstructured fiber based hydrostatic pressure measurement systems.

Using these methods, in addition to quantitative information (mass change, process heat), the qualitative information regarding the chemical composition of the gas products is obtained.

The synthesis and characterization of luminescent hybrid materials containing three different europium(III) complexes incorporated into the polymeric host during the copolymerization process with the commercially available monomer: ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) is reported. A new method of synthesis of organic–inorganic materials in the form of microspheres was proposed. The chemical structure of these materials was confirmed by the ATR–FTIR analysis. Thermal stability and pathways of thermal decomposition of the luminescent europium(III) complexes as well as obtained materials were investigated by means of the thermal analysis methods (TG–DTG–DSC) in air and inert atmosphere. Volatile products of thermal decomposition of polymeric matrix and hybrid materials were analyzed by the TG–QMS method. Luminescence properties of the complexes as dopants in the obtained materials were investigated in detail.
In this work we report the results of our investigations on luminescence properties in the visible spectral range of composite materials based on polymer matrices doped with nano-sized crystals ...activated by Pr3+ ions. In particular, we investigated the visible emission of YF3, LaAlO3, Al2O3 and Y2O3 nanopowders activated with Pr3+ ions, as well as PMMA-based composites doped with particles of the best luminescent properties. The basic structural characterization of the developed samples was performed, followed by versatile optical characterization, focused on measurements and analysis of excitation and luminescence spectra and fluorescence dynamics profiles. The comparison of spectroscopic features of developed materials enabled discussion of the influence of crystalline and polymer environment on luminescent properties of resulting materials as well as consideration of potential applicability of developed materials in white light emitters.

We report on an extrinsic surface plasmon-enhanced refractometer based on cladding mode resonance excitation in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) equipped with a straight fiber Bragg grating (FBG). ...First, we show that the lattice pitch and the air hole diameter of the PCF microstructure define the spectral location of the excited cladding mode resonances. Second, we demonstrate that if the PCF parameters are properly selected, those resonances are sensitive to increases in steps of 1 × 10 −4 refractive index units (RIU) of the refractive index value close to that of water. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the sensitivity of PCF cladding mode resonances to refractive index changes in water-based solutions is reported. We achieved experimental values of 40.3 nm/RIU in terms of wavelength sensitivity and −801 dB/RIU in terms of amplitude sensitivity. The performance of our sensor is therefore comparable to that of tilted FBGs in step-index fibers used for water refractometry, which indicates the potential of our PCF sensor for biosensing. In addition, the sensor fabrication does not require any post-processing such as etching or polishing, which allows preserving the integrity of the fiber probe. Finally, the narrow spectrum within which the PCF operates, allows envisaging multi-target detection with a single fiber probe by using cascaded wavelength-multiplexed gratings.
We demonstrate a fiber-based optical vortex beam source operating in broadband or tunable mode in the spectral range of 1100–1400 nm. The vector vortices of the total angular momenta equal to +2, 0, ...and −2 are obtained by converting the respective linearly polarized (LP 11 ) modes of the two-mode birefringent PANDA fiber with stress-applying elements by gradually twisting its output section. At the input end, the PANDA fiber is powered by broadband supercontinuum or tunable Raman solitons generated in the LP 11 polarization modes of a birefringent microstructured fiber with a specially designed dispersion profile and coupled to the respective LP 11 modes of the PANDA fiber. Two pulse lasers operating in different regimes (1 ns/1064 nm and 190 fs/1037 nm) were used as the pump to generate supercontinuum or tunable solitons directly in the LP 11 modes of the microstructured fiber purely excited with a special Wollaston prism-based method. The high modal and polarization purities of the beams after successive transformations were experimentally confirmed. We also proved the vortex nature of the output beams using shearing interferometry.
We show that the spectral interferometry method and the lateral point-force method used up to now to measure spectral dependence of the group and the phase modal birefringence in highly birefringent ...fibers with linearly polarized eigenmodes, can be after some modifications extended for the class of spun highly birefringent fibers with elliptically polarized modes. By combining the two methods, it is possible to determine spectral dependence of the group and phase elliptical birefringence in spun highly birefringent fibers. Moreover, if the fiber spin pitch is independently measured, the spectral dependence of ellipticity angle of polarization eigenmodes as well as the built-in linear phase and group birefringence, can be also obtained using the analytical relations between the parameters of spun and non-spun fibers. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in spectral measurements (700-1600 nm) of the spun side-hole and microstructured highly birefringent fibers with different birefringence dispersion and spin pitches ranging from 4.1 to 200 mm.
