•Paper reviews different researches, concerning fired clay bricks made with wastes.•Properties are highly influenced by materials and procedures.•Reviewed methods and procedures do not meet ...industrial standards.•Mechanical, physical and thermal properties have been summarized.•Harmonization between researches is mandatory for scaling up the use of wastes.
The addition of residues into clay matrix has been widely reported and reviewed during last decade. The heterogeneity of wastes and the lack of detailed information make difficult to provide an overall framework for comparing results. With the aim of showing an acceptable estimation of fired clay bricks properties, when wastes are added, this paper summarizes raw materials characterization and methods of most cited papers. Despite mechanical, physical and thermal properties highly depend on several parameters when residues are classified and results are related to the relative variation of density, a good correlation, between different papers, is found.
•The dependence of plant biomass production under UV-A radiation on genotype and/or further environmental conditions is analysed.•Protection offered by the leaf structure and/or biochemical ...composition commonly prevents UV-A induced photosynthetic inhibition.•UV-A regulates the accumulation of specific phenolic compounds rather than total phenolics.•The overall lack of correlation between UV-A and UV-B effects does imply distinct molecular and physiological responses under the two wavelength bands.•The review considers a role of photoreceptors (UVR8, phototropins, phytochromes and cryptochromes) in plant responses to UV-A exposure.
Ultraviolet-A radiation (UV-A: 315–400nm) is a component of solar radiation that exerts a wide range of physiological responses in plants. Currently, field attenuation experiments are the most reliable source of information on the effects of UV-A. Common plant responses to UV-A include both inhibitory and stimulatory effects on biomass accumulation and morphology. UV-A effects on biomass accumulation can differ from those on root: shoot ratio, and distinct responses are described for different leaf tissues. Inhibitory and enhancing effects of UV-A on photosynthesis are also analysed, as well as activation of photoprotective responses, including UV-absorbing pigments. UV-A-induced leaf flavonoids are highly compound-specific and species-dependent. Many of the effects on growth and development exerted by UV-A are distinct to those triggered by UV-B and vary considerably in terms of the direction the response takes. Such differences may reflect diverse UV-perception mechanisms with multiple photoreceptors operating in the UV-A range and/or variations in the experimental approaches used. This review highlights a role that various photoreceptors (UVR8, phototropins, phytochromes and cryptochromes) may play in plant responses to UV-A when dose, wavelength and other conditions are taken into account.
Abstract Background Inevitable hepatitis C virus (HCV) recurrence after liver transplantation is a major barrier to the survival of a transplanted liver. It may be promoted by immunosuppression and ...the emergence of CD4+ CD25+ regulatory T cells (Treg). Treg cells can mediate the induction and maintenance of immunological self-tolerance as well as transplant tolerance. We investigated the effects of cyclosporine (CsA), a widely used immunosuppressive agent, on human CD4+ CD25+ Treg cells. Methods Human CD4+ CD25+ cells isolated from healthy donors were cultured in the presence of 40 or 400 ng/mL CsA. The suppressive activity of Treg was assessed in mixed leukocyte reactions (MLR) using CD25+ and autologous activated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Phenotype analysis (flow cytometric, Q-PCR) and cytokine production (ELISA) of Treg cells were then performed on cultures. Results CsA (40 or 400 ng/mL) inhibited the proliferative capacity of PBMC and CD4+ CD25+ Treg in a dose-dependent manner. Interestingly, addition of 40 ng/mL CsA in MLR impaired the suppressive activity of CD4+ CD25+ cells, whereas a higher dose of CsA had no effect on Treg function. It appears that a therapeutic dose of CsA (40 ng/mL) did not change the phenotype of CD4+ CD25+ T cells, but altered Treg activity by switching the regulatory to an inflammatory cytokine profile. Conclusion CsA significantly impaired the function of CD4+ CD25+ Treg cells by inducing interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) secretion. The present studies suggested that CsA may block the induction of immune tolerance and decrease the risk of hepatitis C recurrence.
In dry dosage forms in contact with surfaces with a thin mucus layer, such as a buccal mucoadhesive film, two stages need to occur to establish the mucoadhesive bond, namely a contact and a ...consolidation stage.
The buccal route of administration has a number of advantages including bypassing the gastrointestinal tract and the hepatic first pass effect. Mucoadhesive films are retentive dosage forms and release drug directly into a biological substrate. Furthermore, films have improved patient compliance due to their small size and reduced thickness, compared for example to lozenges and tablets. The development of mucoadhesive buccal films has increased dramatically over the past decade because it is a promising delivery alternative to various therapeutic classes including peptides, vaccines, and nanoparticles. The “film casting process” involves casting of aqueous solutions and/or organic solvents to yield films suitable for this administration route. Over the last decade, hot-melt extrusion has been explored as an alternative manufacturing process and has yielded promising results. Characterization of critical properties such as the mucoadhesive strength, drug content uniformity, and permeation rate represent the major research areas in the design of buccal films. This review will consider the literature that describes the manufacture and characterization of mucoadhesive buccal films.

•The buccal route has been exploited for selected potent small molecules.•Research to achieve buccal insulin delivery is based on avoiding the GIT.•Buccal insulin clinical trials have ...led to variable results with no FDA approvals.•There is a rationale for buccal delivery of glucagon-like peptide 1 analogues.•Development of printed films is timely and offer an opportunity for complex systems.
Buccal delivery of macromolecules (biologics) sets a great challenge for researchers. Although several niche small molecule products have been approved as simple sprays, tablets and oral films, it is not simply a case of adapting existing technologies to biologics. Buccal delivery of insulin has reached clinical trials with two approaches: oromucosal sprays of the peptide with permeation enhancers, and embedded gold nanoparticles in a dissolvable film. However, neither of these approaches have led to FDA approvals likely due to poor efficacy, submaximal peptide loading in the dosage form, and to wide intra-subject variability in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. It is likely however that printed film designs with lower molecular weight stable biotech payloads including lipophilic glucagon-like 1 (GLP-1) agonists and macrocycles with long half-lives will generate greater efficacy than was achieved to date for insulin.
In recent years the relationship between Graves’ disease (GD), TSH, TRAb and thyroid carcinoma has been studied. Research studies show a higher prevalence and aggressiveness of thyroid carcinoma in patients with GD, however other researchers refute these findings suggesting it's due to selection bias. Increasing evidence suggests a causal relationship between GD and the development of thyroid carcinoma, mainly because of the existence of TSI autoantibodies that could stimulate the focus of malignancy. It is believed that cytokines produced locally in patients with GD work alongside with TRAb regulating the aggressiveness of papillary thyroid carcinoma in these patients. Within the cells recruited by the tumor to elude the immune system we find Treg lymphocytes, which have been found to be increased in patients with GD, leading to a diminished immune response, creating a permissive environment for cell proliferation.
Since this is a relatively new line of research, there is no consensus on the subject and its relevance for the treatment of patients with GD. The aim of this article is to show recent literature available on the subject.
