Abstract
Objectives
Febrile neutropenia (FN) creates concern in paediatrics due to the risk of serious bacterial infections (SBI). Protocols with empiric antibiotics designed for hematology and ...oncology are often applied in healthy children with FN despite lower rates of SBI in this population. This study quantifies rates of infections in presumed immunocompetent children hospitalized with suspected viral illnesses and FN.
Methods
This was a retrospective chart review of healthy children admitted to the Stollery Children’s Hospital between 2007 and 2017 with fever, absolute neutrophil counts < 0.5 × 109/L, and viral symptoms. Primary outcomes were the incidence of SBI and bacterial pneumonia.
Results
Of 383 encounters reviewed, 96 admissions for 82 patients met inclusion criteria. Eighty-eight encounters (91.7%) were managed with empiric antibiotics. Viruses were identified in 42% of encounters. Three blood cultures were positive for coagulase-negative Staphylococcus and one for Coryneforms, all considered contaminants. There were three urinary tract infections and two pneumonias. Eighty-three per cent of patients had normalization of neutrophil counts, with a median neutropenia duration of 3.2 months. Follow-up diagnoses included chronic benign neutropenia of childhood (N = 17) and three rheumatologic/autoimmune conditions (N = 3).
Conclusion
Our results support previous findings of low rates of invasive bacterial infections in healthy children with FN. With an SBI rate of 3.1% and few patients found to have any pathologic etiology for their neutropenia, prospective studies would be valuable to evaluate the need for a practice change regarding antibiotic use in low-risk patients with suspected viral-induced neutropenia.
O principal objetivo desse artigo é avaliar os indicadores de qualidade de vida no trabalho (QVT) para os professores universitários, e comparar os indicadores de QVT em universidades públicas no ...Brasil e no Canadá. A amostra deste estudo é constituída por 205 professores de Minas Gerais e 269 do Quebec. Os dados foram coletados através de um questionário online aplicado em fevereiro e março de 2013. Três diferenças significativas foram encontradas entre as duas amostras: sentido no trabalho, comprometimento afetivo e comprometimento de continuidade. Os professores brasileiros parecem encontrar mais sentido no trabalho do que os canadenses e têm mais comprometimento afetivo com suas instituições.
Recent research has demonstrated that the perception of injustice at work may increase psychological health-related problems. The purpose of this study is to examine the moderating effect of coworker ...support and work autonomy on the relationships between both distributive and procedural justice and psychological distress. Results, on the basis of responses to questionnaires given to 248 prison employees, show that coworker support moderates the relationships between both forms of justice and psychological distress. Specifically, these relationships are weakened when employees benefit from a high level of coworker support. Furthermore, work autonomy moderates the relationship between procedural justice and psychological distress but not the relationship between distributive justice and psychological distress. Thus, procedural injustice is less likely to increase psychological distress when the level of work autonomy is high.
The purpose of this study is to develop and validate the Basic Psychological Needs at Work Scale (BPNWS) in French, but items are also provided in English in the article. The BPNWS is a work‐related ...self‐report instrument designed to measure the degree to which the needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, as identified by Self‐Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000), are satisfied at work. Using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, the first study examines the structure of the BPNWS in a group of 271 workers. The second study tests the measurement invariance of the scale in a group of 851 teachers from two different cultures, Canada and France. Results support the three‐factor structure and show adequate internal consistency, as well as nomological validity across samples.
Purpose
The aim of this article is to deepen the understanding of the relationships between perceived organizational support (POS) and the dimensions of organizational commitment (i.e. affective, ...normative and continuance commitment), and to test the moderating effect of
locus
of control and work autonomy.
Design/methodology/approach
This study, based on a cross‐sectional research design, was conducted in an organizational setting. The sample includes 249 prison employees. The data were collected through questionnaires.
Findings
The results show that POS is positively and significantly correlated with affective and normative commitment. In addition, the results of the hierarchical multiple regression analyses support the moderating effect of
locus
of control and work autonomy with regard to the relationship between POS and affective commitment.
Practical implications
This study highlights the importance of providing support to employees in order to foster their affective and normative commitment to the organization. Moreover, the results provide evidence in favour of managerial interventions aimed at enhancing perceived control and, consequently, minimizing the negative effects of a lack of organizational support on employees' affective commitment.
Originality/value
In addition to taking into account three dimensions of organizational commitment, this study underlines personality and job design factors that can modulate the relationship between POS and organizational commitment.
O propósito original deste estudo foi realizar uma análise exploratória do sentido do trabalho para profissionais de enfermagem comparando-os por nível hierárquico (níveis técnico e superior) e por ...características do ambiente de trabalho. Aplicou-se um questionário estruturado contendo escalas para sentido do trabalho, comprometimento afetivo e estresse no trabalho. Os resultados foram tratados com estatística descritiva, análise fatorial exploratória, análise de correlações e comparação de médias, e confirmaram que o nível hierárquico e o ambiente definem diferenças na percepção do sentido do trabalho e de construtos relacionados a ele. Como o trabalho de campo demandou longas horas de permanência nos hospitais, o estudo foi enriquecido por observações e conversas durante o acompanhamento do serviço. A conjunção de métodos permitiu ampliar o conhecimento sobre fatores que suscitam a experiência de sentido do trabalho em enfermagem. Ele pode emergir de fatores como aumento de empregabilidade, distinção social, conciliação trabalho-família e natureza da relação com gestores e líderes. A perda do sentido, além da queda da produtividade, pode estar associada a comportamentos de resistência ou mesmo de retaliação na forma de absenteísmo e troca de emprego.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether emotional intelligence (EI) is a moderating variable in loan officers' information processing. To answer the research question, an experimental ...investigation was conducted and participants' judgments and decisions were examined in light of three methods of disclosing contingencies. Participants indicated their judgments and decisions in regard to the following four variables: the overall risk rating, the overall trend rating, the loan granting decision and the interest rate decision. Three different types of disclosure of contingencies were used as independent manipulated variables. Results regarding the impact of EI as a moderating variable, whether in relation to disclosure method and loan officers' judgments or the relationship between their judgments and decisions, do not indicate that loan officers' EI has a significant moderating effect on these relationships.
O principal objetivo deste artigo é testar a aplicabilidade de um modelo de Qualidade de Vida no Trabalho (QVT). Especificamente, buscou-se descrever o modelo de QVT adotado, analisar os indicadores ...e fatores de QVT na perspectiva dos professores universitários de instituições públicas, e verificar a adequabilidade do referido modelo para avaliar QVT em instituições do setor público. Aplicou-se um questionário online em dois momentos distintos, sendo que a amostra foi constituída inicialmente por 354 professores de Minas Gerais e 317 professores do Quebec. No segundo momento, respectivamente, 274 e 252 professores participaram da pesquisa. Os dados foram coletados entre janeiro e maio de 2013. A análise de correlação mostrou que, tanto os indicadores quanto os fatores que foram analisados apresentaram resultados consistentes com os do modelo de referência. Os resultados mostram que os construtos complementares relacionados ao sentido do trabalho, também foram consistentes com as pesquisas anteriores que subsidiaram a construção do modelo sistêmico de análise da QVT.
Objetivo: Explorar o sentido do trabalho, analisando e comparando como ele é vivenciado por trabalhadores submetidos a diferentes vínculos empregatícios. Originalidade/valor: A pesquisa é relevante ...porque avança na discussăo sobre a flexibilizaçao das relaçöes de trabalho e aponta o impacto da flexibilizaçao na forma como profissionais vivenciam o trabalho e atribuem sentido a ele. Ademais, detectamos na literatura uma lacuna em pesquisas empíricas que relacionem sentido do trabalho a diferentes tipos de vínculos empregatícios. Design/metodologia/abordagem: Conduzimos uma pesquisa qualitativa e exploratoria com professores de uma mesma instituiçao de ensino superior (IES), mas que atuam sob diferentes vínculos de trabalho. Participaram da pesquisa 45 docentes, cujos relatos foram submetidos a análise do discurso. Resultados: Inicialmente, os resultados reforçaram as seis categorias propostas por Morin (2001): 1. o trabalho que gera resultado, 2. é intrínsecamente satisfatório, 3. moralmente aceitável, 4. fonte de relaçöes humanas satisfatórias, 5. garante segurança e autonomia e 6. mantém a pessoa ocupada. Além disso, também foram identificadas tres novas categorias associadas ao trabalho do professor na atualidade: "trabalho como chamado (calling)", "trabalho como fator identitário" e "trabalho como prática masoquista". Nossos resultados apontaram para a complexidade de manter profissionais trabalhando muitas vezes lado a lado, mas submetidos a diferentes vínculos. Ressentimento, angustia e frustraçao foram alguns dos sentimentos que consideramos estar associados a essa realidade. Por isso, eles representam um desafio a ser enfrentado pelas organizaçöes.
