Viral encephalopathy and retinopathy (VER), otherwise known as viral nervous necrosis (VNN), is a major devastating threat for aquatic animals. Betanodaviruses have been isolated in at least 70 ...aquatic animal species in marine and in freshwater environments throughout the world, with the notable exception of South America. In this review, the main features of betanodavirus, including its diversity, its distribution and its transmission modes in fish, are firstly presented. Then, the existing diagnosis and detection methods, as well as the different control procedures of this disease, are reviewed. Finally, the potential of selective breeding, including both conventional and genomic selection, as an opportunity to obtain resistant commercial populations, is examined.
An efficient copper‐catalyzed enantioselective conjugate addition of dimethylzinc to α,β‐ and α,β,γ,δ‐unsaturated 2‐acyl‐N‐methylimidazoles has been achieved using a chiral bidentate hydroxyalkyl‐NHC ...ligand. The reactions proceeded with both excellent regio‐ and enantioselectivity (14 examples, 87–95 % ee) to afford the desired 1,4‐adducts, which were easily transformed to the corresponding aldehydes, esters, and ketones. Subsequently, this powerful methodology was therefore successfully applied in the synthesis of natural products. Furthermore, an iterative process was also disclosed leading to highly desirable 1,3‐desoxypropionate skeletons (up to 94 % d.e.).
The enantioselective conjugate addition of dimethylzinc to (poly)unsaturated 2‐acyl‐N‐methylimidazoles proceeds under Cu catalysis with excellent regio‐ and enantioselectivities (up to 95 % ee). The resulting 1,4‐adducts can be easily transformed to the corresponding aldehydes, esters, ketones, and amines. This methodology was successfully applied in the synthesis of 1,3‐desoxypropionate subunits and natural products.
Temperature is considered as the major factor determining virus inactivation in the environment. Food industries, therefore, widely apply temperature as virus inactivating parameter. This review ...encompasses an overview of viral inactivation and virus genome degradation data from published literature as well as a statistical analysis and the development of empirical formulae to predict virus inactivation. A total of 658 data (time to obtain a first log10 reduction) were collected from 76 published studies with 563 data on virus infectivity and 95 data on genome degradation. Linear model fitting was applied to analyse the effects of temperature, virus species, detection method (cell culture or molecular methods), matrix (simple or complex) and temperature category (<50 and ≥50°C). As expected, virus inactivation was found to be faster at temperatures ≥50°C than at temperatures <50°C, but there was also a significant temperature–matrix effect. Virus inactivation appeared to occur faster in complex than in simple matrices. In general, bacteriophages PRD1 and PhiX174 appeared to be highly persistent whatever the matrix or the temperature, which makes them useful indicators for virus inactivation studies. The virus genome was shown to be more resistant than infectious virus. Simple empirical formulas were developed that can be used to predict virus inactivation and genome degradation for untested temperatures, time points or even virus strains.
Contact dermatitis linked to cosmetic products is a very common reason for visits to the dermatologist, and in more than half the cases, it is due to an allergic reaction. Fragrances are most often ...the culprit. The aim of the study was to describe the common fragrance allergens in different categories of cosmetic products available on the European market. We wanted to assess the influence of cosmetic type and distribution channel on the presence of fragrance allergens. There are the allergens whose concentration exceeds 0.001% in leave-on products and 0.01% in rinse-off products. A total of 2044 commercial hygiene, care, and makeup cosmetic products were analyzed to specifically study regulated fragrance allergens. The influence that the product category and its distribution channel (retail stores and specialized stores such as beauty institutes or hairdressers and pharmacy) have on the prevalence of these allergens was evaluated. The Kruskal-Wallis test has been used for statistical data analysis. There is a wide range of fragrance allergens, the most common being limonene (found in about 30% of products tested), linalool (just over a quarter of the products tested), and benzyl alcohol (approximately 16% of the products tested). The average number of allergens found and their nature varies depending on the type of product in question (maximum number for shampoos and oral care with about 70 allergens and minimum number for nail polish and makeup for eyes with fewer than 10 allergens). In the area of hygiene, deodorants and oral hygiene products are particularly noteworthy, the former for their significantly high number of allergens and the latter for their low number. There is also a significant difference between the number of allergens found in eye makeup and foundations. Our results indicate that the number of regulated fragrance allergens is particularly influenced by the type of products.

•A rapid method for dyes determination in aquaculture products was developed.•An oxidizing step introduced to quantitate parent forms.•Fingerprints comparison as developed tool to ...monitor illegal dyes in aquaculture.•Study of metabolome led to some endogenous and exogenous metabolites discovering.
The aim of the study was to initiate an exhaustive strategy of control by implementing both targeted and non-targeted metabolomics approaches. A LC–MS/MS method including an oxidative step for most of dyes was developed and validated to target the analysis of 14 residues belonging to different families of dyes. The method was suitable for the quantitative confirmation of 13 dyes at low ppb levels. The metabolomics approach objective was to compare fingerprints between farmed fish treated with malachite green and farmed fish treated with victoria pure blue bo. Analytical information on modifications in the metabolome of muscle, liver and plasma was exploited by HRMS following by multivariate statistics and revealed some direct or endogenous metabolites among relevant mass features contributing to the constructed models. These two approaches, either appropriate biomarkers either enlarged targeted dyes are explored concomitantly to help improving the strategy for tracking new illegal practices in aquaculture.
Frailty is associated with reduced physiological reserve, lack of independence, and depression and may be salient for identifying older adults at increased risk of suicide attempt.
To examine the ...association between frailty and risk of suicide attempt and how risk differs based on components of frailty.
This nationwide cohort study integrated databases from the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) inpatient and outpatient health care services, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services data, and national suicide data. Participants included all US veterans aged 65 years or older who received care at VA medical centers from October 1, 2011, to September 30, 2013. Data were analyzed from April 20, 2021, to May 31, 2022.
Frailty, defined based on a validated cumulative-deficit frailty index measured using electronic health data and categorized into 5 levels: nonfrailty, prefrailty, mild frailty, moderate frailty, and severe frailty.
The main outcome was suicide attempts through December 31, 2017, provided by the national Suicide Prevention Applications Network (nonfatal attempts) and Mortality Data Repository (fatal attempts). Frailty level and components of the frailty index (morbidity, function, sensory loss, cognition and mood, and other) were assessed as potential factors associated with suicide attempt.
The study population of 2 858 876 participants included 8955 (0.3%) who attempted suicide over 6 years. Among all participants, the mean (SD) age was 75.4 (8.1) years; 97.7% were men, 2.3% were women, 0.6% were Hispanic, 9.0% were non-Hispanic Black, 87.8% were non-Hispanic White, and 2.6% had other or unknown race and ethnicity. Compared with patients without frailty, risk of suicide attempt was uniformly higher among patients with prefrailty to severe frailty, with adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) of 1.34 (95% CI, 1.27-1.42; P < .001) for prefrailty, 1.44 (95% CI, 1.35-1.54; P < .001) for mild frailty, 1.48 (95% CI, 1.36-1.60; P < .001) for moderate frailty, and 1.42 (95% CI, 1.29-1.56; P < .001) for severe frailty. Lower levels of frailty were associated with greater risk of lethal suicide attempt (aHR, 1.20 95% CI, 1.12-1.28 for prefrail veterans). Bipolar disorder (aHR, 2.69; 95% CI, 2.54-2.86), depression (aHR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.67-1.87), anxiety (aHR, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.28-1.45), chronic pain (aHR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.15-1.29), use of durable medical equipment (aHR, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.03-1.25), and lung disease (aHR, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.06-1.17) were independently associated with increased risk of suicide attempt.
This cohort study found that among US veterans aged 65 years or older, frailty was associated with increased risk of suicide attempts and lower levels of frailty were associated with greater risk of suicide death. Screening and involvement of supportive services across the spectrum of frailty appear to be needed to help reduce risk of suicide attempts.
CC coupling: DiPPAM 1 and BINAP 2 ligands led to divergent behaviors in the asymmetric conjugate addition (ACA) of dialkylzinc reagents to linear aryldienones, which were applied to the development ...of a highly selective sequential asymmetric 1,6/1,4‐ACA process (see scheme; Tf = triflate, DBU = 1,8‐diazabicyclo5.4.0undec‐7‐ene).
Social support and mastery can protect against psychological distress in late life, carrying implications for theory and intervention. However, some groups have not been well studied, with African ...Americans receiving less empirical attention, especially in regard to their satisfaction with social support. In this study, samples of African American and White American community-dwelling older adults reported their perceived mastery, degree of psychological distress, and social support. A model investigating the separate relationships of these variables by race explained significantly more variance than a model for all participants combined. For both groups, mastery was significantly associated with lower psychological distress. However, among White Americans, social support was significantly associated with lower distress, while among African Americans, there was no relationship between satisfaction with social support and distress. The findings indicate that social support and mastery are important variables to consider in their relationship to psychological distress in later life and that diverse racial groups may display differing relationships among these variables.
•Semi-automated image processing tools developed for quantification of engineered microvascular.•Techniques presented to quantify microvessel alignment and support cell recruitment to ...microvessels.•Quantification of data from cross sections and whole mount preparations included.
The majority of reports in which microvascular network properties are quantified rely on manual measurements, which are time consuming to collect and somewhat subjective. Despite some progress in creating automated image analysis techniques, the parameters measured by these methods are limited. For example, no automated system has yet been able to measure support cell recruitment, which is an important indicator of microvascular maturity. Microvessel alignment is another parameter that existing programs have not measured, despite a strong dependence of performance on alignment in some tissues. Here we present two image analysis programs, a semi-automated program that analyzes cross sections of microvascular networks and a fully automated program that analyzes images of whole mount preparations. Both programs quantify standard characteristics as well as support cell recruitment and microvascular network alignment, and were highly accurate in comparison to manual measurements for engineered tissues containing self-assembled microvessels.
