Particle identification is one of the key requirements of the LHCb experiment. The ability to distinguish between pions, kaons and protons in a variety of final states is essential for the study of ...CP violation and rare decays of
B hadrons. The particle identification system is composed of two RICH detectors, covering the full angular acceptance of the spectrometer and designed to give particle identification for the momentum range of 1 up to 100
GeV/
c. The two RICH detectors are based on gaseous (C
4F
10 and CF
4) and aerogel radiators and an optical system of spherical and flat mirrors which focuses the Cherenkov photons onto the photon detectors planes. These are equipped with a total of 484 Hybrid Photon Detectors (HPDs). The silicon pixel detector of each HPD is read out to give a resolution on the photocathode of

We have evaluated the 64-channel Multianode Photo-Multiplier (MaPMT) with 8-stage dynodes for the LHCb RICH detectors. With a Beetle
1.2 chip to read-out the MaPMT, we have demonstrated that the ...MaPMT performance is as expected using particle beams and LED light sources. We have also measured the pulse shape from 12-stage dynode MaPMTs, read out with the Beetle
1.2-MA0 chip.
Abstract Objective Sleep deprivation (SD) can induce a prompt decrease in depressive symptoms within 24 h. Following the recovery night, however, a relapse into depression occurs in most patients. ...Recovery sleep, naps and even very short episodes of sleep (microsleep; MS) during SD have been shown to provoke a rapid relapse into depression. This study tested the hypothesis that modafinil reduces MS during SD and stabilizes the treatment response to PSD compared to placebo. Methods A total of 28 patients (13 men, 15 women; age 45.1 ± 12.1 years) with a major depressive episode and a cumulative daytime microsleep of five or more minutes were investigated using a double-blind placebo-controlled study design. All patients were treated with a stable mirtazapine monotherapy. A partial SD (PSD) was performed after one week. Additional morning treatment with modafinil vs. placebo started during PSD and was maintained over two weeks. Sleep-EEG and MS episodes were recorded with a portable EEG. Depression severity was assessed using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale before, during and after PSD and at follow-ups after one and two weeks. Results Patients treated with modafinil showed significantly reduced microsleep during PSD (11.63 ± 15.99 min) compared to the placebo group (47.77 ± 65.31 min). This suppression of MS was not associated with the antidepressive effect of PSD. Conclusions Compared to placebo, modafinil was efficient in reducing daytime microsleep following partial sleep deprivation but did not enhance the antidepressive effects of PSD and did not stabilize antidepressive effects over two weeks.
The 64-channel Multianode Photo Multiplier (MaPMT) has been evaluated as a candidate for the LHCb Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) photo detectors. We present result from data taken with a 3×3 array of ...closely packed MaPMTs mounted onto the RICH 1 prototype vessel, exposed to charged particle beams at CERN, and read out at LHC speed. Using a LED light source, we have performed spatial light scans to study the light collection efficiency of the MaPMTs We have also measured the performance of the MaPMTs as a function of the applied high voltage. Different dynode resistor chains have been used to study the tubes at low gains. In addition, we have studied the behaviour of the MaPMT in magnetic fields.

The LHCb experiment has been taking data at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN since the end of 2009. One of its key detector components is the Ring-Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) system. This ...provides charged particle identification over a wide momentum range, from 2–100 GeV/
c
. The operation and control, software, and online monitoring of the RICH system are described. The particle identification performance is presented, as measured using data from the LHC. Excellent separation of hadronic particle types (
π
, K, p) is achieved.
