This article examines the now largely forgotten, but then important, “Chicken and Egg War” of 1970–71. The chicken and egg war began when the Quebec government established the Fédération des ...producteurs d’œufs de consommation du Québec (FPOCQ) in 1970, a marketing board that began to restrict the price, grading, and sale of all eggs in Quebec, including egg imports from other provinces. The new board disrupted egg sales in Manitoba and Ontario, and it was not long before a series of legislative retaliations among the provinces took place, including strict import controls on broiler chickens and eggs and the seizure of out-of-province produce. Although predominantly contained to the neighbouring provinces of Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec, this event was significant because it resulted in appeals to the Supreme Court of Canada, claims made concerning the rights of provinces vis-à-vis the federal government, and the restriction of agricultural goods, in this case, poultry and eggs, across provincial boundaries. This episode also had serious political ramifications, including fractured relationships among farmers, consumers, other industry stakeholders, and politicians and heightened tensions surrounding the legality and authority of provincial agricultural marketing boards. Ultimately, this “war” provided a significant impetus for the federal government to establish a national system of supply management in the egg and poultry sectors, a system that remains today.

This is a sound, scholarly treatment of a remarkable individual. As well, Against the Odds will do much to restore the Bank of Canada as an institution to its rightful place at the centre of ...scholarly treatments of financial questions and the international negotiations surrounding them.
A mixed-methods approach was utilised in order to explore the impact of group Music Therapy on the negative symptoms of forensic clients with schizophrenia. Eight participants were involved in this ...exploratory study at Valkenberg hospital in the Western Cape, South Africa. The Music Therapy intervention consisted of eight sessions over a period of six weeks. Qualitative data were collected through video footage, with three excerpts being selected for thick descriptions to be written and, subsequent to the process of therapy, eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with the participants. Quantitative data were generated by structured interviews with the eight participants individually using the PANNS test both before and after the music therapy process. Qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis, while the quantitative data were presented through descriptive statistical analysis, and a paired sample t-test was conducted. Findings suggest that group Music Therapy affords forensic adult clients in a psychiatric hospital who are diagnosed with schizophrenia benefits in relation to their negative symptoms. The themes that emerged through thematic analysis were ‘Holding’, ‘Positive Experiences of Music Therapy’, ‘Togetherness’, ‘Activation’, ’Flexibility’ and ‘Inflexibility’. The quantitative data shows an overall improvement in the negative symptoms. A paired sample t-test calculates this improvement as too small to be statistically significant. However, the overall improvement shown in the quantitative data suggests the possibility that the group Music Therapy intervention may have effected a gradual positive shift over time and this requires further research. Although participants still displayed negative symptoms in their daily life in the ward, music therapy offered an environment in which well-being could be experienced and expressed.
Abstract
The chapter will document the Canadian reaction, as reflected in the demand of New Zealand, that Canada fundamentally alters its dairy supply management system in order to participate in the ...Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations. The Canadian government has resolutely refused to do so, supported wholeheartedly by dairy farmers throughout the country. This is in part because of the effect such an action would have on rural spaces and the debilitating result it would have on Canadian dairy production. As well, the chapter will address the issue of the cost of dairy products in New Zealand as compared with Canada. Part of this analysis will focus on the role of supermarkets in determining the price structure of milk in both Canada and New Zealand. Finally, the chapter will offer an examination of the New Zealand system as represented by Fonterra and the Canadian system as epitomized by dairy supply management.
A competitive advantage is the desired outcome of a sound marketing communication strategy. However, there are scant explorations of how marketing communication education can build competitive ...advantages for students entering the workforce. Taking an industry perspective, a leading CEO reflects upon marketing communication practice and raises questions about disciplinary changes in practice and the necessary response of marketing communication education. We explore these questions and derive insights through a literature review which assembles existing research in marketing communication education, and we explore these insights further using Collective Intelligence. Thought leaders in the marketing communication industry interact and share ideas, revealing key insights into necessary skill sets. The paper concludes with a discussion of marketing communication education and its competitive advantage for both work and life.
Like other livestock sectors, the Canadian egg industry has evolved substantially over time and will likely experience similarly significant change looking forward, with many of these changes ...determining the sustainability implications of and for the industry. Influencing factors include: technological and management changes at farm level and along the value chain resulting in greater production efficiencies and improved life cycle resource efficiency and environmental performance; a changing policy/regulatory environment; and shifts in societal expectations and associated market dynamics, including increased attention to animal welfare outcomes—especially in regard to changes in housing systems for laying hens. In the face of this change, effective decision-making is needed to ensure the sustainability of the Canadian egg industry. Attention both to lessons from the past and to the emerging challenges that will shape its future is required and multi- and interdisciplinary perspectives are needed to understand synergies and potential trade-offs between alternative courses of action across multiple aspects of sustainability. Here, we consider the past, present and potential futures for this industry through the lenses of environmental, institutional (i.e., regulatory), and socio-economic sustainability, with an emphasis on animal welfare as an important emergent social consideration. Our analysis identifies preferred pathways, potential pitfalls, and outstanding cross-disciplinary research questions.
In Australia, engaged scholarship oriented towards community development objectives has yet to be recognised in funding regimes as being inherently beneficial in terms of scholarly excellence and ...university rankings. While the civic role of universities is acknowledged by individual universities, higher education management and at the Federal policy level, they are most often framed as funding problems related to 'community service' rather than as research opportunities which can raise the university's profile by providing the basis for excellent research outputs and community enrichment. Community engagement has become a familiar term in the Australian higher education lexicon in recent years but there is still little institutional infrastructure that directly embodies the principles and sentiment of community engagement evident in current Australian universities. In this paper, the inaugural Director and Research Manager of the University of Queensland's Community Service and Research Centre reflect on their five years leading a Centre that was/has been privileged to enjoy significant institutional support and the lessons learnt in forging into unknown territories. The reflections focus on the Centre's seminal project, the Goodna Service Integration Project.

The border between Canada and the United States separates political sovereignties, but not the shared themes of cultural, social, and economic history that have unfolded since the 18th century. ...Transnationalism brings together original works that focus on the shared histories of the United States and Canada that have over two centuries created a distinct North American identity and sensibility.
