Simultaneous eastward and westward traveling surges were observed at Tjörnes, Iceland, and Syowa station, Antarctica, respectively. Several remarkable differences were identified. (1) The position of ...the initial bright spot was shifted by 1.7 to 2.3 MLT between both hemispheres. (2) The surges differ in traveling speed between the eastward traveling surge (6.5 km s−1) and the westward traveling surge (1.3 km s−1). (3) The Arase satellite was located on a geomagnetic field line connecting both ground stations and observed a significant excess in westward component of the magnetic field, which is consistent with the large shifts of the initial bright spots in both hemispheres. (4) The background Hall current flows eastward (Northern Hemisphere) and westward (Southern Hemisphere). The observed north‐south asymmetry of the traveling surges suggests that the ionosphere can play an essential role in controlling the fundamental spatiotemporal development of auroras in both hemispheres.
Plain Language Summary
Occasionally, the aurora suddenly brightens in local areas of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, causing explosive and widespread phenomena. At this time, it is known that a part of the aurora travels toward east or west from the point of the explosion; however, the formation mechanism of this traveling aurora is unknown. Recently, this traveling aurora has been reproduced by computer simulation, and it has been shown that the direction of its traveling is determined by the state of the ionosphere rather than by the projected motion of the source region in the magnetosphere. In this paper, we observed traveling auroras with two identical high‐speed cameras installed in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres simultaneously and clarified for the first time that the state of the ionosphere determines the direction of the traveling aurora. Understanding the mechanism of such connection between the space and the Earth is important for predicting the space environment required for various human activities and technologies using the space.

Background
Allergic rhinitis, a known risk factor for asthma onset, often accompanies mouth breathing. Mouth breathing may bypass the protective function of the nose and is anecdotally considered to ...increase asthma morbidity. However, there is no epidemiological evidence that mouth breathing is independently associated with asthma morbidity and sensitization to allergens. In this study, we aimed to clarify the association between mouth breathing and asthma morbidity and allergic/eosinophilic inflammation, while considering the effect of allergic rhinitis.
Methods
This community‐based cohort study, the Nagahama Study, contained a self‐reporting questionnaire on mouth breathing and medical history, blood tests, and pulmonary function testing. We enrolled 9804 general citizens of Nagahama City in the Shiga Prefecture, Japan.
Results
Mouth breathing was reported by 17% of the population and was independently associated with asthma morbidity. The odds ratio for asthma morbidity was 1.85 (95% CI, 1.27–2.62) and 2.20 (95% CI, 1.72–2.80) in subjects with mouth breathing alone and allergic rhinitis alone, which additively increased to 4.09 (95% CI, 3.01–5.52) when mouth breathing and allergic rhinitis coexisted. Mouth breathing in nonasthmatics was a risk for house dust mite sensitization, higher blood eosinophil counts, and lower pulmonary function after adjusting for allergic rhinitis.
Conclusion
Mouth breathing may increase asthma morbidity, potentially through increased sensitization to inhaled allergens, which highlights the risk of mouth‐bypass breathing in the ‘one airway, one disease’ concept. The risk of mouth breathing should be well recognized in subjects with allergic rhinitis and in the general population.
We investigated the use of micro-CT with contrast agent for the non-invasive characterisation of fixed mouse brain tissue specimens as a means to differentiate between grey and white matter.
Nine ...mice were divided into two groups for micro-CT (n=6) and myelin staining (n=3) experiments. Six mice underwent in vivo micro-CT and were then prepared for brain specimens by transcardiac perfusion with paraformaldehyde. The six mouse brains were soaked in two different concentrations of non-ionic iodinated contrast agents (60 and 150 mg ml(-1)). Immersion times used for each concentration of iodine were for 3, 7 and 14 days. Three-dimensional ex vivo micro-CT images were acquired with a resolution of 39 μm(3) to create isotropic images. The other three mice were stained for evaluation of the myelin structure.
Soaking the brains in non-ionic iodinated contrast agent resulted in clear differences in signal between the grey matter, the white matter and the ventricular spaces. The 150 mg ml(-1) contrast agent solution yielded images with better contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) than 60 mg ml(-1) iodine contrast agent solution. 14 days of soaking yielded images with better CNR than 3 and 7 days. The CT contrast of grey and white matter derived from the iodine-soaked fixed brains was strongly related to tissue myelin.
The present study demonstrated that micro-CT can be used to detect the mouse brain myelin structure at 3, 7 and 14 days after fixation using a CT contrast agent.
We present results of an archival coincidence analysis between Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) gamma-ray data and public neutrino data from the IceCube neutrino observatory's 40-string (IC 40) and ...59-string (IC 59) observing runs. Our analysis has the potential to detect either a statistical excess of neutrino + gamma-ray ( + γ) emitting transients or, alternatively, individual high gamma-multiplicity events, as might be produced by a neutrino observed by IceCube coinciding with a LAT-detected gamma-ray burst. Dividing the neutrino data into three data sets by hemisphere (IC 40, IC 59-North, and IC 59-South), we construct uncorrelated null distributions by Monte Carlo scrambling of the neutrino data sets. We carry out signal-injection studies against these null distributions, demonstrating sensitivity to individual + γ events of sufficient gamma-ray multiplicity, and to + γ transient populations responsible for >13% (IC 40), >9% (IC 59-North), or >8% (IC 59-South) of the gamma-coincident neutrinos observed in these data sets, respectively. Analyzing the unscrambled neutrino data, we identify no individual high-significance neutrino + high gamma-multiplicity events and no significant deviations from the test statistic null distributions. However, we observe a similar and unexpected pattern in the IC 59-North and IC 59-South residual distributions that we conclude reflects a possible correlation (p = 7.0%) between IC 59 neutrino positions and persistently bright portions of the Fermi gamma-ray sky. This possible correlation should be readily testable using eight years of further data already collected by IceCube. We are currently working with Astrophysical Multimessenger Observatory Network (AMON) partner facilities to generate low-latency + γ alerts from Fermi-LAT gamma-ray and IceCube and ANTARES neutrino data and distribute these in real time to AMON follow-up partners.
Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) is a major inducer of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in different cell types. TGF-β-mediated EMT is thought to contribute to tumour cell spread and ...metastasis. Sialyl Lewis antigens synthesised by fucosyltransferase (FUT) 3 and FUT6 are highly expressed in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) and are utilised as tumour markers for cancer detection and evaluation of treatment efficacy. However, the role of FUT3 and FUT6 in augmenting the malignant potential of CRC induced by TGF-β is unclear.
Colorectal cancer cell lines were transfected with siRNAs for FUT3/6 and were examined by cell proliferation, invasion and migration assays. The expression and phosphorylation status of TGF-β downstream molecules were analysed by western blot. Fucosylation of TGF-β receptor (TβR) was examined by lectin blot analysis.
Inhibition of FUT3/6 expression by siRNAs suppressed the fucosylation of type I TβR and phosphorylation of the downstream molecules, thereby inhibiting the invasion and migration of CRC cells by EMT.
Fucosyltransferase 3/6 has an essential role in cancer cell adhesion to endothelial cells by upregulation of sialyl Lewis antigens and also by enhancement of cancer cell migration through TGF-β-mediated EMT.
ABSTRACT We present a targeted search for blazar flux-correlated high-energy ( 1 TeV) neutrinos from six bright northern blazars, using the public database of northern hemisphere neutrinos detected ...during "IC40" 40-string operations of the IceCube neutrino observatory (2008 April to 2009 May). Our six targeted blazars are subjects of long-term monitoring campaigns by the VERITAS TeV γ-ray observatory. We use the publicly available VERITAS light curves to identify periods of excess and flaring emission. These predefined intervals serve as our "active temporal windows" in a search for an excess of neutrinos, relative to Poisson fluctuations of the near-isotropic atmospheric neutrino background, which dominates at these energies. After defining the parameters of an optimized search, we confirm the expected Poisson behavior with Monte Carlo simulations prior to testing for excess neutrinos in the actual data. We make two searches: one for excess neutrinos associated with the bright flares of Mrk 421 that occurred during the IC40 run, and one for excess neutrinos associated with the brightest emission periods of five other blazars (Mrk 501, 1ES 0806+524, 1ES 1218+304, 3C 66A, and W Comae), all significantly fainter than the Mrk 421 flares. We find no significant excess of neutrinos from the preselected blazar directions during the selected temporal windows. We derive 90% confidence upper limits on the number of expected flux-associated neutrinos from each search. These limits are consistent with previous point-source searches and Fermi GeV flux-correlated searches. Our upper limits are sufficiently close to the physically interesting regime that we anticipate that future analyses using already-collected data will either constrain models or yield discovery of the first blazar-associated high-energy neutrinos.
Summary Objective The purpose of this study was to examine the three-dimensional (3D) progression patterns of early acetabular cartilage damage in hip dysplasia using high-resolutional computed ...tomography (CT) arthrography. Design Thirty-two dysplastic hips of 26 Japanese symptomatic females including 21 hips in pre-stage of osteoarthritis (Kellgren–Lawrence (K–L) grade 0; mean patient age, 32.0 years) and 11 hips in early stage of osteoarthritis (K–L grade 1 or 2; mean patient age, 32.8 years) were examined. Isotropic high-resolutional CT arthrography with an image resolution of 0.5 mm in any orthogonal direction was performed. A 3D acetabular cartilage model was generated and we evaluated distribution of cartilage thickness in 12 zones after dividing the weight-bearing area of the hip joint in radial and lateral/medial directions. Results In pre-stage of osteoarthritis, significant differences in cartilage thickness were observed between the lateral and medial zones in all radial regions, most prominently in the antero-superior region. In early stage of osteoarthritis, no significant differences in cartilage thickness were observed, except in the most posterior region. The lateral–medial (LM) ratio was defined as cartilage thickness in the lateral zone divided by that in the medial zone, and hips with the LM ratio in the antero-superior region of <1.4 had significantly more extensive involvement of labral tears than hips with the LM ratio of ≥1.4. Conclusions In hip dysplasia, acetabular cartilage damage was probably occurred in the antero-superior lateral area. The LM ratio may be a sensitive index to quantify early cartilage damage associated with extent of labral disorders.

. The plot exhibited a characteristic trajectory, representing the regularity of the time series. Correlation integral and Lyapunov exponent analysis also showed properties of deterministic chaos; the presence of fractal dimension and positive Lyapunov exponent. Analysis of sensory information obtained in the robot with three different neural controllers revealed that the autonomous robot behaves in such a way that the flow of sensory information is governed by a deterministic rule, and this pattern is unique to each controller. Furthermore, the analysis in various environments exhibited that transitions from one trajectory to another on the return map occur during the course of autonomous behavior. The fractal and Lyapunov dimensions calculated in various conditions indicate that these dimension could be utilized to quantify the complexity of autonomous behavior and the relative difficulty of tasks. Analyses at different evolutionary stage revealed that behavioral performance correlates with fractal dimension. These studies using a miniature mobile robot that allowed to idealize the experimental conditions demonstrated firmly that the complex analysis could be utilized in evaluation and optimization of autonomous systems and the behavior.
Our aim was to assess the protective effect of hydrogen-rich water against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats using dynamic contrast-enhanced CT (DCE-CT). DCE-CT studies were performed in 30 ...rats (8 weeks old) on days 0, 2, 4 and 7 using multidetector row CT. The rats were divided into three groups: a control group (n = 6) with free access to standard water and without cisplatin injection, a non-treatment group (n = 12) with free access to standard water and injected with cisplatin (3.6 mg kg(-1) body weight) intraperitoneally on day 0 and a treatment group (n = 12) with free access to hydrogen-rich water starting from 7 days before cisplatin injection. The contrast clearance per unit renal volume (K(1)) was estimated from the DCE-CT data using the Patlak model. The contrast clearance of the entire kidney (K) was obtained by multiplying K(1) by the renal volume. The serum creatinine level was also measured on day 7. The K(1) and K values normalised by those on day 0 in the treatment group were significantly greater than those in the non-treatment group on days 2, 4 and 7. There were no significant differences in the normalised K value between the treatment and control groups on days 2 and 7. The serum creatinine level in the treatment group was significantly lower than that in the non-treatment group and was not significantly different from that in the control group. This study demonstrated that hydrogen-rich water ameliorates renal dysfunction due to cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats.
