The Fiqh Legal Maxim (al-qawā’id al-fiqhiyyah) or principles have an important role in facilitating the understanding of Islamic law. The Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) as an authoritative ...institution that establishes fatwas based on the fiqh legal maxim. This paper reviewed and analyzed the intensity and accuracy of the use of legal maxim in the fatwa of the Sharia Council - Indonesian Ulama Council (DSN-MUI). The focus of the study in this paper was the principle of al-aḥājah qad tunazzalu manzilah al-darūrah, which is contained in the book collection of DSN-MUI fatwas on Islamic finance from 2000 to 2012. The study in this paper was based on literature data analyzed using content analysis method inductively. The analysis includes fatwa mapping, the intensity of the use fiqh legal maxim, and the accuracy of the use of principle. This study concluded that the fatwa of the Indonesian Sharia Council-Ulama Council regarding sharia finance from 2000 to 2012 frequently used the fiqh legal maxim of al-ḥājah qad tunazzalu manzilah al-ḍarūrah āmmah kanat aw khāṣṣah as a foundation. The high intensity of the use of this principle in the fatwa related to Islamic finance showed that this principle was considered vital in responding to community problems related to Islamic finance. The use of this principle by the DSN-MUI as the basis for establishing law in the fatwa related to the products and services of Islamic Financial Institutions (LKS) needed by the society is appropriate and can answer the problems of economic law in Indonesia.
Sheep are a valuable livestock species worldwide, providing meat, milk, and various dairy products. This article aims to review the latest literature on the melatonin receptor 1A (MTNR1A) gene as a ...potential candidate gene associated with reproductive traits, particularly the litter size trait in sheep, by searching various databases for available literature. Studies have shown that different parts of the MTNR1A gene play various roles in sheep. By identifying marker genes associated with reproductive traits in MTNR1A polymorphisms linked to the litter size trait, breeders can achieve a faster selection response in sheep breeding by recognizing the genomic region where these genes are located and understanding their physiological functions. Therefore, highlighting the literature on these functions and their association with reproductive traits may contribute to improving the genetic makeup during sheep breeding.
The aim of this study was to ascertain the effects of adding green tea extract (GTE) to skim milk-egg yolk (SM-EY) extender on both the quality of post-thawed bull semen and the pregnancy rates of ...the recipient cows.
Twelve ejaculates from four Simmental bulls, aged 3 to 5 years and weighing 900 to 950 kg, were diluted SM-EY extender, added with 0, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15 mg GTE/100 mL extender and then frozen. After four weeks storage in liquid nitrogen, the sperm were thawed and evaluated for viability, motility, intact plasma membrane (IPM), and DNA fragmentation. Meanwhile, the estrus cycles of 48 recipient cows were synchronized by intramuscular administration of a single injection of 5 mg prostaglandin F2α. Estrus cows were divided into four equal groups and inseminated artificially 18 to 20 h after the onset of estrus by using semen from each extender group. Pregnancy was diagnosed by measuring serum progesterone levels at 21 days, followed by transrectal palpation 90 days after insemination.
The findings revealed that adding 0.1 mg of GTE/100 mL extender produced the highest percentages of sperm viability (70.67%±1.75%), motility (69.17%±1.47%), and IPM (69.23%±1.21%) and the lowest percentage of DNA fragmentation (3.00%±0.50%). The pregnancy diagnosis revealed that all cows (36/36) inseminated using frozen semen in GTE addition extender were pregnant (pregnancy rate 100%), whereas the pregnancy rate of the control group was 83.33% (10/12).
It may be concluded that 0.1 mg GTE/100 mL extender yields the best quality of spermatozoa and that all variants doses of GTE in extender produce a higher pregnancy rate among recipient cows.
The study aimed to determine the addition of green tea extract (GTE) in extender on the quality and DNA mutation of post-thawed Kacang buck sperm. The sperm DNA mutation was observed on nicotinamide ...adenine dinucleotide hydride (NADH) dehydrogenase 1 (ND1) of mitochondrial Deoxyribonucleic Acid (mtDNA). A pool of 12 Kacang buck ejaculates was diluted in skim milk-egg yolk extender contained 0, 0.05, 0.10, and 0.15 mg of GTE/100 mL for T0, T1, T2, and T3 group, respectively. Each of the aliquot groups was packaged in 0.25 mL French mini straw contained 60 million alive sperm and froze according to the protocol. The ND1 mtDNA amplification of samples was carried out Polymerase Chain Reaction machine, followed by DNA sequencing using the Sanger method. Meanwhile, the phylogenetic tree was constructed using the neighbor-joining (NJ) method with MEGA 7.0 software. The results showed that the T2 group maintained the highest quality for Kacang buck post-thawed semen. There was the highest percentages of sperms viability, motility, intact plasma membrane (IPM), the lowest of malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF), the total and types of ND1 mtDNA mutation frequency. The phylogenetic tree analysis revealed that the clade of the T2 group was most closely related to the sequence reference. However, there was no correlation between the semen quality parameters (sperm viability, motility, IPM, MDA concentration, and SDF) with ND1 mtDNA mutation of post-thawed Kacang buck semen. It could be concluded that GTE was useful as an antioxidant for Kacang buck semen extender for frozen sperm.

Kacang buck sperm is cryosensitive due to the seminal plasma of semen itself. Meanwhile, bull seminal plasma contains the insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) complex, which is cryoprotective. The study was conducted to determine the effects of Simmental bull seminal plasma with IGF-1 on the fertility of post-thawed Kacang buck semen.
Buck semen was diluted in the following skim milk-egg yolk extender preparations: Without the addition of Simmental bull seminal plasma IGF-1 complex protein (T0); with the addition of 12-μg Simmental bull seminal plasma IGF-1 complex protein (T1); and with the addition of 24-μg Simmental bull seminal plasma IGF-1 complex protein (T2). The extended semen was packed in 0.25-mL straws and frozen. Post-thawed semen fertility was evaluated based on the following variables: Sperm motility, viability, intact plasma membrane (IPM), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, capacitation status, and acrosome reaction. The difference in each variable among the groups was evaluated using analysis of variance, followed by Tukey's honestly significant difference test, at a 95% level of significance. Meanwhile, principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify the principal component of semen fertility among the seven parameters.
The T1 group showed the highest sperm motility, viability, IPM, and percentage of incapacitated sperm and the lowest MDA levels, percentage of capacitated sperm, and acrosome reaction. PCA revealed that sperm motility had a moderate to very robust correlation with other variables and is the most crucial parameter, accounting for 80.79% of all variables.
The IGF-1 complex in Simmental bull seminal plasma was useful for increasing the fertility of post-thawed Kacang buck semen, and sperm motility was the principal component of semen fertility.
The purpose of this study was to determine the benefits of L-arginine addition in skim milk extender to maintain the quality of goat spermatozoa in chilled storage.
A total of 18 ejaculates from ...three healthy goats with weight and age of 45 kg and 4-5 years, respectively, were divided into three groups. The control group contained goat semen diluted in a skim milk extender without L-arginine; Treatment I and Treatment II contained goat semen diluted in a skim milk extender with added L-arginine 4 and 6 mM, respectively. These three groups were chilled at 5°C and evaluated daily for 5 days. Observed variables were viability, motility, intact plasma membrane (IPM), malondialdehyde (MDA) level, necrosis, and apoptosis of spermatozoa.
The addition of L-arginine 4 mM was the best treatment in maintaining viability, motility, and IPM and a decreased MDA level, percentage of necrosis, and apoptosis of goat spermatozoa. An ejaculate in this extender can be divided into 37 doses for intracervical insemination in <1 ml volume with 125 million motile spermatozoa.
Goat semen retained its quality when kept for 5 days in chilled storage by adding L-arginine in skim milk extender.
Madura cattle are the germplasm of native cattle on the verge of extinction because of crossbreeding. Therefore, the present study was aimed to determine the serum nerve growth factor (NGF) ...concentration as a predictor of fresh ejaculate fertility parameters in Madura bull candidates. Eleven Madura bull candidates used for frozen semen production were selected for the study. Blood samples were collected using a vacutainer from the jugular vein for analyzing serum NGF and testosterone levels. Meanwhile, semen collection was conducted using an artificial vagina for sperm motility, viability, and concentration assessment. Data were analyzed to determine the correlation among variables and the linear regression of NGF concentration to other significant variables. The result showed that NGF had a significant correlation (p<0.05) with testosterone levels, sperm motility, viability, and concentration. A significant correlation was observed between testosterone levels, sperm concentration, and sperm viability. The regression equation among significantly correlated variables was determined. For artificial insemination, suitable bull ejaculates for obtaining frozen semen should reach at least 2.12 ng/mL of NGF levels, with sperm viability, sperm concentration, and testosterone levels of more than 78.63%, 1,462.177 million/mL ejaculate, and 25.67 ng/mL, respectively. This is the first study to identify NGF as a predictor of male fertility in bull candidates of Madura cattle. Therefore, NGF levels could be used as a marker of male fertility in Madura bull cattle candidates. Thus, based on the minimum NGF levels, the ejaculate of Madura bull candidate that meets the requirements for frozen semen production could predict fertility.
This study aimed to develop equations to predict daily milk production (DMP) based on linear body and udder morphometry of Holstein Friesian (HF) dairy cows.
The experiment was conducted on 174 ...lactating HF dairy cows reared by farmers at different locations under similar conditions. The age, parity, and body condition score of experimental animals were limited to 0.25 of the standard deviation value above or below the average. The average DMP was based on farmers' records. Morphometry components, i.e., body length (BL); chest circumference (CC); front udder height (FUH), rear udder height (RUH); and udder circumference (UC) were directly measured using a tape; meanwhile, body weight (BW) was estimated using the Indonesia Winter formula. The relationship variables of morphometry components (body and udder morphometry) and BW on DMP were analyzed by regression.
The result showed no correlation (p>0.05) between CC and BW on DMP. Meanwhile, DMP obtained linear regression (p<0.05) with the mathematical equation: 1.30+0.11*BL; 13.90+0.41*FUH; 11.02+0.18*RUH; and 3.87+0.16*UC.
This study shows that the DMP of dairy cows could be predicted based on their BL and udder morphometry.

This study aimed to determine the sex ratio of the ...offspring of cows inseminated with Y-bearing sperm enriched by Percoll density gradient centrifugation and swim-up, combined with delayed fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI).
Ejaculates of Simmental bulls were divided into four equal portions and grouped as T0 (control, non-sexed semen), T1 and T2 were sexed semen using Percoll density gradient centrifugation three and five levels, respectively, and T3 was sexed semen using swim-up. After the sex was sorted, the semen was diluted in a tris-egg yolk extender, packaged in French mini-straws containing 50 million live sperm cells, and frozen. Pre-sexed, post-sexed, and post-thawed spermatozoa were evaluated based on progressive motility, viability, intact plasma membrane, and abnormality. The post-thawed semen of T0 was artificially inseminated to recipient cows at 12 h after onset of estrus (not delayed FTAI). Meanwhile, the delayed FTAI was conducted 18-20 h after onset of estrus using the T0, the best of T1 and T2, and the T3 post-thawed semen.
The Percoll density gradient centrifugation reduced motility, viability, and intact plasma membrane but increased sperm abnormalities. Meanwhile, the swim-up process increased motility, viability, and intact plasma membrane of sperm cells but decreased sperm abnormalities. Post-thawed semen decreased motility, viability, and intact plasma membrane of sperm cells but increased sperm abnormalities. The sex ratio of the Simmental crossbred offspring was 96.08% and 100% in T1 and T3, respectively, compared to 48.25% and 67.39% in T0 not delayed and delayed FTAI, respectively.
The Percoll density gradient centrifugation and swim-up methods are prospective for obtaining male offspring.
