The 2D Displacement Discontinuity Method (DDM) is combined with a complementarity algorithm to model the quasi‐static formation and patterns of wing cracks that emanate from regions of stress ...concentration along a sliding frictional flaw in an otherwise homogeneous and isotropic elastic material. Because stress states and geometry change with sliding on the flaw and wing crack propagation, one cannot specify the boundary conditions a priori. Under these circumstances complementarity is superior to other well‐known contact algorithms. We focus on meter scale phenomena where mineralogical heterogeneity (common to centimeter‐scale laboratory samples) and 3D geometry (common to kilometer‐scale crustal structures) reasonably can be ignored. Analytical solutions to the elastic boundary value problem of the closed sliding flaw include those that assume no friction, uniform friction, and a cohesive end zone (CEZ), and those that assume infinitesimal or straight wing cracks. Here we generalize the problem to consider linearly varying friction in the CEZ and curved wing cracks, and we allow the sliding flaw to open when mechanical interaction with the wing crack dictates that it should. Trace lengths of 135 strike‐slip faults in sandstone are linearly related to wing crack lengths ranging from 0.16 to 72 m and correspond to a range of remote principal stress ratios: 0.06 ≤ σ2/σ1 ≤ 0.2. Opening displacement profiles of wing cracks from the numerical model can be significantly different from analytical solutions. These solutions may produce significant errors in stable crack length for curved propagation paths. The smeared out stress concentration in the CEZ and the heterogeneity in strength of rock suggest that multiple wing cracks may form in one slip event. The mechanical interactions of these cracks leads to kink angles that increase with distance from the flaw tip, a relationship commonly observed in nature.
Strong evidence indicates that impaired cognition is a core element of depression, and antidepressant treatment may ameliorate cognitive impairments experienced by depressive patients. Present study ...was performed to investigate effects of chronic tianeptine (5 mg/kg) or olanzapine (2.5 mg/kg) administration on cognitive behaviors of unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS)-exposed mice and to compare these effects to those induced by widely used SSRI antidepressant fluoxetine (15 mg/kg) in mice.
To investigate effects of these drugs, the Morris water maze test (MWM), elevated plus maze test (EPM) and radial arm maze test (RAM) were used. The effects of stress and drugs on gene expression in the hippocampus was determined by quantitative Real Time-PCR.
In MWM test, fluoxetine significantly increased escape latency of non-stressed mice in acquisition sessions and decreased time spent in escape platform quadrant in probe trial; tianeptine and olanzapine decreased enhancement in escape latency, and only olanzapine significantly enhanced attenuation in time spent in the escape platform quadrant in UCMS-exposed mice. In EPM test, all drugs significantly decreased enhancement in transfer latency in UCMS-exposed mice. In RAM test, fluoxetine significantly increased number of errors made by both non-stressed and UCMS-exposed mice.
Quantitative real-time PCR revealed that CREB and BDNF gene expression levels were significantly decreased in UCMS-exposed group, and this effect was significantly reversed by each of drugs tested. Our results seem to be test dependent and should be further investigated using different learning and memory tasks.
This work proposes a new, software-based, defect detection and diagnosis technique. We introduce a novel set of instructions, called access-control extensions (ACE), that can access and control the ...microprocessor's internal state. Special firmware periodically suspends microprocessor execution and uses the ACE instructions to run directed tests on the hardware. When a hardware defect is present, these tests can diagnose and locate it, and then activate system repair through resource reconfiguration. The software nature of our framework makes it flexible: testing techniques can be modified/upgraded in the field to trade-off performance with reliability without requiring any change to the hardware. We describe and evaluate different execution models for using the ACE framework. We also describe how the proposed ACE framework can be extended and utilized to improve the quality of post-silicon debugging and manufacturing testing of modern processors. We evaluated our technique on a commercial chip-multiprocessor based on Sun's Niagara and found that it can provide very high coverage, with 99.22 percent of all silicon defects detected. Moreover, our results show that the average performance overhead of software-based testing is only 5.5 percent. Based on a detailed register transfer level (RTL) implementation of our technique, we find its area and power consumption overheads to be modest, with a 5.8 percent increase in total chip area and a 4 percent increase in the chip's overall power consumption.
Uncontrolled interthread interference in main memory can destroy individual threads' memory-level parallelism, effectively serializing the memory requests of a thread whose latencies would otherwise ...have largely overlapped, thereby reducing single-thread performance. The parallelism-aware batch scheduler preserves each thread's memory-level parallelism, ensures fairness and starvation freedom, and supports system-level thread priorities.
