Graphene-covering is a promising approach for achieving an acid-stable, non-noble-metal-catalysed hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Optimization of the number of graphene-covering layers and the ...density of defects generated by chemical doping is crucial for achieving a balance between corrosion resistance and catalytic activity. Here, we investigate the influence of charge transfer and proton penetration through the graphene layers on the HER mechanisms of the non-noble metals Ni and Cu in an acidic electrolyte. We find that increasing the number of graphene-covering layers significantly alters the HER performances of Ni and Cu. The proton penetration explored through electrochemical experiments and simulations reveals that the HER activity of the graphene-covered catalysts is governed by the degree of proton penetration, as determined by the number of graphene-covering layers.
The sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectrum from the water/1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) interface in the OH stretching mode region of water is simulated and shows three ...spectral peaks which are assigned to different environments. The weak 3590 cm(-1) peak is attributed to a few water molecules coupled to the glycerol backbone of DMCP. The 3470 cm(-1) feature comes from the top water layer adjacent to the hydrophilic headgroup of DMPC. The 3290 cm(-1) peak arises from the near-bulk water nonadjacent to DMPC. The stretching mode corresponding to the 3290 cm(-1) peak is strongly coupled to the neighboring water molecules. In contrast, the 3470 cm(-1) mode is decoupled from the surrounding water molecules, and the orientation of water is governed by DMPC. This decoupling explains the slow relaxation dynamics of water measured in the time-resolved SFG experiment. Despite the similarity of the SFG spectra, the peak origins of water/lipid and water/vapor interfaces are different.
Abstract
Coupling between vibrational modes is essential for energy transfer and dissipation in condensed matter. For water, different O-H stretch modes are known to be very strongly coupled both ...within and between water molecules, leading to ultrafast dissipation and delocalization of vibrational energy. In contrast, the information on the vibrational coupling of the H-O-H bending mode of water is lacking, even though the bending mode is an essential intermediate for the energy relaxation pathway from the stretch mode to the heat bath. By combining static and femtosecond infrared, Raman, and hyper-Raman spectroscopies for isotopically diluted water with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we find the vibrational coupling of the bending mode differs significantly from the stretch mode: the intramode intermolecular coupling of the bending mode is very weak, in stark contrast to the stretch mode. Our results elucidate the vibrational energy transfer pathways of water. Specifically, the librational motion is essential for the vibrational energy relaxation and orientational dynamics of H-O-H bending mode.
Uric acid has both antioxidant and pro-oxidant properties in vitro by scavenging and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This cross-sectional study examined whether uric acid possesses ...effects on oxidative stress under physiological conditions independent of xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR), which is involved in uric acid and ROS production. Serum uric acid level was measured, while plasma XOR activity was determined using our high-sensitive assay in 192 participants (91 males, 101 females) who underwent health examinations and were not taking an antihyperuricemic agent. For antioxidant potential and oxidative stress level, biological antioxidant potential (BAP) and derivative of reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) in serum, respectively, were measured. Median uric acid level and plasma XOR activity were 5.6 mg/dL and 26.1 pmol/h/mL, respectively, and BAP and d-ROMs levels were 2112.8 μmol/L and 305.5 Carr U, respectively. Multivariable regression analyses revealed no significant association of serum uric acid level with BAP level, whereas serum uric acid level showed a significant association with d-ROMs level independent of plasma XOR activity (p = 0.045), which was prominent in females (p = 0.036; p for interaction = 0.148). Uric acid might contribute to increased oxidative stress independent of XOR activity by increasing ROS production, without affecting ROS scavenging, especially in females.
Despite the widespread use of aqueous electrolytes as conductors, the molecular mechanism of ionic conductivity at moderate to high electrolyte concentrations remains largely unresolved. Using a ...combination of dielectric spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations, we show that the absorption of electrolytes at ~0.3 THz sensitively reports on the local environment of ions. The magnitude of these high-frequency ionic motions scales linearly with conductivity for a wide range of ions and concentrations. This scaling is rationalized within a harmonic oscillator model based on the potential of mean force extracted from simulations. Our results thus suggest that long-ranged ionic transport is intimately related to the local energy landscape and to the friction for short-ranged ion dynamics: a high macroscopic electrolyte conductivity is thereby shown to be related to large-amplitude motions at a molecular scale.
The dielectric properties of interfacial water on subnanometer length scales govern chemical reactions, carrier transfer, and ion transport at interfaces. Yet, the nature of the interfacial ...dielectric function has remained under debate as it is challenging to access the interfacial dielectric with subnanometer resolution. Here we use the vibrational response of interfacial water molecules probed using surface-specific sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectra to obtain exquisite depth resolution. Different responses originate from water molecules at different depths and report back on the local interfacial dielectric environment via their spectral amplitudes. From experimental and simulated SFG spectra at the air/water interface, we find that the interfacial dielectric constant changes drastically across an ∼1 Å thin interfacial water region. The strong gradient of the interfacial dielectric constant leads, at charged planar interfaces, to the formation of an electric triple layer that goes beyond the standard double-layer model.
