Correctional facilities house millions of residents in communities throughout the United States. Such congregate settings are critical for national infection prevention and control (IPC) efforts. ...Carceral settings can be sites where infectious diseases are detected in patient populations who may not otherwise have access to health care services, and as highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, where outbreaks of infectious diseases may result in spread to residents, correctional staff, and the community at large. Correctional IPC, while sharing commonalities with IPC in other settings, is unique programmatically and operationally. In this article, we identify common challenges with correctional IPC program implementation and recommend action steps for advancing correctional IPC as a national public health priority.
Objectives
Infanticide by males is common in mammals. According to the sexual selection hypothesis, the risk is inversely related to infant age because the older the infant, the less infanticide can ...shorten lactational amenorrhea; risk is also predicted to increase when an infanticidal male's chance of siring the replacement infant is high. Infanticide occurs in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), a species in which male dominance rank predicts paternity skew. Infanticidal male chimpanzees (if low‐ranking) are unlikely to kill their own offspring, whereas those who are currently rising in rank, particularly when this rise is dramatic, have an increased likelihood of fathering potential future infants relative to any existing ones. Given that mothers should behave in ways that reduce infanticide risk, we predicted that female chimpanzees, and specifically those with younger, more vulnerable infants, would attempt to adjust the exposure of their infants to potentially infanticidal males. Specifically, mothers of young infants should reduce their association with adult males in general, and to a greater extent, with both low‐ranking males and those rising in rank from a position where paternity of current infants was unlikely, to a rank where the probability of siring the next infant is significantly higher. We also investigated the alternative possibility that rather than avoiding all adult males, mothers would increase association with males of stable high rank on the basis that such males could offer protection against infanticide.
Materials and methods
We examined data on female association patterns collected from the Budongo Forest, Uganda, during a period encompassing both relative stability in the male hierarchy and a period of instability with a mid‐ranking male rising rapidly in rank.
Results
Using linear mixed models, we found that mothers reduced their association with the rank‐rising male, contingent on infant age, during the period of instability. We also found evidence that females preferentially associated with a potential protector male during the high‐risk period.
Discussion
Our results support the sexually selected hypothesis for infanticide and demonstrate that female chimpanzees are sensitive to the relative risks posed by adult males.
Gut microbiota is key to the development and modulation of the mucosal immune system. It plays a central role in several physiological functions, in the modulation of inflammatory signaling and in ...the protection against infections. In healthy states, there is a perfect balance between commensal and pathogens, and microbiota and the immune system interact to maintain gut homeostasis. The alteration of such balance, called dysbiosis, determines an intestinal bacterial overgrowth which leads to the disruption of the intestinal barrier with systemic translocation of pathogens. The pancreas does not possess its own microbiota, and it is believed that inflammatory and neoplastic processes affecting the gland may be linked to intestinal dysbiosis. Increasing research evidence testifies a correlation between intestinal dysbiosis and various pancreatic disorders, but it remains unclear whether dysbiosis is the cause or an effect. The analysis of specific alterations in the microbiome profile may permit to develop novel tools for the early detection of several pancreatic disorders, utilizing samples, such as blood, saliva, and stools. Future studies will have to elucidate the mechanisms by which gut microbiota is modulated and how it tunes the immune system, in order to be able to develop innovative treatment strategies for pancreatic disorders.
Long tracts of consecutive homozygous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) can arise in the genome through a number of mechanisms. These include inbreeding in which an individual inherits ...chromosomal segments that are identical by descent from each parent. However, recombination and other processes break up chromosomal segments over generations. The longest tracts are therefore to be expected in populations with an appreciable degree of inbreeding. We examined the length, number and distribution of long tracts of homozygosity in the apparently outbred HapMap populations. We observed 1393 tracts exceeding 1 Mb in length among the 209 unrelated HapMap individuals. The longest was an uninterrupted run of 3922 homozygous SNPs spanning 17.9 Mb in a Japanese individual. We find that homozygous tracts are significantly more common in regions with high linkage disequilibrium and low recombination, and the location of tracts is similar across all populations. The Yoruba sample has the fewest long tracts per individual, consistent with a larger number of generations (and hence amount of recombination) since the founding of that population. Our results suggest that multiple-megabase-scale ancestral haplotypes persist in outbred human populations in broad genomic regions which have lower than average recombination rates. We observed three outlying individuals who have exceptionally long and numerous homozygous tracts that are not associated with recombination suppressed areas of the genome. We consider that this reflects a high level of relatedness in their ancestry which is too recent to have been influenced by the local recombination intensity. Possible alternative mechanisms and the implications of long homozygous tracts in the genome are discussed.
Understanding pollinator networks requires species level data on pollinators. New photographic approaches to identification provide avenues to data collection that reduce impacts on declining ...bumblebee species, but limited research has addressed their accuracy. Using blind identification of 1418 photographed bees, of which 561 had paired specimens, we assessed identification and agreement across 20 bumblebee species netted in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota by people with minimal training. An expert identified 92.4% of bees from photographs, whereas 98.2% of bees were identified from specimens. Photograph identifiability decreased for bees that were wet or matted; bees without clear pictures of the abdomen, side of thorax, or top of thorax; bees photographed with a tablet, and for species with more color morphs. Across paired specimens, the identification matched for 95.1% of bees. When combined with a second opinion of specimens without matching identifications, data suggested a similar misidentification rate (2.7% for photographs and 2.5% specimens). We suggest approaches to maximize accuracy, including development of rulesets for collection of a subset of specimens based on difficulty of identification and to address cryptic variation, and focused training on identification that highlights detection of species of concern and species frequently confused in a study area.
High pressure high temperature (HPHT) synthesis of crystallographically well-defined boron doped diamond (BDD) microparticles, suitable for electrochemical applications and using the lowest P and T ...(5.5 GPa and 1200 °C) growth conditions to date, is reported. This is aided through the use of a metal (Fe–Ni) carbide forming catalyst and an aluminum diboride (AlB2) boron source. The latter also acts as a nitrogen sequester, to reduce boron-nitrogen charge compensation effects. Raman microscopy and electrochemical measurements on individual microparticles reveal they are doped to metal-like levels, contain negligible sp2 bonded carbon and display a large aqueous solvent window. A HPHT compaction process is used to create macroscopic porous electrodes from the BDD microparticles. Voltammetric analysis of the one-electron reduction of Ru(NH3)63+ is used to identify the fundamental electrochemical response of the porous material, revealing large capacitive and resistive components to the current-voltage curves, originating from solution trapped within the pores. Scanning electrochemical cell microscopy is employed to map the local electrochemical activity and porosity at the micron scale. Such electrodes are of interest for applications which require the electrochemical and mechanical robustness properties of BDD, e.g. when operating under high applied potentials/currents, but with the additional benefits of a large, electrochemically accessible, surface area.

ABSTRACT
M dwarf stars are high-priority targets for searches for Earth-size and potentially Earth-like planets, but their planetary systems may form and evolve in very different circumstellar ...environments than those of solar-type stars. To explore the evolution of these systems, we obtained transit spectroscopy and photometry of the Neptune-size planet orbiting the ≈650-Myr-old Hyades M dwarf K2-25. An analysis of the variation in spectral line shape induced by the Doppler ‘shadow’ of the planet indicates that the planet’s orbit is closely aligned with the stellar equator ($\lambda =-1.7_{-3.7}^{+5.8}$ deg), and that an eccentric orbit found by previous work could arise from perturbations by another planet on a coplanar orbit. We detect no significant variation in the depth of the He i line at 1083 nm during transit. A model of atmospheric escape as an isothermal Parker wind with a solar composition shows that this non-detection is not constraining compared to escape rate predictions of ∼0.1 M⊕ Gyr−1; at such rates, at least several Gyr are required for a Neptune-like planet to evolve into a rocky super-Earth.
