La gestion des déchets est aujourd’hui un enjeu primordial. Faire face à leur croissance très rapide depuis les années 2000 et à la saturation des décharges demande un véritable plan de collecte et ...de gestion. À Hà Nội, l’absence de tri et de recyclage par les opérateurs officiels, publics ou privés, et la croissance de la consommation d’une classe moyenne en augmentation font que la ville-capitale est dépassée par la quantité de déchets à ramasser. Ni la municipalité ni le secteur privé ne parviennent à mettre en place un système de tri à la source ou après ramassage, et à recycler les déchets. Pourtant, un système très innovant de collecte sélective et de recyclage des déchets (plastique, métaux, papier et cartons) est organisé depuis plusieurs décennies par des individus, en majorité des femmes d’origine rurale, qui collectent environ 20 % des déchets de la ville. Non reconnues par les autorités mais tolérées, ces entreprises familiales et informelles (pour la plupart) exercent leur activité dans les interstices de la loi et créent de nombreux emplois. À partir d’un riche corpus de cartes et d’études de terrain, les auteurs s’interrogent sur l’organisation de ce système informel et sur son maintien dans un territoire urbain très disputé, ainsi que sur les stratégies – très polluantes pour l’environnement et la santé – mises en oeuvre par ces collecteurs et recycleurs dans cette capitale en pleine expansion. Ils mettent en lumière la complexité du système et les multiples tensions entre les acteurs au sein des territoires, ainsi que les contradictions entre les logiques économiques du marché et des autorités publiques, dans un contexte de concurrence sur les matériaux recyclables au niveau local comme international. De très belles photos et des témoignages montrent également la vie au quotidien de ces collecteurs-recycleurs. Ce livre s’adresse à tout public intéressé par cette question majeure pour des villes durables.
Xuyên tâm liên (Andrographis paniculata) là cây có nhiều công dụng và là nguồn dược liệu tốt. Mối tương tác giữa hệ vi sinh vật và A. paniculata ở các mức độ khác nhau đã được khảo sát. Ba địa điểm ...nghiên cứu được chọn để phân tích đất, phân lập vi khuẩn, thu mẫu cây để xác định cấu trúc mô và vị trí cư trú của vi sinh vật. Kết quả cho thấy A. paniculata có khả năng thích nghi với nhiều loại đất. Năm mươi lăm dòng vi khuẩn đã được tìm thấy, trong đó số lượng vi khuẩn phân lập đất vùng rễ là cao nhất 18 dòng. Tại địa điểm đất có hàm lượng chất hữu cơ cao nhất (12,8 %) phân lập được nhiều vi khuẩn nhất (8 dòng) ngược lại tại nơi có hàm lượng chất hữu cơ thấp nhất (1,41 %) số lượng vi sinh vật phân lập được ít nhất (4 dòng). Các bộ phận trong cây đều phân lập được các vi sinh vật với số lượng khác nhau. Các mô với tế bào có vách bằng cellulose, nhiều chất dự trữ đều có vi sinh vật cộng sinh.
Lần đầu tiên, đất sét bentonite có nguồn gốc Việt Nam, từ mỏ Kiện Khê, Hà Nam được khảo sát và tinh chế nhằm đạt tiêu chuẩn USP (Mỹ) như một nguyên liệu trong sản xuất mỹ ...phẩm. Đất sét thô được xử lý sơ bộ, sau đó tinh chế bằng lắng và ly tâm 300 vòng/phút. Đất sét mịn được thu bằng ly tâm 4.000 vòng/phút trong 25 phút, và được khử khuẩn ở 1210C trong 30 phút. Thành phần hóa học gồm SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 lần lượt chiếm 53,82%; 12,69% và 23,25% và không chứa kim loại nặng như chì và asen. Ảnh chụp kính hiển vi điện tử quét và kết quả phân tích kích thước hạt cho thấy bentonite có kích thước nhỏ và đồng đều hơn sau khi tinh chế, với kích thước hạt trung bình 0,469 µm. Đất sét sau khi biến tính với NaOH đạt giá trị pH trong khoảng 9,0-9,6. Vi sinh vật cũng không tìm thấy sau khi khử nhiễm. Với những kết quả này, bentonite Kiện Khê, Hà Nam sau tinh chế đã đạt tiêu chuẩn USP để có thể sử dụng như một nguyên liệu trong mỹ phẩm.
Vibrio spp. là nguyên nhân gây ra các bệnh vi khuẩn trên thủy sản nói chung và tôm nói riêng. Phương pháp điều trị bằng kháng sinh đã tạo ra các chủng vi sinh vật đa kháng thuốc. Mục đích của nghiên ...cứu này là đánh giá ảnh hưởng của cao chiết và cao chiết kết hợp thực khuẩn thể đối với các dòng Vibrio spp. Nghiên cứu được thực hiện theo hai phương pháp là khuếch tán qua đĩa thạch và trải đếm so sánh mật số vi khuẩn. Kết quả cho thấy, ở thí nghiệm khuếch tán qua đĩa thạch, hầu hết cao chiết và cao chiết kết hợp thực khuẩn thể đều tạo vòng ức chế, khác biệt có ý nghĩa thống kê so với đối chứng tetracycline 5 mg/mL. Kết quả trải đếm cho thấy hầu hết các loại thực khuẩn thể và cao chiết đều làm giảm mật số vi khuẩn. Tuy nhiên, cao chiết lựu, cao chiết đầu lân và ɸTT1H, ɸTT2H làm thay đổi mật số không có ý nghĩa thống kê (p<0,05).
Background
Ocular inflammatory diseases, including scleritis and uveitis, have been widely treated with immunomodulatory therapies (IMTs) as a steroid-sparing approach. Such strategy includes ...conventional therapies (antimetabolites, alkylating agents, and calcineurin inhibitors) as well as biologic agents like adalimumab, infliximab, rituximab, and tocilizumab. Cyclophosphamide (CP) is an alkylating agent and mainly inhibits the functioning of both T and B cells. Though known to have potential adverse events, including bone marrow suppression, hemorrhagic cystitis, and sterility, CP has been shown to be efficacious, especially in recalcitrant cases and when used intravenous (IV) for a limited period.
Main findings
We conducted a retrospective case-series to assess the safety and efficacy of CP therapy for patients with severe ocular inflammatory diseases who failed other IMTs. Medical records of 1295 patients who presented to the Uveitis Clinic at the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford between 2017 and 2022 were reviewed. Seven patients (10 eyes) who received CP therapy for ocular inflammatory diseases with at least one year of follow-up were included. The mean age of the patients (4 males, 3 females) was 61.6 ± 14.9 (43.0–89.0) years. Clinical diagnoses included necrotizing scleritis (5 eyes), peripheral ulcerative keratitis (2 eyes), orbital pseudotumor (1 eye), HLA-B27 associated panuveitis and retinal vasculitis (2 eyes). Ocular disease was idiopathic in 3 patients, and was associated with rheumatoid arthritis, IgG-4 sclerosing disease, dermatomyositis, and ankylosing spondylitis in 1 patient each. All the patients had history of previous IMT use including methotrexate (5), mycophenolate mofetil (3), azathioprine (1), tacrolimus (1), adalimumab (2), infliximab (4), and rituximab (1). The mean follow-up time was 34.4 ± 11.0 (13–45) months, and mean duration of CP therapy was 11.9 ± 8.8 (5–28) months. Remission was achieved in 5 patients (71.4%). Four patients (57.1%) experienced transient leukopenia (white blood cell count < 4000/mL).
Short conclusion
CP therapy can be considered a potentially effective and relatively safe therapeutic option for patients with severe ocular inflammatory diseases who failed other IMTs including biologics (TNFa and CD20 inhibitors).
Salivary urea was reported to be a useful biomarker to reflect the blood urea nitrogen in chronic kidney disease patients. However, as a new biomarker, enormous clinical trials are required to define ...the intended-use and to verify the specification. In this report, we demonstrated a low-cost easy-operated real-time sensing system (optical fiber-urea-sensing, OFUS, system) to detect salivary urea. We aim to make the system easily reproduced by the community to stimulate abundant clinical tests worldwide. The OFUS system is composed of a simple three-dimensional printed tank to link with two optical fibers, one connecting with a commercial light-emitting diode to deliver the input light signal, the other connecting with a commercial cadmium sulfide photo-conductive cell to detect the sensing signal. To allow on-site detection without any sample pretreatment, only 1 μl saliva is needed to be mixed with 10 μl urease solution and 90 μl pH indicator solution in the reaction tank and the detection time is only 20 s. A stable and reproducible calibration curve can be easily built with a detection range as 24–300 mg/dL. The OFUS system successfully detected saliva with added synthetic urea and samples from chronic kidney disease patients. A good agreement between the OFUS system and the commercial kit was obtained. A good correlation between salivary urea and the blood urea nitrogen was also confirmed.

This study examined the enhancement of the single mixed refrigerant (SMR) natural gas liquefaction process. The effects of the main parameters, such as mixed refrigerant (MR) composition and operating pressures on the compression energy requirement were investigated. A process knowledge inspired decision-making method was exploited for liquefied natural gas process optimization. The results showed that the proposed optimization methodology is simple and effective in determining the optimal operating conditions and could save up to 30.6% in terms of the compressor duty compared to the base case. In addition, the proposed optimization methodology provides process understanding, which is essential to process engineers. Another benefit of the proposed methodology is that it can be applied to any MR liquefaction cycle. The use of heavier refrigerants, such as isobutane and isopentane, and the addition of a NG compressor were examined to improve the energy efficiency of the SMR process. The effect of the intercooler outlet temperature on energy saving was also considered. The synergistic effects of those modifications on improving the performance of the liquefaction process were investigated.

In recent years, human activity recognition (HAR) has gained significant interest from researchers in the sports and fitness industries. In this study, the authors have proposed a cascaded method ...including two classifying stages to classify fitness exercises, utilizing a decision tree as the first stage and a one-dimension convolutional neural network as the second stage. The data acquisition was carried out by five participants performing exercises while wearing an inertial measurement unit sensor attached to a wristband on their wrists. However, only data acquired along the
-axis of the IMU accelerator was used as input to train and test the proposed model, to simplify the model and optimize the training time while still achieving good performance. To examine the efficiency of the proposed method, the authors compared the performance of the cascaded model and the conventional 1D-CNN model. The obtained results showed an overall improvement in the accuracy of exercise classification by the proposed model, which was approximately 92%, compared to 82.4% for the 1D-CNN model. In addition, the authors suggested and evaluated two methods to optimize the clustering outcome of the first stage in the cascaded model. This research demonstrates that the proposed model, with advantages in terms of training time and computational cost, is able to classify fitness workouts with high performance. Therefore, with further development, it can be applied in various real-time HAR applications.
