Food is an excellent medium through which to explore trade, economies, migration and landscapes, yet little is known about food production and consumption in the Roman province of Pannonia. Here we ...explore the current evidence for agriculture, trade and diet in southern Pannonia (modern day eastern Croatia) and what this may say about life in the region. The influx of new ‘exotic’ foods and technologies had a profound influence on this region. The limited archaeobotanical data suggests complex trade and local agricultural systems that allowed large towns such as
,
and
to gain access to a wide range of food items. The large quantities of pottery found not only helps us understand traded goods but also the local tastes and fashions, as well as to infer the types of dishes that could have been cooked. More evidence is clearly needed in this region but what we can see so far is that urban centres along the Danube
were firmly integrated within the wider Roman food system and that diets were probably quite varied for many who lived there.
Among the multitude of ceramic fragments, there occasionally
appear handles of unusual shapes, or the remains of large
dome-shaped lids. Such vessels were used for food preparation
in kitchens with ...open hearths. Ever since prehistory, they have
represented a kitchen appliance in daily use to the present day,
and they appear in Roman kitchens as well. Various sources refer
to this method of food preparation as sub testu. These vessels’
segments have also been archaeologically confirmed on Roman
sites in Pannonia Inferior and Moesia Superior. There is a type of
dish called patina in Roman cuisine, similar to modern-day souffle,
which was presumably prepared on plates with a flat bottom
and curved, convex, or concave walls.
The Virovitica Kiskorija South site was a Roman village. In this paper archaeological, archaeobotanical, and archaeo-zoological finds are presented and interpreted, then compared with similar sites ...and information available from ancient sources. The site was divided into complexes that made a whole. The finds within each complex are presented and compared to similar archaeological sites, as well as data from ancient written sources. The goal of the paper is to determine which kind of diet was present at this Roman village in Pannonia, and to analyze the differences and similarities between this village and analogous sites.

Minor rescue archaeological excavations were conducted in 1990 in the area of the town of Vinkovci, on the position Šokadija, a part of an ancient residential building where a heating system was discovered. Detailed processing of the archaeological material found in this building revealed, among other finds, several fragments of hollow short ceramic cones of coarser quality. These objects are related to the elements of a specific way of construction of the wall part of the hypocaust, i.e. wall heating. Namely, there are several fragments of objects called clavi coctiles, which in Croatian literature are described as lesser-known types of ceramic spacers, used in thermal complexes throughout the Roman Empire.
In July 2020, the Living Danube Limes project began, in which the Institute of Archeology participates as a project partner in a consortium consisting of 19 project partners from 10 European ...countries. The main goal of the project is to connect the entire Danube region through its common Roman heritage, the Danube Limes. The project will cover 8 pilot locations, one of which will be in Croatia. A number of activities regarding the interpretation, presentation, and popularization of the archeological heritage related to the Roman Danube Limes will be carried out at these locations. As the main connecting factor, the project plans to build a replica of a Roman ship of the Mainz - Lusoria type. This ship will sail on the Danube and physically connect the mentioned pilot locations upon completion of the project.

Numerous accidental finds in the vicinity of the town of Bjelovar, and also in the area of the town itself, indicated the existence of Roman archaeological sites. The confirmation for this arrived in ...the form of rescue archaeological research during the construction of the eastern bypass road around the city of Bjelovar in 2017, when the site was discovered at the position called Lug. It was ascertained that this is a larger roman rural settlement, which according to the findings, dates between the 1st and 4th century AD.

Donji Miholjac is often mentioned in the context of the site of mansio Maurianis, in accordance with Itinerarium Burdigalense. Several sites from the Roman period were ascertained on the territory of ...Donji Miholjac Municipality. This paper presents sites from the Roman period known from the literature, as well as two new sites as a result of a field survey in Rakitovica area, south of Donji Miholjac. Two sites from the Roman period which are dated by the finds to the second half of the second century and the third century were discovered at elevated positions of the meandering river of Karašica.
