In this study the impregnation of Lactobacillus rhamnosus in banana slices and the storage stability of the dehydrated product were analyzed. Banana slices were enriched with L. rhamnosus at levels ...of 109 CFU/g d.b. using a hypertonic solution of 50% (w/w) sucrose. The high level of probiotic impregnation occurred at high rates of mass transfer during the first 200 min of osmotic process. Since dehydration is widely used for the preservation of fruits this work analyzed the stability of probiotics impregnated in the freeze-dried banana and its relation with the thermodynamic properties of the adsorbed water. The survival kinetics showed that the viability of probiotics decrease more rapidly over water activity of 0.327, which was considered as critical for maintaining these alive. This water activity could be obtained using the minimum integral entropy of the adsorbed water at the freeze-dried banana surface. These results have shown that is possible to obtain dried fruits enriched with probiotics with good storage stability and that the thermodynamic approach is a useful tool to establish the optimal conditions of water activity to preserve the dehydrated product.

The anesthetic-surgical stress response consists of metabolic, neuroendocrine, hemodynamic, immunological, and behavioral adaptations through chemical mediators such as the adrenocorticotropic ...hormone, growth hormone, antidiuretic hormone, cortisol, aldosterone, angiotensin II, thyroid-stimulating hormone, thyroxine, triiodothyronine, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, catecholamines, insulin, interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and prostaglandin E-2. Behavioral changes include adopting the so-called prayer posture, altered facial expressions, hyporexia or anorexia, drowsiness, sleep disorders, restriction of movement, licking or biting the injured area, and vocalizations. Overall, these changes are essential mechanisms to counteract harmful stimuli. However, if uncontrolled surgical stress persists, recovery time may be prolonged, along with increased susceptibility to infections in the post-operative period. This review discusses the neurobiology and most relevant organic responses to pain and anesthetic-surgical stress in dogs and cats. It highlights the role of stress biomarkers and their influence on autonomous and demeanor aspects and emphasizes the importance of understanding and correlating all factors to provide a more accurate assessment of pain and animal welfare in dogs and cats throughout the surgical process.
Background. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease. Low vitamin D levels have been reported to be a risk factor for MS, and genetic variances could be implicated. The ...aim of this study was to evaluate the association of MS with rs10766197 polymorphism of CYP2R1 gene and rs10877012 polymorphism of CYP27B1 gene. The second aim was to analyse whether these polymorphisms are associated with the severity of the progression of MS. Material and Methods. In a case-control study, we included 116 MS patients and 226 controls, all of whom were Mexican Mestizo. MS was diagnosed by McDonald criteria (2017). A complete neurological evaluation was performed to evaluate the severity of disease progression. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D 25(OH) vitamin D levels were measured by ELISA. Single nucleotide polymorphisms rs10766197 of CYP2R1 gene and rs10877012 SNP of CYP27B1 gene were genotyped by real-time PCR. Results. Serum 25(OH) vitamin D levels were lower in MS patients than in controls (p=0.009). No differences were observed between serum 25(OH) vitamin D levels of MS patients with severe progression compared to low progression (p=0.88). A higher frequency of the A allele of CYP2R1 rs10766197 was observed between MS patients and controls (p=0.05). No differences were observed in the frequency of T allele of CYP27B1 rs10877012 (p=0.65). In subanalysis, patients with GA+AA genotypes of CYP2R1 rs10766197 had an increased risk of MS compared to controls (p=0.03). No increased risk was observed in GT+TT genotypes of CYP27B1 rs10877012 (p=0.63). No differences were observed in allele frequencies of either polymorphism between patients with severe vs. low disease progression. Conclusion. Lower serum 25(OH) vitamin D levels were observed in MS patients than in controls, although these levels were not associated with disease progression. Carriers of GA+AA genotypes of CYP2R1 rs10766197 had an increased risk of MS. None of these polymorphisms was associated with severe progression of MS.

HNMR spectra confirmed the successful synthesis of the copolymer that formed nanoparticles. AFM images and FE-SEM micrographs showed that nanoparticles were spherical, but their round-shape was slightly compromised with MAA content; besides, the size of particles tends to decrease as MAA content increased. The hydrogels nanoparticles also exhibited an interesting pH-sensitivity, displaying changes in its particle size when changes in pH media occurred. Biological characterization results indicate that all the synthesized particles are non-cytotoxic to endothelial cells and hemocompatible, although an increase of MAA content leads to a slight increase in the hemolysis percentage. Therefore, the pH-sensitivity hydrogels may serve as a versatile platform as self-regulated drug delivery systems in response to environmental pH changes.
The etiology of preeclampsia is still a matter of controversy. An association between hyperhomocysteinemia and preeclamptic patients has been described. A common missense mutation in the ...methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene is associated with increased plasma homocysteine concentrations. In addition, the polymorphism of gene encoding for Factor V Leiden G1691A is associated with a prothrombotic state in heterozygous subjects. Both mutations in these thrombophilic proteins appear to have different prevalence in the general population and in patients with preeclampsia/eclampsia (PE/E). We studied single nucleotide polymorphisms for MTHFR C677T and coagulation Factor V Leiden in 33 Mexican patients with PE/E as a genetic risk factor for these diseases, comparing with a normotensive pregnant control group. The genotype and allele frequencies of MTHFR C677T and Factor V Leiden mutations between Mexican women with PE/E and healthy controls were not different. We conclude that these polymorphisms do not contribute in the etiology of PE/E as it has been reported in other populations.
Hurricanes are extreme climatic events frequently affecting tropical regions such as the tropical dry forests (TDFs) in Mexico, where its frequency/intensity is expected to increase toward the year ...2100. To answer how resistant is a Mexican tropical dry forest to a high-intensity hurricane, and if its degree of resistance was mediated by its conservation degree, we evaluated the effect of a category 4 hurricane over the tree community, soil nutrients, and soil enzymatic activity in two contrasting TDF ecosystems: Old-Growth Forest (OGF) and Secondary Forest (SF). In general, vegetation richness and diversity showed very high resistance one year after the hurricane, but several structural attributes did not, especially in the OGF where the tree mortality related to vegetation structure and spatial distribution of individuals was higher. Then, in the short term, SF vegetation appeared to be more resistant, whereas the OGF, with more biomass to lose, appeared to be more vulnerable. Conversely, most soil attributes showed low resistance in both stages, but especially in SF which could face more severe nutrient limitations. The response of TDF to high-intensity hurricanes, in terms of above- and belowground processes, was in part dependent on its disturbance level. Moreover, an increase in the intensity/frequency of hurricanes could lead this TDF toward a high nutrient limitation (especially by phosphorus) for the plants and consequently toward a loss of soil functioning, especially in the SF. This eventually could produce a severe degradation in fundamental attributes and functions of the ecosystem.
Hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) mediate the transcriptional adaptation of hypoxic cells. The extensive transcriptional programm regulated by HIFs involves the induction of genes controlling ...angiogenesis, cellular metabolism, cell growth, metastasis, apoptosis, extracellular matrix remodeling and others. HIF is a heterodimer of HIF-α and HIF-β subunits. In addition to HIF-1α, HIF-2α has evolved as an isoform that contributes differently to the hypoxic adaptation by performing non-redundant functions. Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) is a nuclear protein involved in the control of DNA repair and gene transcription by modulating chromatin structure and acting as part of gene-specific enhancer/promoter-binding complexes. Previous results have shown that PARP-1 regulates HIF-1 activity. In this study, we focused on the cross-talk between HIF-2α and PARP-1. By using different approaches to suppress PARP-1, we show that HIF-2α mRNA expression, protein levels and HIF-2-dependent gene expression, such as ANGPTL4 and erythropoietin (EPO), are regulated by PARP-1. This regulation occurs at both the transcriptional and post-trancriptional level. We also show a complex formation between HIF-2α with PARP-1. This complex is sensitive to PARP inhibition and seems to protect against the von Hippel-Lindau-dependent HIF-2α degradation. Finally, we show that parp-1(-/-) mice display a significant reduction in the circulating hypoxia-induced EPO levels, number of red cells and hemoglobin concentration. Altogether, these results reveal a complex functional interaction between PARP-1 and the HIF system and suggest that PARP-1 is involved in the fine tuning of the HIF-mediated hypoxic response in vivo.
In the Southern Ocean, many parasites of vertebrates (mainly helminth groups) have been recognized as endemic species, but parasites of marine invertebrates remain almost unknown. It is reasonable to ...assume that digenean larvae will parasitize gastropods, bivalves, amphipods, and annelids, the usual first and second intermediate hosts for those parasites. Here, using an identification assisted by molecular markers, we report the Digenea species parasitizing the most abundant limpet species inhabiting ice-free rocky intertidal and subtidal zones of the Southern Ocean, viz.
Nacella concinna
from the Antarctic and
Nacella deaurata
from the Magellan region. The limpets harbored larval Digenea (two metacercariae and one sporocyst). Phylogenetic analysis based on the multilocus tree supported the hypothesis that
N. concinna
is parasitized by a species of Gymnophallidae, whereas the limpet
N. deaurata
is parasitized by
Gymnophalloides nacellae
and a species of Renicolidae. In addition, differences in prevalence and intensity were also recorded between the two compared host species and also from other congeneric species. This new knowledge in parasite species in marine invertebrates from the Southern Ocean reveals the presence of a particular parasite fauna and confirms the utility of molecular tools to identify biodiversity still scarcely known.
