Abstract
We present a catalog of central engine properties, i.e., black hole mass (
M
BH
) and accretion luminosity (
L
disk
), for a sample of 1077 blazars detected with the Fermi Large Area ...Telescope. This includes broad emission-line systems and blazars whose optical spectra lack emission lines but are dominated by the absorption features arising from the host galaxy. The average
M
BH
for the sample is
, and there is evidence suggesting the association of more massive black holes with absorption-line systems. Our results indicate a bimodality of
L
disk
in Eddington units (
L
disk
/
L
Edd
) with broad-line objects tend to have a higher accretion rate (
L
disk
/
L
Edd
> 0.01). We have found that
L
disk
/
L
Edd
and Compton dominance (CD; the ratio of the inverse Compton to synchrotron peak luminosities) are positively correlated at the >5
σ
confidence level, suggesting that the latter can be used to reveal the state of accretion in blazars. Based on this result, we propose a CD-based classification scheme. Sources with CD > 1 can be classified as high-Compton-dominated or HCD blazars, whereas those with CD ≲ 1 are low-Compton-dominated (LCD) objects. This scheme is analogous to that based on the mass accretion rate proposed in the literature; however, it overcomes the limitation imposed by the difficulty in measuring
L
disk
and
M
BH
for objects with quasi-featureless spectra. We conclude that the overall physical properties of Fermi blazars are likely to be controlled by the accretion rate in Eddington units. The catalog is made public at

The Spanish health system is made up of seventeen regional health systems. Through the official reporting systems, some inconsistencies and differences in case fatality rates between Autonomous ...Communities (CC.AA.) have been observed. Therefore the objective of this paper is to compare COVID-19 case fatality rates across the Spanish CC.AA.
Observational descriptive study. The COVID-19 case fatality rate (CFR) was estimated according to the official records (CFR-PCR+), the daily mortality monitory system (MoMo) record (CFR-Mo), and the seroprevalence study ENE-COVID-19 (Estudio Nacional de sero Epidemiologia Covid-19) according to sex, age group and CC.AA. between March and June 2020. The main objective is to detect whether there are any differences in CFR between Spanish Regions using two different register systems, i. e., the official register of the Ministry of Health and the MoMo.
Overall, the CFR-Mo was higher than the CFR-PCR+, 1.59% vs 0.98%. The differences in case fatality rate between both methods were significantly higher in Castilla La Mancha, Castilla y León, Cataluña, and Madrid. The difference between both methods was higher in persons over 74 years of age (CFR-PCR+ 7.5% vs 13.0% for the CFR-Mo) but without statistical significance. There was no correlation of the estimated prevalence of infection with CFR-PCR+, but there was with CFR-Mo (R2 = 0.33). Andalucía presented a SCFR below 1 with both methods, and Asturias had a SCFR higher than 1. Cataluña and Castilla La Mancha presented a SCFR greater than 1 in any scenario of SARS-CoV-2 infection calculated with SCFR-Mo.
The PCR+ case fatality rate underestimates the case fatality rate of the SARS-CoV- 2 virus pandemic. It is therefore preferable to consider the MoMo case fatality rate. Significant differences have been observed in the information and registration systems and in the severity of the pandemic between the Spanish CC.AA. Although the infection prevalence correlates with case fatality rate, other factors such as age, comorbidities, and the policies adopted to address the pandemic can explain the differences observed between CC.AA.
Context. The most highly accreting quasars are of special interest in studies of the physics of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and host galaxy evolution. Quasars accreting at high rates (L/LEdd ∼ 1) ...hold promise for use as “standard candles”: distance indicators detectable at very high redshift. However, their observational properties are still largely unknown. Aims. We seek to identify a significant number of extreme accretors. A large sample can clarify the main properties of quasars radiating near L/LEdd ∼ 1 (in this paper they are designated as extreme Population A quasars or simply as extreme accretors) in the Hβ spectral range for redshift ≲0.8. Methods. We use selection criteria derived from four-dimensional Eigenvector 1 (4DE1) studies to identify and analyze spectra for a sample of 334 candidate sources identified from the SDSS DR7 database. The source spectra were chosen to show a ratio RFeII between the FeII emission blend at λ4570 and Hβ, RFeII > 1. Composite spectra were analyzed for systematic trends as a function of Fe II strength, line width, and OIII strength. We introduced tighter constraints on the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) and RFeII values that allowed us to isolate sources most likely to be extreme accretors. Results. We provide a database of detailed measurements. Analysis of the data allows us to confirm that Hβ shows a Lorentzian function with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of Hβ ≤ 4000 km s−1. We find no evidence for a discontinuity at 2000 km s−1 in the 4DE1, which could mean that the sources below this FWHM value do not belong to a different AGN class. Systematic OIII blue shifts, as well as a blueshifted component in Hβ are revealed. We interpret the blueshifts as related to the signature of outflowing gas from the quasar central engine. The FWHM of Hβ is still affected by the blueshifted emission; however, the effect is non-negligible if the FWHM Hβ is used as a “virial broadening estimator” (VBE). We emphasize a strong effect of the viewing angle on Hβ broadening, deriving a correction for those sources that shows major disagreement between virial and concordance cosmology luminosity values. Conclusions. The relatively large scatter between concordance cosmology and virial luminosity estimates can be reduced (by an order of magnitude) if a correction for orientation effects is included in the FWHM Hβ value; outflow and sample definition yield relatively minor effects.
The recent spatial and temporal coincidence of the blazar TXS 0506+056 with the IceCube-detected neutrino event IC-170922A has opened up a realm of multimessenger astronomy with blazar jets as a ...plausible site of cosmic-ray acceleration. After TXS 0506+056, a second blazar, BZB J0955+3551, was recently found to be spatially coincident with the IceCube-detected neutrino event IC-200107A and undergoing its brightest X-ray flare measured so far. Here we present the results of our multifrequency campaign to study this peculiar event that includes observations with the NuSTAR, Swift, Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), and 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). The optical spectroscopic observation from GTC secured its redshift as and the central black hole mass as . Both NuSTAR and NICER data reveal a rapid flux variability, albeit at low significance ( ). We explore the origin of the target photon field needed for the photopion production using analytical calculations and considering the observed optical-to-X-ray flux level. We conclude that seed photons may originate from outside the jet, similar to that reported for TXS 0506+056, although a scenario invoking a comoving target photon field (e.g., electron synchrotron) cannot be ruled out. The electromagnetic output from the neutrino-producing photohadronic processes are likely to make only a subdominant contribution to the observed spectral energy distribution, suggesting that the X-ray flaring event may not be directly connected with IC-200107A.
We present the first GPS‐derived geodetic observations from the NE end of the Eastern Betic Shear Zone obtained from the Bajo Segura GPS network (SE Spain). The network has 11 GPS sites and was ...sampled four times between 1999 and 2013. Despite the low signal‐to‐noise ratio of the residual velocities obtained, the velocities are nonzero at 95% confidence level. We postulate that the GPS data point to the partitioning of deformation into the NNW–SSE shortening and a N70E left‐lateral component. The maximum deformation rates are located along the two main active faults in the study area. The maximum shortening rates (north component) in the southern region of the Bajo Segura Basin vary from west to east, ranging from 0.2 to 0.7 mm/year along the Bajo Segura Fault Zone. On the northern border of the basin, along the Crevillente Fault Zone, left‐lateral displacement varies between 0.4 and 0.7 mm/year in the E‐W direction. The GPS‐based regional geodynamic models of the Western Mediterranean indicate that the residual shortening of the Eurasia‐Nubia plate convergence is accommodated in the eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula and the Algero‐Balearic Basin. Our results indicate that part of this residual deformation occurs at the NE end of the Eastern Betic Shear Zone, but significant deformation must be accommodated also to the north (External Betics) and to the south (Cartagena Basin and offshore area). We postulate that Eurasia‐Nubia plate convergence is transferred to the Eastern Betics because of the thin and rigid (potentially oceanic) crust of the Algero‐Balearic Basin, which acts as an indenter.

We consistently analyse for the first time the impact of survey depth and spatial resolution on the most used morphological parameters for classifying galaxies through non-parametric methods: Abraham ...and Conselice–Bershady concentration indices, Gini, M20 moment of light, asymmetry, and smoothness. Three different non-local data sets are used, Advanced Large Homogeneous Area Medium Band Redshift Astronomical (ALHAMBRA) and Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS, examples of deep ground-based surveys), and Cosmos Evolution Survey (COSMOS, deep space-based survey). We used a sample of 3000 local, visually classified galaxies, measuring their morphological parameters at their real redshifts (z ∼ 0). Then we simulated them to match the redshift and magnitude distributions of galaxies in the non-local surveys. The comparisons of the two sets allow us to put constraints on the use of each parameter for morphological classification and evaluate the effectiveness of the commonly used morphological diagnostic diagrams. All analysed parameters suffer from biases related to spatial resolution and depth, the impact of the former being much stronger. When including asymmetry and smoothness in classification diagrams, the noise effects must be taken into account carefully, especially for ground-based surveys. M20 is significantly affected, changing both the shape and range of its distribution at all brightness levels. We suggest that diagnostic diagrams based on 2–3 parameters should be avoided when classifying galaxies in ground-based surveys, independently of their brightness; for COSMOS they should be avoided for galaxies fainter than F814 = 23.0. These results can be applied directly to surveys similar to ALHAMBRA, SXDS and COSMOS, and also can serve as an upper/lower limit for shallower/deeper ones.
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has posed a real challenge to health systems. In Spain, the heterogeneous distribution of the virus infection and the different health strategies have conditioned the ...morbidity and fatality rate. The aim of this study was to analyse the lethality of the infection by sex and age range in the Autonomous Communities (AC) of Spain.
To perform the analysis, data were extracted from the Ministry of Health, Regional and Public Health Departments of the different AC. The infected population was estimated from the results of the ENE-COVID19 and the population registered on 1 January 2020 (INE) for the validity of the IgG antibody test with 80% sensitivity and 100% specificity. The case fatality rate (TL) (deaths/1000 estimated infected) by sex and age (<20years, 20-64 and ≥65years) was calculated for each AC. The standardized case fatality ratio (REL) was calculated by the exact method (EPIDAT).
The estimated prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Spain was 6% (range, 1.4% Ceuta -14.1% Community of Madrid). The TL in Spain was 9,6/1000, ranged per AC from 1/1000 in Melilla to 26.6/1000 in La Rioja, with no correlation between case fatality and prevalence of infection. The TL was higher in men (10.2/1000, ratio 1.17 with respect to women), except in Cataluña (ratio 0.92), and especially high in those over 64years of age in La Rioja (143.5/1000), Asturias (69.2/1000) and Basque Country (46.6/1000). Overall excess REL was found to be over 30% in La Rioja (2.91; 95%CI: 2.36-3.57), Asturias (1.51; 95%CI: 1.27-1.80), Basque Country (1.42; 95%CI: 1.31-1.54) and Extremadura (1.37; 95%CI: 1.20-1.57) and in those over 64 years in Madrid and the Canary Islands.
SARs-CoV-2 virus infection has been very unevenly distributed in the different ACs, with notably differences in TL between ACs, particularly high in La Rioja, Asturias and the Basque Country. Is important to study the excess in TL the population over 64years of age in the ACs of Madrid and the Canary Islands.
The term sepsis refers to a complex and heterogeneous syndrome. Although great progress has been made in improving the diagnosis and treatment of this condition, it continues to have a huge impact on ...morbidity and mortality worldwide. Mesenchymal stem cells are a population of multipotent cells that have immunomodulatory properties, anti-apoptotic effects, and antimicrobial activity. We studied these capacities in a porcine model of peritoneal sepsis.
We infused human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) into a porcine model of peritoneal sepsis. Twenty piglets were treated with antibiotics alone (control group) or antibiotics plus peritoneal infusion of ADSCs at a concentration of 2 × 10
cells/kg or 4 × 10
cells/kg (low- and high-dose experimental groups, respectively). The animals were evaluated at different time points to determine their clinical status, biochemical and hematologic parameters, presence of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in blood and peritoneal fluid, and finally by histologic analysis of the organs of the peritoneal cavity.
One day after sepsis induction, all animals presented peritonitis with bacterial infection as well as elevated C-reactive protein, haptoglobin, IL-1Ra, IL-6, and IL-1b. Xenogeneic ADSC infusion did not elicit an immune response, and peritoneal administration of the treatment was safe and feasible. One day after infusion, the two experimental groups showed a superior physical condition (e.g., mobility, feeding) and a significant increase of IL-10 and TGF-β in blood and a decrease of IL-1Ra, IL-1b, and IL-6. After 7 days, all animals treated with ADSCs had better results concerning blood biomarkers, and histopathological analysis revealed a lower degree of inflammatory cell infiltration of the organs of the peritoneal cavity.
Intraperitoneal administration of ADSCs as an adjuvant therapy for sepsis improves the outcome and diminishes the effects of peritonitis and associated organ damage by regulating the immune system and reducing intra-abdominal adhesions in a clinically relevant porcine model of abdominal sepsis.
The cosmological numerical simulations tell us that accretion of external metal-poor gas drives star formation (SF) in galaxy disks. One the best pieces of observational evidence supporting this ...prediction is the existence of low-metallicity star-forming regions in relatively high-metallicity host galaxies. The SF is thought to be fed by metal-poor gas recently accreted. Since the gas accretion is stochastic, there should be galaxies with all the properties of a host but without the low-metallicity starburst. These galaxies have not been identified yet. The exception may be UGC 2162, a nearby ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) that combines low surface brightness and relatively high metallicity. We confirm the high metallicity of UGC 2162 ( ) using spectra taken with the 10 m GTC telescope. UGC 2162 has the stellar mass, metallicity, and star formation rate surface density expected for a host galaxy in between outbursts. This fact suggests a physical connection between some UDGs and metal-poor galaxies, which may be the same type of object in a different phase of the SF cycle. UGC 2162 is a high-metallicity outlier of the mass-metallicity relation, a property shared by the few UDGs with known gas-phase metallicity.
Aims. Our goal is to characterise the dependence of the optical mass-to-light ratio on galaxy colour up to z = 1.5, expanding the redshift range explored in previous work. Methods. From the ...redshifts, stellar masses, and rest-frame luminosities of the ALHAMBRA multi-filter survey, we derive the mass-to-light ratio versus colour relation for quiescent and for star-forming galaxies. The intrinsic relation and its physical dispersion are derived with a Bayesian inference model. Results. The rest-frame i-band mass-to-light ratio of quiescent and star-forming galaxies presents a tight correlation with the rest-frame (g − i) colour up to z = 1.5. The mass-to-light ratio versus colour relation is linear for quiescent galaxies and quadratic for star-forming galaxies. The intrinsic dispersion in these relations is 0.02 dex for quiescent galaxies and 0.06 dex for star-forming ones. The derived relations do not present a significant redshift evolution and are compatible with previous local results in the literature. Finally, these tight relations also hold for g- and r-band luminosities. Conclusions. The derived mass-to-light ratio versus colour relations in ALHAMBRA can be used to predict the mass-to-light ratio from a rest-frame optical colour up to z = 1.5. These tight correlations do not change with redshift, suggesting that galaxies have evolved along the derived relations during the last 9 Gyr.
