The mortality of 8,964 heifer calves born in 122 dairy herds in southwest Sweden in 1998 to 2000 was monitored from January 1998 until December 2000. Farmers were requested to send carcasses for ...necropsy from animals that died from 1 d of age to first calving. Age and seasonal patterns of mortality were investigated using Kaplan-Meier curves. The median herd-level mortality risk was 2.1%. In total, 3.1% of the animals died before 90 d of age, 0.9% between d 91 and 210, and 2.2% between d 211 and first calving or d 810 (27 mo of age). The median age at death was 50 d and the risk of dying was highest during the first week of life. Of the 421 dead animals, 236 (56%) were subjected to either postmortem examination or were diagnosed as having died from trauma based on information from the farmers. In total, pneumonia was the most common cause of death (27%). However, in calves less than 31 d old, enteritis was the most common cause of death; in young stock 211 to 450 d old, trauma dominated; and in young stock more than 450 d old, trauma and calving-related diseases accounted for a majority of the mortality. The largest proportion of deaths was observed from January to March, and in June. Kaplan-Meier curves suggested that housing in small-group pens was associated with the lowest mortality (other housing systems were single pens and large-group pens with automatic milk feeders), but the association was not significant.

Climate change is estimated to increase the risk of the bark beetle (Ips typographus L.) mass outbreaks in Norway Spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) forests. Habitats that are thermally suitable for bark beetles may expand, and an increase in the frequency and intensity of droughts can promote drought stress on host trees. Drought affects tree vigor and in unison with environmental features it influences the local predisposition risk of forest stands to bark beetle attacks. We aimed to study how various environmental features influence the risk of bark beetle attacks during a drought year and the following years with more normal weather conditions but with higher bark beetle populations. We included features representing local forest stand attributes, topography, soil type and wetness, the proximity of clear-cuts and previous bark beetle attacks, and a machine learning algorithm (random forest) was applied to study the variation of predisposition risk across a 48,600 km2 study area in SE Sweden.
Forest stands with increased risk of bark beetle attack were distinguished with high accuracy both during drought and in normal weather conditions. The results show that during both study periods, spruce and mixed coniferous forests had elevated risk of attack, while forests with a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees had a lower risk. Forests with high average canopy height were strongly predisposed to bark beetle attacks. However, during the drought year risk was more similar between stands with lower and higher canopy height, suggesting that during drought periods younger trees can be predisposed to bark beetle attacks. The importance of soil moisture and position within the local landscape were highlighted as important features during the drought year.
Identifying areas with increased risk, supported by information on how environmental features control the predisposition risk during drought, could aid adaptation strategies and forest management intervention efforts. We conclude that geospatial data and machine learning have the potential to further support the digitalization of the forest industry, facilitating development of methods capable to quantify importance and dynamics of environmental features controlling the risk in local context. Corresponding methods could help to direct management actions more effectively and offer information for decision-making in changing climate.
The treatment with ultraviolet (UV) light is a well-known technique for water disinfection. Photodegradation by UV light is in discussion as measure for advanced water treatment that could provide a ...potential removal option for micropollutants. Micropollutants such as ingredients from personal care products are also present in grey water. Grey water gets increasingly attention as a source for water reuse. For that purpose it has to be treated. UV-treatment is an option. However, the knowledge on the fate of micropollutants within such a treatment is little. Therefore, we investigated the fate of the UV filters ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (EHMC), and octocrylene (OCR) as for both UV filters the presence in grey water was reported. OCR as a single compound was investigated with regard to its degradation kinetics and possible photo-transformation products (photo-TPs). These results were compared with those of EHMC previously reported in literature. The mixture of the two UV filters was also investigated to reveal if mixture effects occur regarding the elimination of the UV filters and the formation of TPs. A medium pressure mercury vapor lamp (200–400 nm) was employed for photolysis. This study shows that OCR itself was eliminated below the limit of detection after 256 min and that photo-TPs were formed. The photolysis of the mixture demonstrated alterations of the degradation rates and patterns. Additional TPs were formed by the reaction of the UV filters or TPs with each other. The study shows that more attention should be paid to mixture-effects and mixture-TPs that may cause further follow-up effects.

In this study, emission spectra of three different commonly used xenon irradiation sources were analyzed and compared for the first time to ascertain the most suitable setup to simulate natural solar ...radiation. In order to demonstrate setup differences, absolute photon fluxes of irradiation sources were received by actinometry. Verification was done by measuring quantum yields of the model compounds Penconazole, Terbutryn, and Mecoprop in every setup. Differences regarding kinetic aspects and the formation of transformation products (TPs) was evaluated by analyzing direct phototransformation and additionally photolysis in presence of Nitrate as a photosensitizer in one irradiation setup (optical bench). Results showed that a precise setup characterization is needed to estimate whether irradiation sources are suitable to simulate terrestrial sunlight. This was found to be especially important for weakly sunlight-absorbing substances. In comparison with direct photolysis, indirect photolysis led to an enhancement of degradation rate constants for all substances and in case of Mecoprop to different types of TPs that were formed during irradiation. This study underlined that there are big knowledge gaps regarding irradiation sources setups and conditions. It is therefore absolutely necessary to consider those factors while simulating substance degradation and the TP formation under environmental conditions.

Background: Pyrethroid insecticides are the most commonly used residential insecticides in the United States. Objectives: Our objective was to assess human exposure via biomonitoring to pyrethroid ...insecticides in a representative sample of the general U.S. population > 6 years of age. Methods: By using isotope-dilution high-performance liquid chromatography/electrospray chemical ionization/tandem mass spectrometry, we measured five urinary metabolites of pyrethroid insecticides in 5,046 samples collected as a part of the 1999-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Univariate, multivariate, and Pearson correlation analyses were performed using SUDAAN and SAS software, incorporating the appropriate sample weights into the analyses. Multivariate analyses included age, sex, race/ethnicity, creatinine, fasting status, and urine collection time as covariates. Results: We detected 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3PBA), a metabolite common to many pyrethroid insecticides, in more than 70% of the samples. The least-squares geometric mean (LSGM) concentration (corrected for covariates) of 3PBA and the frequency of detection increased from 1999— 2000 (0.292 ng/mL) to 2001-2002 (0.318 ng/mL) but not significantly. Non-Hispanic blacks had significantly higher LSGM 3PBA concentrations than did non-Hispanic whites and Mexican Americans in the 2001— 2002 survey period and in the combined 4-year survey periods but not in the 1999-2000 survey period. Children had significantly higher LSGM concentrations of 3PBA than did adolescents in both NHANES periods and than adults in NHANES 1999-2000. Cis-and írA « í-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane-l-carboxylic acid were highly correlated with each other and with 3PBA, suggesting that urinary 3PBA was derived primarily from exposure to permethrin, cypermethrin, or their degradates. Conclusions: Pyrethroid insecticide exposure in the U.S. population is widespread, and the presence of its metabolites in the urine of U.S. residents indicates that children may have higher exposures than adolescents and adults.
Summary Objective In patients with traumatic knee distorsion and hemarthrosis, to investigate the panorama of structural injury, as visualized on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Design Cohort study ...of 1145 consecutive patients with traumatic knee distorsion who underwent MRI within median 8 days after injury. We present structural injury as visualized on MRI in relation to age, sex and activity at injury. Population based gender specific annual incidences of common structural injuries were calculated. Results The majority of injuries (72%) occurred during sports. Overall, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture was the most common structural injury (52%), followed by meniscal tear (41%) and lateral patella dislocation (LPD, 17%). Only 12% of ACL tears were isolated with meniscal tear being the most common associated injury (55%). The annual incidence of ACL injury was 77 (70–85, 95% CI) per 100,000 inhabitants with significant differences between men (91, 80–103) and women (63, 53–73). In those aged 16 years and younger, LPD was the most frequent structural injury, both in boys (39%) and girls (43%). In this age group, the annual incidence of LPD was 88 (68–113) and higher in boys (113, 81–154) than in girls (62, 39–95). Conclusions ACL injury occurs in one out of two knees with traumatic hemarthrosis but only 12% are without concomitant structural injury. The overall rate of traumatic knee hemarthrosis and ACL injury is higher in men. In those aged 10–19 years, ACL rupture is more common among girls than boys whereas in those 16 years and younger, LPD is more common among boys than girls.

Population pharmacokinetic models can support exposure–response modeling and inform nicotine replacement ...therapy product development, but only limited model-based cross-study population pharmacokinetic analyses for nicotine replacement therapy products have been published.
Objectives
The aim of this retrospective analysis was to assess the population pharmacokinetics of nicotine across intravenous, oral, transdermal and oromucosal (mouth spray, chewing gum, lozenge and inhaler) routes and formulations in healthy smoking subjects.
Methods
Data on 930 unique subjects (46,016 observations) from 29 single- and repeated-dose studies with multiple formulations across intravenous, oral, transdermal and oromucosal routes of administration were included. Data from intravenous and extravascular routes of administration were modelled separately for run efficiency reasons. For developing extravascular models, clearance and disposition parameters and their inter-individual variabilities were fixed to the estimates for intravenously delivered nicotine. Detectable pre-dose nicotine concentrations were modelled as a hypothetical nicotine bolus into the central compartment at the start of wash-out. Modelling repeated-dose oral and buccal administrations required a time-dependent increase in clearance or decrease in bioavailability to describe the data adequately.
Results
Disposition of intravenous nicotine was best described by a three-compartment model with initial and terminal half-lives of 7 min and 4.5 h, respectively, and the absorption of single oral doses was best described with a first-order absorption rate constant of 1.55 h
−1
. The data of buccal formulations were modelled with parallel oromucosal absorption and gastrointestinal absorption of a part of the dose that is swallowed. For transdermal nicotine, parallel zero- and first-order release from the patch and a transit-compartment absorption model best described the data. Key pharmacokinetic parameters were reliably estimated, with typical values for clearance (67 L/h for a 70-kg subject), volume of distribution (4.3 L/kg), oral bioavailability (40%) and transdermal bioavailability (76%) within expected ranges. The estimated fraction of the dose swallowed for buccal formulations ranged from 55% (gum) to 69% (lozenge).
Conclusions
Robust population pharmacokinetic models were developed for five nicotine replacement therapy product types and for intravenous and oral nicotine. These population pharmacokinetic models are used in exposure–response analyses and simulation-based nicotine replacement therapy product design.
Background/Aim: Treatment of latently infected individuals at increased risk of reactivation is a cornerstone in tuberculosis control. Although asylum seekers without residence permit in Sweden are ...offered screening for both active tuberculosis and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), treatment for LTBI is often not initiated due to anticipated low rates of treatment completion. We aimed to compare completion rates for LTBI treatment between asylum seekers and other patients, and between asylum seekers with and without residence permit.
Methods: Data were collected retrospectively from tuberculosis clinic registers and medical records. For comparison of treatment completion rates, relative risks (RR) and confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. Predictors of completion were assessed by logistic regression multivariate analysis.
Results: Treatment completion was achieved in 506/606 subjects (83%). RR of non-completion for asylum seekers (n = 297) compared to other subjects (n = 309) was 1.13 (95% CI: 0.79-1.61; p = .51), and 0.91 (95% CI: 0.53-1.56; p = .72) for asylum seekers without residence permit (n = 217) compared to asylum seekers with residence permit (n = 80). Completion rates increased from 53% in 2008 to 92% in 2015-2016. The following factors were associated with completion: scheduled interpreter-assisted appointments throughout the course of therapy, shorter treatment duration (6 vs. 9 months), and being treated in connection with immunosuppressive therapy.
Conclusion: Treatment completion rates were similar between asylum seekers and other subjects, supporting initiation of latent tuberculosis treatment in immigrants with recent arrival to low-endemic countries.
Solar energy simulations are used to quantify the potential of the passive use (daylight, solar gains) and the active use (photovoltaics and solar thermal) of solar energy. The simulations can be ...performed at different scales e.g. buildings, neighbourhoods and cities, with different requirements on the data. For example, for the neighbourhood simulations we need simplified building geometries that can be retrieved from city models, and window information that can be extracted from BIM models (as in many cases window information is missing in city models). In this context, city models and BIM need to be integrated and reconciled. In this paper, we investigate two approaches to integrate and retrieve such information in a case study, where the BIM data is stored in IFC and the city model in CityGML (LOD2). The first approach is to perform a schema matching in an ETL tool, so as to convert and import window information from the IFC file into the CityGML model to create a LOD2-3 building model. We also investigate an alternative avenue, namely a semantic web approach, in which both the BIM and city models are transformed into knowledge graphs (linked data). City models and BIM utilize their respective but interlinked domain ontologies. Particularly, two ontologies are investigated for BIM data, i.e., the ifcOWL ontology and the building topology ontology (BOT). This paper compares different paths of such integrative data retrieval, as well as discloses the gaps mainly with the semantic web approach to further unlock its potential.
