What makes communities 'sound'? One key feature noted in this article is resilience, though a more extensive list of features of sound communities is also addressed. The term 'sound communities' is ...intentionally polysemous and perhaps especially for this reason demands an intensely interdisciplinary approach to its definition for use within ethnomusicology. The keyword 'sound communities' builds on the work of ethnomusicologist Jeff Todd Titon (2015) and puts the discussion in a much wider context of studies of community, communities of practice and performance, 'sound praxis' (Araujo, 2009), applied ethnomusicologies and peacebuilding. Case studies presented in this article are largely based on applied ethnomusicology approaches.
The figure of the Cossack in Canada has long been objectified as a model of Ukrainian culture and performance. Rather than a fixed stereotype, however, research shows the Cossack to be a flexible ...point of negotiation for Ukrainian identity and cultural expression in Canada. Analyses of dance and music performances and rich interview data demonstrate how hypermasculinity in particular has become a significant aspect of the Cossack image in recent Ukrainian Canadian song and dance performances. Some reasons for the wide appeal of the Cossack image in Canada are also explored in this essay.

tablet technology-supported teaching strategies in a dance classroom context. Dance classrooms use instructor-accessed music as a regular ...element of lessons, but video is both challenging and time-consuming to produce or display. The results of this study highlight how the Apple iPad tablet device can be used in the dance classroom for efficient digital media access as well as custom instructional video production. Three technology-supported teaching strategies-mobile small group demonstration, large group demonstration, and student-controlled playback and practice activities-were identified and described as part of this iPad implementation study. In theory, dance educators could enhance and extend their classroom practice using these new strategies or components of them. In practice, technology-supported teaching strategies require preparation time and appropriate classroom management techniques to be successful. Further research on efficient dance video segment creation and the benefits of those segments is needed.
I met Arnie Strynadka, who billed himself as the “The Uke-Cree Fiddler,” while conducting field research at the Vegreville Ukrainian Pysanka Festival in Alberta in 2002. When I stopped at Arnie’s ...booth to chat, he told me that he was the child of a marriage between a Cree woman and a man born of Ukrainian immigrants. I had already spent almost a decade researching and writing about Ukrainian music, culture, and identity, and I had spent my entire lifetime as a Ukrainian cultural, music, and dance performer and enthusiast. This was the first I had ever heard of family relations
In 2013, the Singing Storytellers research-creation public outreach project was initiated to study the lives, music and verbal art of bardic traditions across cultures. Singer-songwriters in ...contemporary popular music traditions have been the focus of scholarship, particularly in popular music studies, and popular discourse. In the case of Singing Storytellers, this included scholars, artist-practitioners, public and educational sector workers, community organizations and tourism and music industry professionals. The study of bards in Singing Storytellers resonates with theoretical interest in ethnomusicology, humanities and social sciences, offering opportunities to consider the importance of the individual in society and the politics of representation. One of the key legacy components of Singing Storytellers was our new production of a core Mande epic, the Sunjata story. The Singing Storytellers Symposium created a hub of activity and myriad opportunities for face-to-face interaction.
