Abstract
Nowadays, due to the energy, water, and arable land crises, as well as the constant global population growth and urbanization, water, energy, and food sources are strongly linked to each ...other, and a comprehensive analysis including all the influencing factors has to be carried out. In this context, the need to improve the energy performance of traditional cultivation systems, as well as to develop alternative and innovative ones, is causing a shift in interest from greenhouses to indoor farming methods (such as vertical farms) in the agricultural sector. In fact, they allow for completely controlled crop production without the use of chemical pesticides. Moreover, their productivity is independent of external conditions and improved compared to traditional systems. However, their energy consumption is larger than that of greenhouses. To evaluate the techno-economic feasibility of such systems, a comprehensive model of a vertical farm, including air conditioning, lighting systems, and plant evapotranspiration, has been developed to quantify the energy share for the different elements of the system (air conditioning and lighting) and to relate the energy consumption to the kilogram of produced crop, analysing exclusively the growth phase. The analysis is carried out for different cities and considers different scenarios in terms of lighting and electricity costs.
Complex cytokine networks play an important role in a wide range of pregnancy-related processes. During physiological pregnancy, the balance of T helper lymphocytes Th1 and Th2 is strongly shifted ...toward Th2, which has a protective role in the feto–maternal interaction. The aim of the present study is to establish the serum concentrations, ranges, and trends of anti-inflammatory interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-10, and inflammatory IL-12A, during three phases of gestation in the bitch (20–30, 31–40, and 41–57 days of gestation). Our results indicate that, in early gestation, IL-4 and -10 serum concentrations are elevated and might depend on progesterone that could act as a potent inhibitor of Th1 responses inducing, conversely, the production of Th2-type cytokines (i.e., IL-10 and IL-4). On the other hand, between 30 and 40 days of gestation, the concentrations of the anti-inflammatory ILs decrease probably because of high concentrations of prolactin, which is endowed with immunostimulatory properties on different immune cell types. In the third phase of gestation (41–57 days), an increase in IL-10 occurs, which might depend on high levels of 17β-estradiol that, during pregnancy, interfere with the ability of dendritic cells to stimulate T lymphocytes, acting as an anti-inflammatory factor. Conversely, the low and persistent concentrations of inflammatory IL-12A, throughout pregnancy, compared with anti-inflammatory ILs, might depend on the characteristic cytokine products of Thl and Th2 cells that are known to be mutually inhibitory. The monitoring of immunological status via the levels of cytokines during pregnancy in the bitch, could represent a diagnostic tool to predict and/or prevent pregnancy abnormality, as demonstrated in women.
The widespread use of several new non-cytotoxic drugs and the significant improvements in functional imaging highlights a number of difficulties in monitoring, interpreting and predicting treatment ...response in clinical practice. Certain guidelines for disease assessment after therapy are already available: the traditional Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours guidelines based on tumour size variations using conventional imaging technologies, the recent combined method developed by Choi and colleagues in gastrointestinal stromal tumour treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors based on tumour density variations using computed tomography (CT), and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer criteria based on tumour glucose metabolism variations using fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET). At the moment combined PET/CT response criteria are still not available. A number of new PET compounds other than FDG are also currently being developed to visualize specific cellular and molecular tumour pathways but their role in assessment and prediction of cancer treatment response has not yet been thoroughly investigated in a large series. However, in clinical practice many oncologists treat cancer patients with targeted therapies or chemotherapy and evaluate the response using conventional or functional imaging without appropriate and standardized guidelines. The aim of this study was to present a selection of clinical cases that illustrate the usefulness of new PET tracers and efficacy evaluation of new drugs. In the era of molecular imaging and molecular therapies, these cases highlight the urgency to develop new criteria for treatment assessment and the exigency of correctly interpreting the biological information obtained from new technologies, and introduce new concepts that require further investigation in clinical trials.
This paper describes serum and milk oxidative profiles during early postpartum (10th–16thday) of dairy cows, after three different treatments: β-carotene and α-tocopherol (Dalmavital®, Fatro, Italy) ...(VAE Group); l-carnitine, d, l-acetylmethionine, cyanocobalamin (Adiuxan®, Ceva Vetem, Italy) (LCAR Group) and Dalmavital®+Adiuxan® (VAE/LCAR Group). Antioxidant administrations resulted in a general reduction in ROS concentrations which decreased more after a single drug administration (VAE and LCAR Groups) vitamin A and E serum levels increased in the three treated groups compared to control one (p<0.05).
Milk lipoperoxide content was statistically lower in treated cows than in control ones, whereas, as to vitamins, only vitamin E increased in all the treated groups compared to control. Taken together, the results of this study confirm the efficacy of antioxidant administration in the early postpartum of dairy cows and suggest that an excess in antioxidant administration may result, paradoxically, in an increase in ROS generation.
Herein is described the case of a 64-year-old patient affected by metastatic clear-cell carcinoma, with exclusive bone disease, subjected after the initial cytoreductive nephrectomy to 3 successive ...lines of medical treatment (sunitinib, everolimus, and sorafenib) and multiple locoregional treatments (spinal surgery, radiation therapy, and selective arterial embolization), resulting in a surprisingly long survival of over 75 months. In the era of target therapy, integration strategies, including additional locoregional treatment to medical therapy, are essential to optimize the clinical benefit, to maximize treatment duration overcoming focal progressive disease, and to improve the quality of life. In this context, we would highlight that selective transcatheter embolization of bone metastases from renal cell carcinoma should be considered as an effective and safe option in the palliative setting for patients with bone metastasis, especially for pain relief.
This paper presents a thermoeconomic analysis of a solar combined heating and power (S-CHP) system based on hybrid photovoltaic-thermal (PV/T) collectors for the University Sport Centre (USC) of ...Bari, Italy. Hourly demand data for space heating, swimming pool heating, hot water and electricity provision as well as the local weather data are used as inputs to a transient model developed in TRNSYS. Economic performance is evaluated by considering the investment costs and the cost savings due to the reduced electricity and natural gas consumptions. The results show that 38.2% of the electricity demand can be satisfied by the PV/T S-CHP system based on an installation area of 4,000 m2. The coverage increases to 81.3% if the excess electricity is fed to the grid. In addition, the system can cover 23.7% of the space heating demand and 53.8% of the demand for the swimming pool and hot water heating. A comparison with an equivalent gas-fired internal combustion engine (ICE) CHP system shows that the PV/T system has a longer payback time, i.e., 11.6 years vs. 3 years, but significantly outperforms the ICE solution in terms of CO2 emission reduction, i.e., 435 tons CO2/year vs. 164 tons CO2/year. These findings suggest that even though the economic competitiveness of the proposed PV/T S-CHP system is not yet favourable when compared to the alternative gas-fired ICE-based system, the S-CHP solution has an excellent decarbonisation potential, and that if this is of importance in the wider sense of energy-system decarbonisation, it is necessary to consider how the higher upfront costs can be addressed.

The present paper is a critical review about the recent development of new agents that have revolutioned the therapeutical approach of solid tumours with a particular focus on colorectal cancer. ...Until a few years ago, chemotherapy has been considered the only medical treatment for advanced disease. At the moment, new drugs blocking some cell functions, such as monoclonal antibodies or tyrosin kinase inhibitors are available for many oncologists, but their efficacy should be debated for several reasons. Despite having a strong biological and preclinical rationale, the clinical results of these agents are not comparable to the results obtained by imatinib in gastrointestinal stromal tumour or in chronic myeloid leukaemia even though superior to chemotherapy alone. Moreover, the efficacy does not show any correlation with the molecular expressions of the tumours. In this review, we considered different hypotheses in order to explain these results.
Bovine follicular cysts (FCs) are a common cause of economic loss in modern dairy herds. Their aetiopathogenesis is not completely understood, even though an inadequate hypothalamic release of GnRH ...at the time of ovulation is considered to be their main cause. Much evidence, however, suggests a role for adrenergic innervation in ovarian functions, such as follicular development, steroid hormone secretion, and follicular contractility, the latter being an event important for ovulation. Moreover, in humans, polycystic ovary syndrome, a disease very similar to bovine follicular cysts, is characterised by increased density of adrenergic nerves. Given these premises, the aim of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness and mode of action of a novel strategy for the treatment of bovine follicular cysts. In the in vivo experiment, 170 Friesian cows diagnosed with follicular cysts were assigned to four groups (groups A, B, C, and D) to assess the effects of epidural administration of a β-adrenergic antagonist (carazolol) alone or in combination with a GnRH analogue (lecirelin). The four groups underwent the following treatments: Group A was administered lecirelin in combination with carazolol; Group B was administered carazolol; Group C was administered lecirelin; and Group D was administered only normal saline solution. In the in vitro experiment, strips of the walls of cystic follicles recovered post-mortem were suspended in an organ bath, connected to an isometric force transducer and exposed to increasing doses of epinephrine or to the same treatment after exposure to carazolol for 15 min (n = 10). The amplitude and frequency of the contractile activity were recorded. None of the control cows was observed in oestrus or was submitted to AI. The combination of lecirelin and carazolol induced a significant increase in the number of cows in oestrus (88%) compared to lecirelin alone or to carazolol alone (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01, respectively). The combination of lecirelin and carazolol and lecirelin alone were significantly more efficacious than carazolol alone (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05, respectively). In the in vitro experiment, epinephrine increased the amplitude of the contractions of the strips in a dose-dependent manner. This response was significantly enhanced in strips pre-treated with carazolol. The treatments had no effect on the frequency of contractions. In conclusion, our work demonstrates that the epidural administration of a GnRH analogue and a β-adrenergic blocker is an effective means of treating cows with cystic ovarian disease. Moreover, it confirms, from a clinical point of view, that alterations of the adrenergic system and of the contractility of the follicular wall can be considered aetiopathogenic factors involved in the development of FCs. The results of this study lay the basis for a new therapeutic approach to FCs.
