We present the results of a search for rapidly evolving transients in the Dark Energy Survey Supernova Programme. These events are characterized by fast light-curve evolution (rise to peak in ≲10 d ...and exponential decline in ≲30 d after peak). We discovered 72 events, including 37 transients with a spectroscopic redshift from host galaxy spectral features. The 37 events increase the total number of rapid optical transients by more than a factor of two. They are found at a wide range of redshifts (0.05 < z < 1.56) and peak brightnesses (-15.75 > Mg > -22.25). The multiband photometry is well fit by a blackbody up to few weeks after peak. The events appear to be hot (T ≈ 10 000–30 000 K) and large (R ≈ 1014 - 2 × 1015 cm) at peak, and generally expand and cool in time, though some events show evidence for a receding photosphere with roughly constant temperature. Spectra taken around peak are dominated by a blue featureless continuum consistent with hot, optically thick ejecta. We compare our events with a previously suggested physical scenario involving shock breakout in an optically thick wind surrounding a core-collapse supernova, we conclude that current models for such a scenario might need an additional power source to describe the exponential decline. We find that these transients tend to favour star-forming host galaxies, which could be consistent with a core-collapse origin. However, more detailed modelling of the light curves is necessary to determine their physical origin.
Aim
This study sought to determine the role of free radicals derived from mitochondria in the vasculature in the recognized age‐related endothelial dysfunction of human skeletal muscle feed arteries ...(SMFAs).
Methods
A total of 44 SMFAs were studied with and without acute exposure to the mitochondria‐targeted antioxidant MitoQ and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) blockade. The relative abundance of proteins from the electron transport chain, phosphorylated (p‐) to endothelial (e) NOS ratio, manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) and the mitochondria‐derived superoxide (O2−) levels were assessed in SMFA. Endothelium‐dependent and endothelium‐independent SMFA vasodilation was assessed in response to flow‐induced shear stress, acetylcholine (ACh) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP).
Results
MitoQ restored endothelium‐dependent vasodilation in the old to that of the young when stimulated by both flow (young: 68 ± 5; old: 25 ± 7; old + MitoQ 65 ± 9%) and ACh (young: 97 ± 4; old: 59 ± 10; old + MitoQ: 98 ± 5%), but did not alter the initially uncompromised, endothelium‐independent vasodilation (SNP). Compared to the young, MitoQ in the old diminished the initially elevated mitochondria‐derived O2− levels and appeared to attenuate the breakdown of MnSOD. Furthermore, MitoQ increased the ratio of p‐eNOS to NOS and the restoration of endothelium‐dependent vasodilation in the old by MitoQ was ablated by NOS blockade.
Conclusion
This study demonstrated that MitoQ reverses age‐related vascular dysfunction by what appears to be an NO‐dependent mechanism in human SMFAs. These findings suggest that mitochondria‐targeted antioxidants may have utility in terms of counteracting the attenuated blood flow and vascular dysfunction associated with advancing age.
Background. Cryptococcus gattii (Cg) has caused increasing infections in the US Pacific Northwest (PNW) since 2004. We describe this outbreak and compare clinical aspects of infection in the United ...States among patients infected with different Cg genotypes. Methods. Beginning in 2005, PNW state health departments conducted retrospective and prospective passive surveillance for Cg infections, including patient interviews and chart reviews; clinical isolates were genotyped at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We examined symptom frequency and underlying conditions in US patients with Cg infection and modeled factors associated with death. Results. From 1 December 2004 to July 2011, 96 Cg infections were reported to the CDC. Eighty-three were in patients in or travelers to the PNW, 78 of which were genotypes VGIIa, VGIIb, or VGIIc (outbreak strains). Eighteen patients in and outside the PNW had other molecular type Cg infections (nonoutbreak strains). Patients with outbreak strain infections were more likely than those with nonoutbreak-strain infections to have preexisting conditions (86% vs 31%, respectively; P < .0001) and respiratory symptoms (75% vs 36%, respectively; P = .03) and less likely to have central nervous system (CNS) symptoms (37% vs 90%, respectively; P = .008). Preexisting conditions were associated with increased pneumonia risk and decreased risk of meningitis and CNS symptoms. Nineteen (33%) of 57 patients died. Past-year oral steroid use increased odds of death in multivariate analysis (P = .05). Conclusions. Clinical differences may exist between outbreak-strain (VGIIa, VGIIb, and VGIIc) and nonoutbreak-strain Cg infections in the United States. Clinicians should have a low threshold for testing for Cg, particularly among patients with recent travel to the PNW.
The use of organic materials presents a tremendous opportunity to significantly impact the functionality and pervasiveness of large-area electronics. Commercialization of this technology requires ...reduction in manufacturing costs by exploiting inexpensive low-temperature deposition and patterning techniques, which typically lead to lower device performance. We report a low-cost approach to control the microstructure of solution-cast acene-based organic thin films through modification of interfacial chemistry. Chemically and selectively tailoring the source/drain contact interface is a novel route to initiating the crystallization of soluble organic semiconductors, leading to the growth on opposing contacts of crystalline films that extend into the transistor channel. This selective crystallization enables us to fabricate high-performance organic thin-film transistors and circuits, and to deterministically study the influence of the microstructure on the device characteristics. By connecting device fabrication to molecular design, we demonstrate that rapid film processing under ambient room conditions and high performance are not mutually exclusive.
In this study, the radiation process in the Korean Integrated Model (KIM) is modified to calculate the cloud radiative forcing keeping a physical consistency with the microphysics, convection, and ...cloudiness schemes in an aspect of hydrometeor. A formula to calculate effective radii of cloud water in radiation scheme of the KIM is modified to be consistent with that in the microphysics scheme and the radiative effect of a subgrid-scale hydrometeor is considered along with convective parameterization and cloudiness schemes. The impacts of these modifications on radiation and precipitation are diagnosed via an observation comparison, and a detailed analysis of these impacts is conducted. Especially, the contrasting feedback of the subgrid-scale hydrometeor on precipitation over the land and the ocean is separately discussed.
Surface defects in semiconducting materials, though they have been widely studied, remain a prominent source of loss in optoelectronic devices; here we sought a new angle of approach, looking into ...the dynamic roles played by surface defects under atmospheric stressors and their chemical passivants in the lifetime of optoelectronic materials. We find that surface defects possess properties distinct from those of bulk defects. ab initio molecular dynamics simulations reveal a previously overlooked reversible degradation mechanism mediated by hydrogen vacancies. We find that dynamic surface adsorption affinity (DAA) relative to surface treatment ligands is a surrogate for passivation efficacy, a more strongly-correlated feature than is the static binding strength emphasized in prior reports. This guides us to design targeted passivator ligands with high molecular polarity: for example, 4-aminobutylphosphonic acid exhibits strong DAA and provides defect passivation applicable to a range of perovskite compositions, including suppressed hydrogen vacancy formation, enhanced photovoltaic performances and operational stability in perovskite solar cells.
When a crystal is subjected to a periodic potential, under certain circumstances it can adjust itself to follow the periodicity of the potential, resulting in a commensurate state. Of particular ...interest are topological defects between the two commensurate phases, such as solitons and domain walls. Here we report a commensurate-incommensurate transition for graphene on top of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Depending on the rotation angle between the lattices of the two crystals, graphene can either stretch to adapt to a slightly different hBN periodicity (for small angles, resulting in a commensurate state) or exhibit little adjustment (the incommensurate state). In the commensurate state, areas with matching lattice constants are separated by domain walls that accumulate the generated strain. Such soliton-like objects are not only of significant fundamental interest, but their presence could also explain recent experiments where electronic and optical properties of graphene-hBN heterostructures were observed to be considerably altered.
We analyze the trajectories of 313 particles seen in the near‐Bennu environment between December 2018 and September 2019. Of these, 65% follow suborbital trajectories, 20% undergo more than one ...orbital revolution around the asteroid, and 15% directly escape on hyperbolic trajectories. The median lifetime of these particles is ∼6 hr. The trajectories are sensitive to Bennu's gravitational field, which allows us to reliably estimate the spherical harmonic coefficients through degree 8 and to resolve nonuniform mass distribution through degree 3. The particles are perturbed by solar radiation pressure, enabling effective area‐to‐mass ratios to be estimated. By assuming that particles are oblate ellipsoids of revolution, and incorporating photometric measurements, we find a median axis ratio of 0.27 and diameters for equivalent‐volume spheres ranging from 0.22–6.1 cm, with median 0.74 cm. Our size distribution agrees well with that predicted for fragmentation due to diurnal thermal cycling. Detailed models of known accelerations do not produce a match to the observed trajectories, so we also estimate empirical accelerations. These accelerations appear to be related to mismodeling of radiation pressure, but we cannot rule out contributions from mass loss. Most ejections take place at local solar times in the afternoon and evening (12:00–24:00), although they occur at any time of day. We independently identify ten ejection events, some of which have previously been reported. We document a case where a particle ricocheted off the surface, revealing a coefficient of restitution 0.57±0.01 and demonstrating that some apparent ejections are not related to surface processes.
Plain Language Summary
The Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS‐REx) mission discovered that near‐Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu is periodically ejecting small particles from its surface, placing it in the uncommon class of “active asteroids.” We linked together individual detections of ejected particles and used numerical models of the forces acting on them to ascertain their trajectories and fates. We found that most particles have suborbital trajectories, meaning they fall back to Bennu's surface shortly after being ejected, but some orbit Bennu for days at a time, and some escape directly into space. From the particle trajectories, we are able to estimate their sizes (comparable to pebbles, from a few millimeters to a few centimeters in diameter) and shapes (probably flake like). Their trajectories also make it possible to estimate Bennu's gravity field more precisely than spacecraft measurements and help shed light on the possible causes of the ejections.

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is activated during muscle contraction in response to the increase in AMP and decrease in phosphocreatine (PCr). Once activated, AMPK has been proposed to ...phosphorylate a number of targets, resulting in increases in glucose transport, fatty acid oxidation, and gene transcription. Although it has been possible to directly observe phosphorylation of one of these targets, acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) in vitro, it has been more difficult to obtain direct evidence of ACC phosphorylation in contracting skeletal muscle. In these experiments using a phosphoserine antibody to ACC and a phosphothreonine antibody to AMPK, evidence was obtained for phosphorylation and activation of ACC in vitro, in gastrocnemius muscle electrically stimulated at different frequencies, and in muscle from rats running on the treadmill. Significant negative linear correlations between phospho-ACC and ACC activity were observed in all models (P < 0.01). The decline in ACC activity was related to the decrease in PCr and the rise in AMP. A relationship between phospho-AMPK (threonine 172) and activity of AMPK immunoprecipitated with anti-alpha(2) subunit antibody preparation was also observed. These data provide the first evidence of a direct link between extent of phosphorylation of these proteins at sites recognized by the antibodies and activity of the enzymes in electrically stimulated muscle and in muscle of rats running on the treadmill.
