Aims. We present the characteristics and some early scientific results of the first instrument at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), the Large Binocular Camera (LBC). Each LBT telescope unit will ...be equipped with similar prime focus cameras. The blue channel is optimized for imaging in the $UV-B$ bands and the red channel for imaging in the VRIz bands. The corrected field-of-view of each camera is approximately 30 arcmin in diameter, and the chip area is equivalent to a 23$\times$23 arcmin2 field. In this paper we also present the commissioning results of the blue channel. Methods. The scientific and technical performance of the blue channel was assessed by measurement of the astrometric distortion, flat fielding, ghosts, and photometric calibrations. These measurements were then used as input to a data reduction pipeline applied to science commissioning data. Results. The measurements completed during commissioning show that the technical performance of the blue channel is in agreement with original expectations. Since the red camera is very similar to the blue one we expect similar performance from the commissioning that will be performed in the following months in binocular configuration. Using deep UV image, acquired during the commissioning of the blue camera, we derived faint UV galaxy-counts in a ~ 500 sq. arcmin sky area to U(Vega) = 26.5. These galaxy counts imply that the blue camera is the most powerful UV imager presently available and in the near future in terms of depth and extent of the field-of-view. We emphasize the potential of the blue camera to increase the robustness of the UGR multicolour selection of Lyman break galaxies at redshift z ~ 3.
Context. Deep multicolour surveys are the main tool for exploring the formation and evolution of the very faint galaxies that are beyond the spectroscopic limit of present technology. The photometric ...properties of these faint galaxies are usually compared with current renditions of semianalytical models to provide constraints on the detailed treatment of the fundamental physical processes involved in galaxy formation and evolution, namely the mass assembly and the star formation. Aims. Galaxy counts over large sky areas in the 360 nm near-UV band are particularly difficult to obtain given the low efficiency of near-UV instrumentation, even at 8 m class telescopes. Observing in the near-UV bands can provide a first assessment of the distribution of star formation activity in distant (up to z ~ 3) galaxies. A relatively large instrumental field of view helps to minimize the biases caused by cosmic variance. Methods. We obtained deep images in the 360 nm U band provided by the blue channel of the Large Binocular Camera at the prime focus of the Large Binocular Telescope. Over an area of $\simeq$0.4 sq. deg., we derived the galaxy number counts down to $U = 27$ in the Vega system (corresponding to $U = 27.86$ in the AB system) at a completeness level of 30% reaching the faintest current limit for this wavelength and sky area. Results. The shape of the galaxy number counts in the U band can be described by a double power-law, the bright side being consistent with the shape of shallower surveys of comparable or greater areas. The slope bends over significantly at $U > 23.5$ ensuring the convergence of the contribution by star-forming galaxies to the extragalactic background light in the near-UV band to a value that is more than 70% of the most recent upper limits derived for this band. We jointly compared our near-UV and K band counts collected from the literature with a few selected hierarchical CDM models, concentrating on specific critical issues in the physical description of the galaxy formation and evolution.

reference survey: the sequence of pointings of EWS, deep fields, and calibration fields, as well as spacecraft movements followed by
Euclid
as it operates in a step-and-stare mode from its orbit around the Lagrange point L2. Each EWS pointing has four dithered frames; we simulated the dither pattern at the pixel level to analyse the effective coverage. We used up-to-date models for the sky background to define the
Euclid
region-of-interest (RoI). The building of the reference survey is highly constrained from calibration cadences, spacecraft constraints, and background levels; synergies with ground-based coverage were also considered. Via purposely built software, we first generated a schedule for the calibrations and deep fields observations. On a second stage, the RoI was tiled and scheduled with EWS observations, using an algorithm optimised to prioritise the best sky areas, produce a compact coverage, and ensure thermal stability. The result is the optimised reference survey RSD_2021A, which fulfils all constraints and is a good proxy for the final solution. The current EWS covers ≈14 500 deg

Stellar evolution model databases, spanning a wide ranges of masses and initial chemical compositions, are nowadays a major tool to study Galactic and extragalactic stellar populations. We describe ...here the current status of the widely used BaSTI (A Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones) database. We focus in particular on the efforts devoted to port BaSTI to a VO-compliant environment, the BaSTI Web portal that enables users to retrieve data tables and run a range of web tools to facilitate the theoretical analysis of observations, and planned future developments within the framework of the Italian Virtual Observatory project.
The origins of the Italian contribution to the international Virtual Observatory (VO) were mainly tied to the definition and implementation of a Data Grid using Grid standards. From there on, by ...means of a step-wise evolution, activities started including the implementation of VO-aware tools and facilities, or the production of services accessing data archives in ways compliant to the international VO standards. An important activity the Italian VO community has carried out is the dissemination of the VO capabilities to professionals, students and amateurs: in particular, an important and maybe unique success has been bringing to the classrooms the VO, and using it as a powerful tool to teach astronomy at all levels, from junior high school to undergraduate courses. Lately, there has been also direct involvement of the Italian community in the definition of standards and services within the framework of the International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA), and participation and leadership in the IVOA Working Groups.
Along this path, the national funding for these activities has been rather low, although essential to carry the activities on. There were no bursts of funding to allow a quick rise in activities leading to the fast realisation of tools and systems. Rather, the manpower involved in VObs.it has been always fairly low but steady. In the view of managing a national VO initiative with a low budget, strategic choices were made to exploit the available resources and to guarantee a constant background activity, mainly geared at providing services to the community, development in lower-priority VO areas, dissemination and support.

We present the current accounting of systematic effect uncertainties for the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) that are relevant to the 2015 release of the Planck cosmological results, showing the ...robustness and consistency of our data set, especially for polarization analysis. We use two complementary approaches: (i) simulations based on measured data and physical models of the known systematic effects; and (ii) analysis of difference maps containing the same sky signal ("null-maps"). The LFI temperature data are limited by instrumental noise. At large angular scales the systematic effects are below the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature power spectrum by several orders of magnitude. In polarization the systematic uncertainties are dominated by calibration uncertainties and compete with the CMB E-modes in the multipole range 10-20. Based on our model of all known systematic effects, we show that these effects introduce a slight bias of around 0.2sigma on the reionization optical depth derived from the 70GHz EE spectrum using the 30 and 353GHz channels as foreground templates. At 30GHz the systematic effects are smaller than the Galactic foreground at all scales in temperature and polarization, which allows us to consider this channel as a reliable template of synchrotron emission. We assess the residual uncertainties due to LFI effects on CMB maps and power spectra after component separation and show that these effects are smaller than the CMB amplitude at all scales. We also assess the impact on non-Gaussianity studies and find it to be negligible. Some residuals still appear in null maps from particular sky survey pairs, particularly at 30 GHz, suggesting possible straylight contamination due to an imperfect knowledge of the beam far sidelobes.
This paper presents an overview of the polarized sky as seen by Planck HFI at 353 GHz, which is the most sensitive Planck channel for dust polarization. We construct and analyse maps of dust ...polarization fraction and polarization angle at 1° resolution, taking into account noise bias and possible systematic effects. The sensitivity of the Planck HFI polarization measurements allows for the first time a mapping of Galactic dust polarized emission on large scales, including low column density regions. We find that the maximum observed dust polarization fraction is high (pmax = 19.8%), in particular in some regions of moderate hydrogen column density (NH < 2 × 1021 cm-2). The polarization fraction displays a large scatter at NH below a few 1021 cm-2. There is a general decrease in the dust polarization fraction with increasing column density above NH ≃ 1 × 1021 cm-2 and in particular a sharp drop above NH ≃ 1.5 × 1022 cm-2. We characterize the spatial structure of the polarization angle using the angle dispersion function. We find that the polarization angle is ordered over extended areas of several square degrees, separated by filamentary structures of high angle dispersion function. These appear as interfaces where the sky projection of the magnetic field changes abruptly without variations in the column density. The polarization fraction is found to be anti-correlated with the dispersion of polarization angles. These results suggest that, at the resolution of 1°, depolarization is due mainly to fluctuations in the magnetic field orientation along the line of sight, rather than to the loss of grain alignment in shielded regions. We also compare the polarization of thermal dust emission with that of synchrotron measured with Planck, low-frequency radio data, and Faraday rotation measurements toward extragalactic sources. These components bear resemblance along the Galactic plane and in some regions such as the Fan and North Polar Spur regions. The poor match observed in other regions shows, however, that dust, cosmic-ray electrons, and thermal electrons generally sample different parts of the line of sight.
We used a proper combination of high-resolution and wide-field multiwavelength observations collected at three different telescopes (HST, LBT, and CFHT) to probe the blue straggler star (BSS) ...population in the globular cluster M53. Almost 200 BSSs have been identified over the entire cluster extension. The radial distribution of these stars has been found to be bimodal (similar to that of several other clusters) with a prominent dip at image60 super(image ) from the cluster center. This value turns out to be a factor of 2 smaller than the radius of avoidance (image, the radius within which all the stars of image1.2 image have sunk to the core because of dynamical friction effects in a Hubble time). While in most of the clusters with a bimodal BSS radial distribution, image has been found to be located in the region of the observed minimum, this is the second case (after NGC 6388) where this discrepancy is noted. This evidence suggests that in a few clusters the dynamical friction seems to be somehow less efficient than expected. We have also used this database to construct the radial star density profile of the cluster; this is the most extended and accurate radial profile ever published for this cluster, including detailed star counts in the very inner region. The star density profile is reproduced by a standard King Model with an extended core (image25 super(image )) and a modest value of the concentration parameter. A deviation from the model is noted in the most external region of the cluster (at image from the center). This feature needs to be further investigated in order to address the possible presence of a tidal tail in this cluster.
Upcoming surveys will map the growth of large-scale structure with unprecented precision, improving our understanding of the dark sector of the Universe. Unfortunately, much of the cosmological ...information is encoded on small scales, where the clustering of dark matter and the effects of astrophysical feedback processes are not fully understood. This can bias the estimates of cosmological parameters, which we study here for a joint analysis of mock
Euclid
cosmic shear and
Planck
cosmic microwave background data. We use different implementations for the modelling of the signal on small scales and find that they result in significantly different predictions. Moreover, the different non-linear corrections lead to biased parameter estimates, especially when the analysis is extended into the highly non-linear regime, with the Hubble constant,
H
0
, and the clustering amplitude,
σ
8
, affected the most. Improvements in the modelling of non-linear scales will therefore be needed if we are to resolve the current tension with more and better data. For a given prescription for the non-linear power spectrum, using different corrections for baryon physics does not significantly impact the precision of
Euclid
, but neglecting these correction does lead to large biases in the cosmological parameters. In order to extract precise and unbiased constraints on cosmological parameters from
Euclid
cosmic shear data, it is therefore essential to improve the accuracy of the recipes that account for non-linear structure formation, as well as the modelling of the impact of astrophysical processes that redistribute the baryons.
