Antireflection coatings (ARC) are essential for various optical components including such made of plastics for high volume applications. However, precision coatings on plastics are rather challenging ...due to typically low adhesion of the coating to the substrate. In this work, optimization of the atomic layer deposition (ALD) processes towards conformal optical thin films of Al2O3, TiO2 and SiO2 on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has been carried out and a five-layer ARC is demonstrated. While the uncoated PMMA substrates have a reflectance of nearly 8% in the visible (VIS) spectral range, this is reduced below 1.2% for the spectral range of 420–670 nm by applying a double-side ARC. The total average reflectance is 0.7%. The optimized ALD coatings show a good adhesion to the PMMA substrates even after the climate test. Microscopic analysis on the cross-hatch areas on PMMA after the climate test indicates very good environmental stability of the ALD coatings. These results enable a possible route by ALD to deposit uniform, crack free, adhesive and environmentally durable thin film layers on sensitive thermoplastics like PMMA.
Abstract
Attosecond nonlinear polarization spectroscopy designates the subcycle-precise retrieval of the electric field of a femtosecond laser pulse together with the nonlinear polarization response ...that the laser pulse triggers in a sample. Here, we introduce a method that is all-optical and applicable to metal films. The method is called nonlinear polarization holography because it is based on the comparison of two time-domain holograms with and without a metal film on a substrate. The working principle can be understood as the time-domain analog of holographic interferometry, in which the comparison of two spatial holograms reveals changes in an object’s size and position with interferometric precision (i.e. to fractions of the wavelength). Analogously, nonlinear polarization holography provides subcycle precision (i.e. to fractions of the optical period). Nonlinear polarization holography is used here to retrieve the time-domain nonlinear response of a nanoscale iridium film. Using density matrix calculations it is shown that the knowledge of the nonlinear response with subcycle precision allows distinguishing excitation and relaxation mechanisms of low-energetic electrons.

resolution based on optical driving of CEP-sensitive ultrafast currents in a metal−dielectric heterostructure. We successfully apply the probe to obtain a 3D map of spatial changes of CEP in the vicinity of an oscillator beam focus with pulses as weak as 1 nJ. We also demonstrate CEP control in the focal volume with a spatial light modulator so that arbitrary spatial CEP sculpting could be realized.

Evidence suggests that beta-amyloid (Aβ)-induced phosphorylation/aggregation of tau protein plays a critical role in the degeneration of neurons and development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most ...common cause of dementia affecting the elderly population. Many studies have pursued a variety of small molecules, including nanoparticles conjugated with drugs to interfere with Aβ and/or tau aggregation/toxicity as an effective strategy for AD treatment. We reported earlier that FDA approved PLGA nanoparticles without any drug can attenuate Aβ aggregation/toxicity in cellular/animal models of AD. In this study, we evaluated the effects of native PLGA on Aβ seed-induced aggregation of tau protein using a variety of biophysical, structural and spectroscopic approaches. Our results show that Aβ
seeds enhanced aggregation of tau protein in the presence and absence of heparin and the effect was attenuated by native PLGA nanoparticles. Interestingly, PLGA inhibited aggregation of both 4R and 3R tau isoforms involved in the formation of neurofibrillary tangles in AD brains. Furthermore, Aβ seed-induced tau aggregation in the presence of arachidonic acid was suppressed by native PLGA. Collectively, our results suggest that native PLGA nanoparticles can inhibit the Aβ seed-induced aggregation of different tau protein isoforms highlighting their therapeutic implication in the treatment of AD.
Absorption losses and laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) are considered to be the major constraints for development of optical coatings for high-power laser optics. Such coatings require paramount ...properties, such as low losses due to optical absorption, high mechanical stability, and enhanced damage resistance, to withstand high-intensity laser pulses. In this work, heterostructures were developed by sub-nanometer thin films of SiO2 and HfO2 using the plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) technique. Thin-film characterization techniques, such as spectroscopic ellipsometry, spectrophotometry, substrate curvature measurements, X-ray reflectivity, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, were employed for extracting optical constants, residual stress, layer formation, and functional groups present in the heterostructures, respectively. These heterostructures demonstrate tunable refractive index, bandgap, and improved optical losses and LIDT properties. The films were incorporated into antireflection coatings (multilayer stacks and graded-index coatings) and the LIDT was determined at 355 nm wavelength by the R-on-1 method. Optical absorptions at the reported wavelengths were characterized using photothermal common-path interferometry and laser-induced deflection techniques.
Conversion of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides from soluble random-coil to aggregated protein enriched with β-sheet-rich intermediates has been suggested to play a role in the degeneration of neurons and ...development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. Aggregation of Aβ peptide can be prompted by a variety of environmental factors including temperature which can influence disease pathogenesis. Recently, we reported that FDA-approved unconjugated poly (D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticles can have beneficial effects in cellular and animal models of AD by targeting different facets of the Aβ axis. In this study, using biochemical, structural and spectroscopic analyses, we evaluated the effects of native PLGA on temperature-dependent Aβ aggregation and its ability to protect cultured neurons from degeneration. Our results show that the rate of spontaneous Aβ
aggregation increases with a rise in temperature from 27 to 40 °C and PLGA with 50:50 resomer potently inhibits Aβ aggregation at all temperatures, but the effect is more profound at 27 °C than at 40 °C. It appears that native PLGA, by interacting with the hydrophobic domain of Aβ
, prevents a conformational shift towards β-sheet structure, thus precluding the formation of Aβ aggregates. Additionally, PLGA triggers disassembly of matured Aβ
fibers at a faster rate at 40 °C than at 27 °C. PLGA-treated Aβ samples can significantly enhance viability of cortical cultured neurons compared to neurons treated with Aβ alone by attenuating phosphorylation of tau protein. Injection of native PLGA is found to influence the breakdown/clearance of Aβ peptide in the brain. Collectively, these results suggest that PLGA nanoparticles can inhibit Aβ aggregation and trigger disassembly of Aβ aggregates at temperatures outside the physiological range and can protect neurons against Aβ-mediated toxicity thus validating its unique therapeutic potential in the treatment of AD pathology.
Nonlinear optical phenomena enable novel photonic and optoelectronic applications. Especially, metallic nanoparticles and thin films with nonlinear optical properties offer the potential for ...micro-optical system integration. For this purpose, new nonlinear materials need to be continuously identified, investigated, and utilized for nonlinear optical applications. While noble-metal nanoparticles, nanostructures, and thin films of silver and gold have been widely studied, iridium (Ir) nanoparticles and ultrathin films have not been investigated for nonlinear optical applications yet. Here, we present a combined theoretical and experimental study on the linear and nonlinear optical properties of iridium nanoparticles deposited via atomic layer deposition (ALD). Linear optical constants, such as the effective refractive index and extinction coefficient, were evaluated at different growth stages of nanoparticle formation. Both linear and nonlinear optical properties of these Ir ALD coatings were calculated theoretically using the Maxwell Garnett theory. The third-order susceptibility of iridium nanoparticle samples was experimentally investigated using the z-scan technique. According to the experiment, for an Ir ALD coating with 45 cycles resulting in iridium nanoparticles, the experimentally determined nonlinear third-order susceptibility is about χIr(3) = (2.4 − i2.1) × 10−17 m2/V2 at the fundamental wavelength of 700 nm. The theory fitted to the experimental results predicts a 5 × 106-fold increase around 230 nm. This strong increase is due to the proximity to the Mie resonance of iridium nanoparticles.
Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is a second-order nonlinear optical process that is not allowed in media with inversion symmetry. However, due to the broken symmetry at the surface, surface SHG ...still occurs, but is generally weak. We experimentally investigate the surface SHG in periodic stacks of alternating, subwavelength dielectric layers, which have a large number of surfaces, thus enhancing surface SHG considerably. To this end, multilayer stacks of SiO
/TiO
were grown by Plasma Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition (PEALD) on fused silica substrates. With this technique, individual layers of a thickness of less than 2 nm can be fabricated. We experimentally show that under large angles of incidence (> 20 degrees) there is substantial SHG, well beyond the level, which can be observed from simple interfaces. We perform this experiment for samples with different periods and thicknesses of SiO
/TiO
and our results are in agreement with theoretical calculations.
