Aims. The chemical evolution of galaxies on a cosmological timescale is still a matter of debate despite the increasing number of available data provided by spectroscopic surveys of star-forming ...galaxies at different redshifts. The fundamental relations involving metallicity, such as the mass − metallicity relation (MZR) or the fundamental metallicity relation, give controversial results about the reality of evolution of the chemical content of galaxies at a given stellar mass. In this work we shed some light on this issue using the completeness reached by the 20 k bright sample of the zCOSMOS survey and using for the first time the nitrogen-to-oxygen ratio (N/O) as a tracer of the gas phase chemical evolution of galaxies that is independent of the star formation rate. Methods. Emission-line galaxies both in the SDSS and 20 k zCOSMOS bright survey were used to study the evolution from the local Universe of the MZR up to a redshift of ~1.32, and the relation between stellar mass and N/O (MNOR) up to a redshift of ~0.42 using the N2S2 parameter. All the physical properties derived from stellar continuum and gas emission-lines, including stellar mass, star formation rates, metallicity and N/O, were calculated in a self-consistent way over the full redshift range. Results. We confirm the trend to find lower metallicities in galaxies of a given stellar mass in a younger Universe. This trend is even observed when taking possible effects into account that are due to the observed larger median star formation rates for galaxies at higher redshifts. We also find a significant evolution of the MNOR up to z ~ 0.4. Taking the slope of the O/H vs. N/O relation into account for the secondary-nitrogen production regime, the observed evolution of the MNOR is consistent with the trends found for both the MZR and its equivalent relation using new expressions to reduce its dependence on star formation rate.
We report on the detailed analysis of a gravitationally lensed Y-band dropout, A2744_YD4, selected from deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging in the Frontier Field cluster Abell 2744. Band 7 ...observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) indicate the proximate detection of a significant 1 mm continuum flux suggesting the presence of dust for a star-forming galaxy with a photometric redshift of . Deep X-SHOOTER spectra confirms the high-redshift identity of A2744_YD4 via the detection of Ly emission at a redshift z = 8.38. The association with the ALMA detection is confirmed by the presence of O iii 88 m emission at the same redshift. Although both emission features are only significant at the 4 level, we argue their joint detection and the positional coincidence with a high-redshift dropout in the Hubble Space Telescope images confirms the physical association. Analysis of the available photometric data and the modest gravitational magnification ( ) indicates A2744_YD4 has a stellar mass of ∼2 × 109 , a star formation rate of ∼20 yr−1 and a dust mass of ∼6 × 106 . We discuss the implications of the formation of such a dust mass only after the onset of cosmic reionization.
The VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS), designed to measure 150,000 galaxy redshifts, requires a dedicated data reduction and analysis pipeline to process in a timely fashion the large amount of ...spectroscopic data being produced. This requirement has lead to the development of the VIMOS Interactive Pipeline and Graphical Interface (VIPGI), a new software package designed to simplify to a very high degree the task of reducing astronomical data obtained with VIMOS (Visible Multi–Object Spectrograph), the imaging spectrograph built by the VIRMOS Consortium for the European Southern Observatory and mounted on Unit 3 (Melipal) of the VLT (Very Large Telescope) at Paranal Observatory (Chile). VIPGI provides the astronomer with specially designed VIMOS data‐reduction functions, a VIMOS‐centric data organizer, and dedicated data browsing and plotting tools, which can be used to verify the quality and accuracy of the various stages of the data‐reduction process. The quality and accuracy of the data‐reduction pipeline are comparable to those obtained using well‐known IRAF tasks, but the speed of the data‐reduction process is significantly increased, because of the dedicated nature of VIPGI. In this paper we discuss the details of the multiobject spectroscopy (MOS) data‐reduction pipeline that has been implemented in VIPGI, as applied to the reduction of some 20,000 VVDS spectra, quantitatively assessing the accuracy of the various reduction steps. We also provide a more general overview of VIPGI capabilities, a tool that can be used for the reduction of any kind of VIMOS data.

absorbers of which three have rest equivalent width greater than 0.8 Å. With the new Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope (VLT), we detect six (75%) Mg
ii
host galaxy candidates within a radius of 30″ from the quasar LOS. Out of these six galaxy–quasar pairs, from geometrical argument, one is likely probing galactic outflows, where two are classified as “ambiguous,” two are likely probing extended gaseous disks and one pair seems to be a merger. We focus on the wind-pair and constrain the outflow using a high-resolution quasar spectra from the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph. Assuming the metal absorption to be due to ga;s flowing out of the detected galaxy through a cone along the minor axis, we find outflow velocities in the order of ≈150
(i.e., smaller than the escape velocity) with a loading factor,
, of ≈0.7. We see evidence for an open conical flow, with a low-density inner core. In the future, MUSE will provide us with about 80 multiple galaxy−quasar pairs in two dozen fields.
Observations of distant supernovae indicate that the Universe is now in a phase of accelerated expansion the physical cause of which is a mystery. Formally, this requires the inclusion of a term ...acting as a negative pressure in the equations of cosmic expansion, accounting for about 75 per cent of the total energy density in the Universe. The simplest option for this 'dark energy' corresponds to a 'cosmological constant', perhaps related to the quantum vacuum energy. Physically viable alternatives invoke either the presence of a scalar field with an evolving equation of state, or extensions of general relativity involving higher-order curvature terms or extra dimensions. Although they produce similar expansion rates, different models predict measurable differences in the growth rate of large-scale structure with cosmic time. A fingerprint of this growth is provided by coherent galaxy motions, which introduce a radial anisotropy in the clustering pattern reconstructed by galaxy redshift surveys. Here we report a measurement of this effect at a redshift of 0.8. Using a new survey of more than 10,000 faint galaxies, we measure the anisotropy parameter = 0.70 ± 0.26, which corresponds to a growth rate of structure at that time of f = 0.91 ± 0.36. This is consistent with the standard cosmological-constant model with low matter density and flat geometry, although the error bars are still too large to distinguish among alternative origins for the accelerated expansion. The correct origin could be determined with a further factor-of-ten increase in the sampled volume at similar redshift.
We present the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function (GSMF) up to z~1 from the zCOSMOS-bright 10k spectroscopic sample. We investigate the total MF and the contribution of ETGs and LTGs, defined by broad-band ...SED, morphology, spectral properties or star formation activities. We unveil a galaxy bimodality in the global MF, at least up to the z~0.55, better represented by 2 Schechter functions dominated by ETGs and LTGs, respectively. For the global population we confirm that low-mass galaxies number density increases later and faster than for massive galaxies. We find that the MF evolution at intermediate-low Mstar (logM<10.6) is mostly explained by a growth in stellar mass driven by smooth and decreasing SFHs. The low/negligible evolution at higher Mstar sets a limit of 30-15%, decreasing with redshift, to the fraction of major merging. We find that ETGs increase in number density with cosmic time faster for decreasing Mstar, with a median "building redshift" increasing with mass, in contrast with hierarchical model predictions. For LTGs we find that the number density of blue or spiral galaxies remains almost constant with cosmic time from z~1. Instead, the most extreme population of active star forming galaxies is rapidly decreasing in number density. We suggest, firstly, a transformation from blue active spiral galaxies of intermediate mass into blue quiescent and successively (1-2 Gyr after) into red passive types. The complete morphological transformation into red spheroidal galaxies, required longer time-scales or follows after 1-2 Gyr. A continuous replacement of blue galaxies is expected by low-mass active spirals growing in stellar mass. We estimate that on average ~25% of blue galaxies is transforming into red per Gyr for logM<11. We expect a negligible evolution of the global Galaxy Baryonic MF. ABRIDGED
Context. This paper presents the results obtained with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) for the core of the lensing cluster Abell 1689, as part of MUSE’s commissioning at the ESO Very ...Large Telescope. Aims. Integral-field observations with MUSE provide a unique view of the central 1 × 1 arcmin2 region at intermediate spectral resolution in the visible domain, allowing us to conduct a complete census of both cluster galaxies and lensed background sources. Methods. We performed a spectroscopic analysis of all sources found in the MUSE data cube. Two hundred and eighty-two objects were systematically extracted from the cube based on a guided-and-manual approach. We also tested three different tools for the automated detection and extraction of line emitters. Cluster galaxies and lensed sources were identified based on their spectral features. We investigated the multiple-image configuration for all known sources in the field. Results. Previous to our survey, 28 different lensed galaxies displaying 46 multiple images were known in the MUSE field of view, most of them were detected through photometric redshifts and lensing considerations. Of these, we spectroscopically confirm 12 images based on their emission lines, corresponding to 7 different lensed galaxies between z = 0.95 and 5.0. In addition, 14 new galaxies have been spectroscopically identified in this area thanks to MUSE data, with redshifts ranging between 0.8 and 6.2. All background sources detected within the MUSE field of view correspond to multiple-imaged systems lensed by A1689. Seventeen sources in total are found at z ≥ 3 based on their Lyman-α emission, with Lyman-α luminosities ranging between 40.5 ≲ log (Lyα) ≲ 42.5 after correction for magnification. This sample is particularly sensitive to the slope of the luminosity function toward the faintest end. The density of sources obtained in this survey is consistent with a steep value of α ≤ −1.5, although this result still needs further investigation. Conclusions. These results illustrate the efficiency of MUSE in characterizing lensing clusters on one hand and in studying faint and distant populations of galaxies on the other hand. In particular, our current survey of lensing clusters is expected to provide a unique census of sources responsible for the reionization in a representative volume at z ~ 4−7.
ABSTRACT In this paper we present the results of our search for and study of z 6 galaxy candidates behind the third Frontier Fields (FFs) cluster, MACS J0717.5+3745, and its parallel field, combining ...data from Hubble and Spitzer. We select 39 candidates using the Lyman break technique, for which the clear non-detection in optical make the extreme mid-z interlopers hypothesis unlikely. We also take benefit from z 6 samples selected using the previous FF data sets of Abell 2744 and MACS 0416 to improve the constraints on the properties of very high redshift objects. We compute the redshift and the physical properties such emission lines properties, star formation rate, reddening, and stellar mass for all FF objects from their spectral energy distribution using templates including nebular emission lines. We study the relationship between several physical properties and confirm the trend already observed in previous surveys for evolution of star formation rate with galaxy mass and between the size and the UV luminosity of our candidates. The analysis of the evolution of the UV luminosity function with redshift seems more compatible with an evolution of density. Moreover, no robust z ≥ 8.5 object is selected behind the cluster field and few z ∼ 9 candidates have been selected in the two previous data sets from this legacy survey, suggesting a strong evolution in the number density of galaxies between z ∼ 8 and 9. Thanks to the use of the lensing cluster, we study the evolution of the star formation rate density produced by galaxies with L > 0.03 L , and confirm the strong decrease observed between z ∼ 8 and 9.
We analyse a sample of 8 highly magnified galaxies at redshift0.6<z<1.5observedwith MUSE, exploring the resolved properties of these galaxies at sub-kiloparsec scales.Combining ...multi-bandHSTphotometry and MUSE spectra, we derive the stellarmass, global star formation rates, extinction and metallicity from multiple nebularlines, concluding that our sample is representative ofz∼1 star-forming galaxies. Wederive the 2D kinematics of these galaxies from the Oii emission and model it with anew method that accounts for lensing effects and fits multiple images simultaneously.We use these models to calculate the 2D beam-smearing correction and derive intrinsicvelocity dispersion maps. We find them to be fairly homogeneous, with relativelyconstant velocity dispersions between 15 - 80 km s−1and Gini coefficent of<∼0.3. We donot find any evidence for higher (or lower) velocity dispersions at the positions of brightstar-forming clumps. We derive resolved maps of dust attenuation and attenuation-corrected star formation rates from emission lines for two objects in the sample. We usethis information to study the relation between resolved star formation rate and velocitydispersion. We find that these quantities are not correlated, and the high velocitydispersions found for relatively low star-forming densities seems to indicate that, atsub-kiloparsec scales, turbulence in high-zdiscs is mainly dominated by gravitationalinstability rather than stellar feedback
We present the first measurements of the Probability Distribution Function (PDF) of galaxy fluctuations in the four-passes, first-epoch VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS) cone, covering 0.4x0.4 deg between ...0.4 < z < 1.5. We show that the PDF of density contrasts of the VVDS galaxies is an unbiased tracer of the underlying parent distribution up to redshift z = 1.5, on scales R = 8 and 10 h-1 Mpc. The second moment of the PDF, i.e., the rms fluctuations of the galaxy density field, is to a good approximation constant over the full redshift baseline investigated: we find that, in redshift space, s8 for galaxies brighter than McB = -20 + 5 log h has a mean value of 0.94 c 0.07 in the redshift interval 0.7 < z < 1.5. The third moment, i.e., the skewness, increases with cosmic time: we find that the probability of having underdense regions is greater at z 6 0.7 than it was at z 6 1.5. By comparing the PDF of galaxy density contrasts with the theoretically predicted PDF of mass fluctuations we infer the redshift-, density- and scale-dependence of the biasing function b(z,d,R) between galaxy and matter overdensities up to redshift z = 1.5. Our results can be summarized as follows: i) the galaxy bias is an increasing function of redshift: evolution is marginal up to z 6 0.8 and more pronounced for z QQQ ? 0.8; ii) the formation of bright galaxies is inhibited below a characteristic mass-overdensity threshold whose amplitude increases with redshift and luminosity; iii) the biasing function is non linear in all the redshift bins investigated with non-linear effects of the order of a few to 610% on scales > 5 h-1 Mpc. By subdividing the sample according to galaxy luminosity and colors, we also show that: iv) brighter galaxies are more strongly biased than less luminous ones at every redshift and the dependence of biasing on luminosity at z 6 0.8 is in good agreement with what is observed in the local Universe; v) red objects are systematically more biased than blue objects at all cosmic epochs investigated, but the relative bias between red and blue objects is constant as a function of redshift in the interval 0.7 < z < 1.5, and its value (brel 6 1.4) is similar to what is found at z 6 0.
