Grade 5 titanium discs with four different surface topographies were subdivided into 3 groups: argon-plasma; ultraviolet light, and no treatment. Cell morphology and adhesion tests were performed at 20 min, 24 h, and 72 h.
Qualitative observation of the surfaces performed at the SEM was in accordance with the anticipated features. Roughness values ranged from smooth (MAC Sa = 0.2) to very rough (XA Sa = 21). At 20 min, all the untreated surfaces presented hemispherical cells with reduced filopodia, while the cells on treated samples were more spread with broad lamellipodia. However, these differences in spreading behavior disappeared at 24 h and 72 h. Argon-plasma, but not UV, significantly increased the number of fibroblasts independently of the surface type but only at 20 min. Statistically, there was no surface in combination with a treatment that favored a greater cellular adhesion.
Data showed potential biological benefits of treating implant abutment surfaces with the plasma of argon in relation to early-stage cell adhesion.

A total of 182 patients with known breast lesions and that underwent Contrast-Enhanced Mammography were enrolled in this retrospective study. The reference standard was pathology (118 malignant lesions and 64 benign lesions). A total of 837 textural metrics were extracted by manually segmenting the region of interest from both craniocaudally (CC) and mediolateral oblique (MLO) views. Non-parametric Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test, receiver operating characteristic, logistic regression and tree-based machine learning algorithms were used. The Adaptive Synthetic Sampling balancing approach was used and a feature selection process was implemented.
In univariate analysis, the classification of malignant versus benign lesions achieved the best performance when considering the original_gldm_DependenceNonUniformity feature extracted on CC view (accuracy of 88.98%). An accuracy of 83.65% was reached in the classification of grading, whereas a slightly lower value of accuracy (81.65%) was found in the classification of the presence of the hormone receptor; the features extracted were the original_glrlm_RunEntropy and the original_gldm_DependenceNonUniformity, respectively. The results of multivariate analysis achieved the best performances when using two or more features as predictors for classifying malignant versus benign lesions from CC view images (max test accuracy of 95.83% with a non-regularized logistic regression). Considering the features extracted from MLO view images, the best test accuracy (91.67%) was obtained when predicting the grading using a classification-tree algorithm. Combinations of only two features, extracted from both CC and MLO views, always showed test accuracy values greater than or equal to 90.00%, with the only exception being the prediction of the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, where the best performance (test accuracy of 89.29%) was obtained with the random forest algorithm.
The results confirm that the identification of malignant breast lesions and the differentiation of histological outcomes and some molecular subtypes of tumors (mainly positive hormone receptor tumors) can be obtained with satisfactory accuracy through both univariate and multivariate analysis of textural features extracted from Contrast-Enhanced Mammography images.
Abstract High-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC) is the most lethal gynecologic neoplasm, with five-year survival rate below 30%. Early disease detection is of utmost importance to improve HGSOC ...cure rate. Sera from 168 HGSOC patients and 65 healthy controls were gathered together from two independent collections and stratified into a training set, for miRNA marker identification, and a validation set, for data validation. An innovative statistical approach for microarray data normalization was developed to identify differentially expressed miRNAs. Signature validation in both the training and validation sets was performed by quantitative Real Time PCR (RT-qPCR). In both the training and validation sets, miR-1246 , miR-595 and miR-2278 emerged significantly over expressed in the sera of HGSOC patients compared to healthy controls. Receiver Operating Characteristic curve analysis revealed miR-1246 as the best diagnostic biomarker, with a sensitivity of 87%, a specificity of 77% and an accuracy of 84%. This study is the first step in the identification of circulating miRNAs with diagnostic relevance for HGSOC. According to its specificity and sensitivity, circulating miR-1246 levels are worthy to be further investigated as potential diagnostic biomarker for HGSOC.
The search for new energy sources and the exploitation of renewable energies is moving on various fronts with the awareness of having to modify the abuse of fossil fuels. In these terms, the biomass ...gasification process is recognised as a sustainable energy production technology which, in addition, can also contribute to a circular economy. The study presents an Italian case study of a pilot micro-trigeneration plant based on the gasification of wood chips and residual lignocellulosic biomass. The pilot plant was designed to meet the demand for electricity, domestic hot water, heating and cooling of a municipal office. Using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) techniques this study provides an estimation of resource consumption and emissions to air, water, and the soil of energy recovery from residual biomass. Results point out that greenhouse gas emissions are very low, thus biomass can consider a renewable source and its use represents an attractive sustainable alternative to fossil fuel.
Evidences from animal models seem to suggest that minimally invasive surgery may enhance cisplatin diffusion when the drug is administered in the context of post-operative hyperthermic ...intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). The present study evaluates the cisplatin pharmacokinetic profile in a prospective series of women with platinum sensitive recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer treated with open secondary cytoreductive surgery (O-SCS) or minimally-invasive secondary cytoreductive surgery (MI-SCS).

We demonstrate for the first time that minimally invasive route enhances cisplatin peritoneal tissue uptake during HIPEC, further evaluations are needed to confirm the correlation between peritoneal cisplatin levels after HIPEC and survival.

Moreover, the rate of inappropriate drug prescription according to eCrCl and its impact on outcomes were described.
Data were obtained from "REgistro POliterapie SIMI" (REPOSI), a prospective observational register enrolling hospitalized patients aged ≥ 65 years. Patients enrolled from 2010-2016 with available data to calculate eCrCl according to the Cockcroft-Gault formula were included in this analysis.
A total of 5046 patients were available for analysis. Among these, we found an eCrCl of 45-59 mL/min in 1163 patients (23.0%), an eCrCl of 30-44 mL/min in 1128 (22.4%), an eCrCl of 15-29 mL/min in 702 (13.9%), and an eCrCl < 15 mL/min in 152 (3.0%), with several clinical factors associated with decreasing eCrCl. During follow-up, a progressively higher risk for all-cause death, cardiovascular (CV) death, any death/re-hospitalization, and CV death/re-hospitalization was found across the renal function classes. Among patients with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease, and heart failure, 476 (10.9%) were inappropriately prescribed medications according to eCrCl. During follow-up, inappropriate prescription was associated with increased risk of all-cause death (odds ratio OR 1.49, 95% confidence interval CI 1.13-1.97) and any death/re-hospitalization (OR 1.30, 95% CI 1.03-1.63).
In older hospitalized patients, impaired eCrCl is prevalent and associated with several factors, polypharmacy in particular. Patients with reduced eCrCl have a higher risk of major clinical outcomes, and > 10% of them are prescribed an inappropriate drug, with a higher risk for major clinical outcomes.
