The purpose of this study was to evaluate shade matching ability of dental professionals and students using the VITA 3D-Master shade guide.
A hundred and twenty participants have been assigned to one ...of four groups as follows: specialists in prosthodontics (SPs), residents in prosthodontics (RPs), dental technicians (DTs) and dental students (DSs). The Toothguide Training Box (TTB) was used to test the participants' shade-matching ability based on using 3 exercises and a final test. The mistakes were recorded during the exercises and mistake ratios (MR) were calculated. Time, scores, and color difference values (ΔE) were recorded and calculated. The one-way ANOVA was used to analyze the differences, and multiple regression analyses were used to evaluate the relationship in mean MRs, time, score and ΔE values between the groups.
Male participants needed significantly greater amount of time than females to complete the final test (
<0.05). Male SPs achieved a significantly lower percentage of mistake ratios in second exercise than RPs (
<0.05), needed significantly less time than DSs to complete the final test and achieved significantly higher scores than RPs (
<0.05). Female SPs assessed the highest and DSs and RPs the lowest color differences (
<0.05). The results obtained from the exercises and final tests highly affected the amount of estimated color difference in both male and female groups (by 78% and 76%, respectively).
Within the population tested, gender of the participants showed a significant impact on quality of shade matching of dental professionals and students.
Sports activities may induce long-lasting changes in mandibular trajectories. The aim was to compare condylar and mandibular movements in athletes with orofacial injuries with values measured in ...non-injured athletes. The group of 132 athletes without mandibular injury included asymptomatic athletes with a history of a blow to the right side (N = 43) and the group included asymptomatic athletes with a history of a blow to the left side (N = 41) of the mandible. The injured athletes suffered from stiffness/pain and/or limitation of jaw movements. The symptoms disappeared shortly after the injury. Athletes with a history of injury have smaller mean values of Bennett angle on the side of impact, and Bennett angle on the opposite side is greater than the mean found in non-injured athletes. Significantly smaller Bennett angle values in athletes with a history of a blow to one side of the mandible are due to the adaptability of the orofacial system. The larger Bennett angle on the opposite side of the injury is also due to the adaptive mechanism of the TMJ. Clinical Relevance: An individualized approach to TMJ values is mandatory in restorative procedures in every patient, especially in patients with a history of trauma to the orofacial system.
The aim of this study was to investigate the quality of the bond between the acrylic tooth and the denture base after compressive loading of acrylic complete dentures regarding the reinforcement of ...the denture base and different types of treatment of the surfaces of the acrylic teeth.
The sample consisted of 4 pairs of acrylic complete dentures, two pairs of which had denture base reinforcement (carbon fibres) and two pairs without base reinforcement. The surfaces of the acrylic teeth that came into contact with the acrylic dough during the flasking process were treated in four ways (no treatment, roughening, monomer coating and mechanical-chemical treatment). A one-factor analysis of variance was used to investigate the influence of the reinforcement of the base of complete dentures and the different types of treatment of the surface of the acrylic tooth on the quality of the bond (statistical significance level of p ˂ 0.01).
The result of the one-factor analysis of variance (Welch's F-test) shows that there is a statistically significant difference between the arithmetic means of the measured gap sizes (ranged between 40 and 120 microns) in relation to the different types of treatment of the surface of the acrylic tooth.
The microscopic analysis showed that the size of the gap at the interface between the acrylic tooth and the base of the complete dentures was influenced by the mechanical-chemical treatment method of the surface of the acrylic tooth, while the reinforcement of the base with carbon fibres had no effect on the quality of the bond.
Background/Aim. Dental appearance plays an important role in practically all personal social interactions. The main factors that define the dental appearance are tooth colour, shape and position, ...quality of restoration, and the general position of the teeth in arch, especially in the anterior region. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of dental status (tooth shape, fracture, dental and prosthetic restorations and presence of plaque) on patient''s satisfaction with the dental appearance, controlling for the age and gender. Methods. A total of 700 Caucasian subjects (439 women) aged 18?86 (median 45 years) participated in the cross-sectional study. Study included clinical examination and self-administrated questionnaire based on selfperceived aesthetics and satisfaction with the appearance of their maxillary anterior teeth. Results. A regression analysis demonstrated that presence of dental plaque, tooth fracture, composite fillings and crowns had significant independent contribution and were negative predictors of satisfaction with teeth appearance. Participants with presence of plaque on upper teeth (p < 0.001), fractures (p = 0.005), composite fillings (p < 0.001) and crowns (p = 0.032) were less satisfied than those without it. Model explains 12% or variance of general satisfaction with the appearance of maxillary frontal teeth (p < 0.001) and the major contributors are composite fillings (5.3%) and plaque (3.2%). Tooth shape, age and gender were not significant predictors of satisfaction. Conclusion. Satisfaction with the teeth appearance is under the influence of many factors with significant negative influence of presence of dental plaque, fractures, composite restorations, and crowns.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine is there ...alteration of condylar path and frontal guidance values in athletes with and without orofacial injuries. The sample consists of 34 athletes who were divided into two groups (Control and Examines group). "Control group" consists of 11 athletes without data of macrotrauma of the stomatognatic system (athletes who didn’t get blow to the face). The second group is "Examines group" witch consists of 23 athletes with macrotrauma (athletes who get blow to the face), 11 of them were athletes with macrotrauma on the right side of jaw and 12 of them were athletes with macrotrauma on the left side of jaw. Athletes with anamnestic blow to the jaws, immediately after injury, have had stiffness/pain of masticatory muscles, pain in region of TMJ, and limitation of jaw movements. But all symptoms diminished and finally were gone after some days or weeks after injury. In time of investigation all of them were completely without any symptom of temporomandibular dysfunction according to RDC/TMD protocol, and were completely satisfied with function of their stomatognathic system. Athletes with macrotrauma have limitation of Bennett angle on the one side while on the opposite side Bennett angle is larger than the average values given in literature. As conclusion, if athletes with macrotrauma need prosthetic therapy, without individual articulator adjustment, prosthodontics work can cause iatrogenic interference. That interference during time may cause temporomandibular dysfunction. All patients need individual approach to their stomatognatic system, and only in that way damage to the system can be avoided.

Background
General dentists (GDs) should be aware of the symptoms, signs, diagnoses and treatment of medical emergencies in paediatric patients.
Aim
To evaluate the knowledge of GDs in coping with ...medical emergencies, and to identify whether they are confident to diagnose and treat medical emergencies in paediatric patients.
Design
The questionnaire was conducted immediately before the beginning of national dental meetings and continuing education seminars in Croatia, attended by the GDs, in order to obtain a representative sample.
Results
Of a total of 498 GDs who returned the questionnaire with valid data, 51.2% reported that a medical history was regularly taken. A high proportion (81.3%) of the GDs had never received any basic life support (BLS) training and education for paediatric patients during their undergraduate studies. After graduation, this value rose to 86.1% of GDs. However, more than two‐thirds (68.7%) had experienced some emergency situation in their practice. The most frequent emergency was vasovagal syncope (83.6%) and the most rare was cardiac arrest (8.2%). One‐fifth (20.5%) of GDs experienced some emergency but could not make a diagnosis. The more BLS training undergone by a GD, the more self‐confident s/he felt in an emergency situation.
Conclusions
Most GDs have a lack of knowledge to cope with medical emergencies in paediatric patients, and do not feel confident to diagnose and treat emergency situations in children. It is suggested that adequate training and education should be provided for all GDs to address this shortcoming.

The period has been marked by dedicated work of many generations of physicians, numerous professional and scientific achievements of the medical profession. During their mandates, many presidents guided and directed the activities of the CMA, fervently discussed and fought for progress and prosperity and proudly celebrated important anniversaries and events. Lijednicki vjesnik, the CMA journal, has always been an important factor in the education of its readers, as well as for professional and scientific advancement of many colleagues.
