Etnografsko istrazivanje obuhvaca izvedbu programa u raznim hrvatskim gradovima te zavrsni dogadaj identitetnog oslikavanja Republike Hrvatske u osvit simbolickog pristupanja Europskoj uniji ostvaren u sluzbenom programu svecane proslave. Rad propituje strategije reprezentacijskih odgovora, to jest kontrareakcija na simbolicke poticaje "susreta" Hrvatske i Europske unije tijekom procesa pristupanja. // ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: The paper deals with different ways of institutional and spontaneous self-representation of the Republic of Croatia on the path to joining the European Union. It is based on the ethnography of EU Bus Croatia Programme, which was launched by the Delegation of the European Commission to the Republic of Croatia in 2007. Ethnographic research encompassed the programme implementation in different Croatian cities and the final event, including the creation of Croatian visual identity on the eve of the symbolic accession to the European Union, as a part of the programme of the official celebration ceremony. The paper questions representational speeches' strategies, i.e. the counter response to the symbolic promptings which were calling for the 'meeting' of Croatia and the European Union throughout the accession process.

In this paper the authors discuss three sets of issues. The first relates to the recent economic crisis, as well as the transitional crisis that preceded it, and is illustrated on the example of the ...devastation of the Sisak Ironworks. The collapse of the Croatian industry is explained primarily as a bankruptcy of political, ideological and economic values from the socialist period and only secondarily as the result of the global economic crisis. The second set of issues is revealed in the interviews with the employees of the Sisak Ironworks who were laid off, whose narratives mostly conceptualize their life without work, who talk about their life while they were still employed, and who consider their future life and work. In all these interviews the word “hope” is repeated as a kind of a leitmotif. The notion of hope is, in fact, the object of the final set of issues. In recent years, within the humanities and social sciences, the concept of “hope” was given considerable importance in research, especially in the analysis of individual and collective traumatic experience, such as losing one’s job. Thus, the authors present some of the more important theoretical articles about hope, and problematize them based on their own field notes.
Remembrance is seen as the product of a community of people which resembles and evokes the most precious values of collective identity and communicates contingent needs of the present. In contrast to ...collective-memory-practices, this paper aims to explore individual practices of remembering performed by three Croatian artists. The paper explores performative projects of Marijan Crtalic - Project Target - where the socialist sculptural heritage gets to be reinterpreted by military teleologies; then Sinisa Labrovic, whose project restages partisan pieta vulnerability, and Igor Grubic and his project of redressing socialist sculptures. The projects point to the interconnectedness of past and present, memory and politics, collective versus individual via art. Acting as individuals, those artists have tangled the questions of how societies tend to renegotiate the meaning of art coming from the socialist past alongside the renegotiation of memory. Re-evoking socialism in their work, those three artists stand for individual interpellation of collective amnesia pointing to the process of remembrance as highly contextual practice placed in-between individual responsibility, political activism and humanism in general. By trying to re-animate or make sculptures re-personalize human figures, those art projects are meant to criticize, comment and envision the existing usage of cultural memory as well as to offer post-utopian insights on socialist and transitional utopia.
Intervencije u javnim prostorima Marijana Crtalića, Siniše Labrovića i ...Igora Grubića adresirale su tri lokaliteta – Sisak, Sinj i Zagreb – i tri spomeničke “cjeline” socijalizma u ovim prostorima. Njihovi projekti ukazuju na povezanost prošlosti i sadašnjosti, sjećanja i politike, kolektivnoga i individualnoga u tretiranju spomeničke baštine socijalizma. Njihove akcije evociranja kolektivnog odnosa prema socijalizmu postaju individualne prakse komentiranja kolektivne amnezije ukazujući na procese sjećanja kao aktivnosti kontekstualizirane individualnom odgovornošću, političkim aktivizmom i humanizmom.
The paper explores the work of one of the first Croatian women ethnographer Kata Jajncerova. Although a women of the previous century and a peasant women of limited education destined to become the ...first ethnographic sight witness, Kata Jajncerova stands as a cornerstone in nativistic teleologies of nation formation, as well as a scholarly exemplar of an early self-explanatory `native' ethnographic correspondent. The aim of the paper is to frame the obsessive topics and techniques of Jajncerova's authority. The paper focuses on the mechanisms by which a native subject wishes for and constructs the emancipation of the peasantry from the epistemic obliteration by dominant political narratives-both by introducing the idea of voicing the experience and by solidifying a written to become a written testimony of the folk.
