In this paper the authors discuss three sets of issues. The first relates to the recent economic crisis, as well as the transitional crisis that preceded it, and is illustrated on the example of the ...devastation of the Sisak Ironworks. The collapse of the Croatian industry is explained primarily as a bankruptcy of political, ideological and economic values from the socialist period and only secondarily as the result of the global economic crisis. The second set of issues is revealed in the interviews with the employees of the Sisak Ironworks who were laid off, whose narratives mostly conceptualize their life without work, who talk about their life while they were still employed, and who consider their future life and work. In all these interviews the word 'hope' is repeated as a kind of a leitmotif. The notion of hope is, in fact, the object of the final set of issues. In recent years, within the humanities and social sciences, the concept of 'hope' was given considerable importance in research, especially in the analysis of individual and collective traumatic experience, such as losing one's job. Thus, the authors present some of the more important theoretical articles about hope, and problematize them based on their own field notes. //ABSTRACT IN CROATIAN: Autorice u clanku otvaraju tri problemska cvorista.
The city is the place of multiple meanings subjected to social performances. This article questions the static perception of the city which is seen as the given & urbanistically completed set of ...meanings & discusses the ways in which the city adjusts to the demands of human imagination -- cultural, social & political. The article observes the ways in which political imagery, be it discursive or concrete, is inscribed & embedded into the city. Here the article uses the concept of Svetlana Born (2001) & her discussions on the 'embedding' of the imagery into the physical body of the city. This article specifically deals with the ideologically motivated yearnings which were embedded in the urban landscape of the town of Sisak in the negotiations of socialist & post-socialist ideology. Using the example of the ways in which socialist monuments were treated in the last seventeen years, which were seen as the period of the stronger-symbolization, the author pointed to the processes of remembrance which were efficiently modified through public discourse. The socialist symbolic capital of monuments was questioned though the linguistic practices of neglect, aggression & hate & materialized in the ways the space was used. References.
This article is the contribution to better understanding of the ethnographic work of Vid Vuletić Vukasović. Firstly, this article puts Vukasović within the framework of dominant ethnological theories ...of the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, which marked the beginnings of European and Croatian ethnology. This text is trying to analyse the idea of salvation ethnology and its impact on the rhetoric of first Croatian ethnologists, as well as to argument its universal rhetorical value in Anglo-Saxon anthropology and European ethnology. The article is following the development of institutionalization of ethnology/anthropology in Croatia and abroad, and points to the related methodological directions towards the preservation of material and non-material culture of native peoples, and to the continual conceptual attempts towards the creation of an organic cultural identification of the investigated cultures. The article emphasizes the long-term existence of the literary notion of salvation in ethnology/anthropology, and, as a consequence of that, the insistence on the strength and importance of the reconstruction of authenticity of the cultures under research. In the same time, the text outlines the concept of ethnological utopias, and searches for the common name for the static perception of the culture life, which was dominant in the early ethnographic discourse. Special attention is given to the work of Vid Vuletić Vukasović, a Croatian ethnologist, whose institutional links with the Academy of Science and Art, Zagreb, were reconstructed through his correspondence with the members of the editorial board of Zbornik za narodni život i običaje (Journal of folk life and customs). The article is also trying to establish to what extent did the conflict between Vukasović and Antun Radić, who was then the president of the editorial board of the Journal of folk life and customs, influence the bleak reception Vuletić had in early overviews of Croatian ethnology, and his professional orientation to different ethnological institutions and publishers in other South Slavic countries.
