Abstract
Background
Immunization to prevent infectious diseases is a core strategy to improve childhood health as well as survival. It remains a challenge for some African countries to attain the ...required childhood immunization coverage. We aim at identifying individual barriers confronting parents/caretakers, providers, and health systems that hinder childhood immunization coverage in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Method
This systematic review searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science and EMBASE. We restricted to published articles in English that focused on childhood immunization barriers in sub-Saharan Africa from January 1988 to December 2019. We excluded studies if: focused on barriers to immunization for children in other regions of the world, studied adult immunization barriers; studies not available on the university library, they were editorial, reports, reviews, supplement, and bulletins. Study designs included were cross-sectional, second-hand data analysis; and case control.
Results
Of the 2652 items identified, 48 met inclusion criteria. Parents/caretakers were the most common subjects. Nine articles were of moderate and 39 were of high methodological quality. Nine studies analyzed secondary data; 36 used cross-sectional designs and three employed case control method. Thirty studies reported national immunization coverage of key vaccines for children under one, eighteen did not. When reported, national immunization coverage of childhood vaccines is reported to be low. Parents/caretaker’ barriers included lack of knowledge of immunization, distance to access point, financial deprivation, lack of partners support, and distrust in vaccines and immunization programs. Other associated factors for low vaccine rates included the number of off-springs, lifestyle, migration, occupation and parent’s forgetfulness, inconvenient time and language barrier. Barriers at health system level cited by healthcare providers included limited human resources and inadequate infrastructures to maintain the cold chain and adequate supply of vaccines.
Conclusion
In this review we identified more thoroughly the parents/caretakers’ barriers than those of providers and health systems. Factors that influenced decisions to get children vaccinated were mainly their gender, beliefs, socio-culture factors in the communities in which they live. Thus it is vital that immunization programs consider these barriers and address the people and societies in their communities across sub-Saharan Africa.
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can enhance drought tolerance in plants, whereas little is known regarding AMF contribution to sucrose and proline metabolisms under drought stress (DS). In this ...study, Funneliformis mosseae and Paraglomus occultum were inoculated into trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata) under well watered and DS. Although the 71-days DS notably (P < 0.05) inhibited mycorrhizal colonization, AMF seedlings showed significantly (P < 0.05) higher plant growth performance and leaf relative water content, regardless of soil water status. AMF inoculation significantly (P < 0.05) increased leaf sucrose, glucose and fructose concentration under DS, accompanied with a significant increase of leaf sucrose phosphate synthase, neutral invertase, and net activity of sucrose-metabolized enzymes and a decrease in leaf acid invertase and sucrose synthase activity. AMF inoculation produced no change in leaf ornithine-δ-aminotransferase activity, but significantly (P < 0.05) increased leaf proline dehydrogenase activity and significantly (P < 0.05) decreased leaf both Δ
-pyrroline-5-carboxylate reductase and Δ
-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase activity, resulting in lower proline accumulation in AMF plants under DS. Our results therefore suggest that AMF strongly altered leaf sucrose and proline metabolism through regulating sucrose- and proline-metabolized enzyme activities, which is important for osmotic adjustment of the host plant.
Tetrastigma hemsleyanum Diels et Gilg is a valuable medicinal herb, whose main bioactive constituents are flavonoids. Chilling sensitivity is the dominant environmental factor limiting growth and ...development of the plants. But the mechanisms of cold sensitivity in this plant are still unclear. Also, not enough information on genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis in T. hemsleyanum is available to understand the mechanisms of its physiological and pharmaceutical effects.
The electrolyte leakage, POD activity, soluble protein, and MDA content showed a linear sustained increase under cold stress. The critical period of cold damage in T. hemsleyanum was from 12 h to 48 h. Expression profiles revealed 18,104 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) among these critical time points. Most of the cold regulated DEGs were early-response genes. A total of 114 unigenes were assigned to the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway. Fourteen genes most likely to encode flavonoid biosynthetic enzymes were identified. Flavonols of T. hemsleyanum might play a crucial role in combating cold stress. Genes encoding PAL, 4CL, CHS, ANR, FLS, and LAR were significantly up-regulated by cold stress, which could result in a significant increase in crucial flavonols (catechin, epicatechin, rutin, and quercetin) in T. hemsleyanum.
Overall, our results show that the expression of genes related to flavonol biosynthesis as well as flavonol content increased in T. hemsleyanum under cold stress. These findings provide valuable information regarding the transcriptome changes in response to cold stress and give a clue for identifying candidate genes as promising targets that could be used for improving cold tolerance via molecular breeding. The study also provides candidate genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis and may be useful for clarifying the biosynthetic pathway of flavonoids in T. hemsleyanum.

is in agreement to within ∼50 K compared to the previous study determined by APOGEE observations, and the SLAM M/H agrees within 0.12 dex compared to the APOGEE observation. We also set up a SLAM model trained by the BT-Settl atmospheric model with random uncertainties (in cross validation) to 60 K and agreeing within ∼90 K compared to previous studies.
This study aimed to investigate the associations between the clinical characteristics and effectiveness of anti-PD-1 inhibitors in patients with EGFR-sensitive mutations, aiming to identify the ...potential subgroup of patients who might benefit from anti-PD-1 inhibitor treatment. Patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harboring epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-sensitive mutations who received subsequent anti-PD-1 inhibitors in combination with chemotherapy/antiangiogenic agents or alone after progression to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) were screened. Clinical characteristics, including hematological parameters, were investigated for potential correlations with clinical outcomes. Subgroup and multivariate analyses were used for further confirmation of the relationship. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox survival regression models using the log-rank test were used for progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) assessments between the groups. Multiple regression analysis was performed using the standard regression coefficient values. The Wilcoxon test was used for the analysis of the variation in NLR. P ≤ 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. This study was a retrospective study. Twenty-two patients met the inclusion criteria and were included in the study. The median PFS was 3.05 months (95% CI, 2.9-10.2 months). The median OS was 7.30 months (95% CI, 5.2-18.1 months). PFS in low neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR ≤ 4) was significantly longer than high NLR (NLR > 4, 5.7 months versus 2.0 months, HR, 0.35, 95% CI, 0.08-0.63, P = 0.0083). The OS in the low NLR group was also significantly better than that in the high NLR group (OS, 21.3 months versus 5.0 months, HR, 0.33; 95% CI, 0.09-0.74; P = 0.0163). In the multivariate analysis, NLR was the only significant factor for OS benefits (β = 3.535, 95% CI, 1.175-10.636, P = 0.025). Further investigation revealed that front-line TKIs exposure may contribute to the elevation or decrease of NLR, and finally lead to different efficacy outcomes by anti-PD-1 inhibitors. The findings suggest that a portion of advanced NSCLC patients with low NLR characteristics (NLR ≤ 4), even those harboring EGFR-sensitive mutations, could benefit from anti-PD-1 inhibitors as further line treatment after progression to EGFR-TKIs.

Pathological features of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) include alterations in the structure and function of neurons as well as of myelin sheaths. Accumulated evidence shows that aerobic type of exercise ...can enhance neuroplasticity in mouse models of AD. However, whether and how aerobic exercise can affect myelin sheath repair and neuroprotection in the AD models remains unclear. In this study we tested the hypotheses that 1) myelin structural alterations in 3xTg-AD mice would be related to abnormalities in oligodendrocyte lineage cells, resulting in impaired learning and memory, and 2) a 6-month aerobic exercise intervention would have beneficial effects on such alterations. Two-month-old male 3xTg-AD mice were randomly assigned to a control (AC) or an exercise (AE) group, and age-matched male C57BL/6;129 mice were also randomly assigned to a normal control (NC) or an exercise (NE) group, with n = 12 in each group. Mice in the exercise groups were trained on a motor-drive treadmill, 60 min per day, 5 days per week for 6 months. Cognitive function was assessed at the end of the intervention period. Then, brain specimens were obtained for assessments of morphological and oligodendrocyte lineage cell changes. The results of electron microscopy showed that myelin ultrastructure demonstrated a higher percentage of loose and granulated myelin sheath around axons in the temporal lobe in the AC, as compared with the NC group, along with greater cognitive dysfunction at 8-months of age. These differences were accompanied by significantly greater myelin basic protein (MBP) expression and less neuron-glial antigen-2 (NG2) protein and mRNA levels in the AC, compared to the NC. However, there were no significant between-group differences in the G-ratio (the ratio of axon diameter to axon plus myelin sheath diameter) and 2′,3′-cyclic-nucleotide 3′-phosphodiesterase (CNPase) protein and mRNA levels. The aerobic exercise ameliorated cognitive deterioration and appeared to keep components of myelin sheath and oligodendrocyte precursor cells stabilized, resulting in a decrease in the percentage of loose and granulated myelin sheath and MBP protein, and an increase in NG2 protein and mRNA levels in the AE group. Therefore, the 6-month exercise intervention demonstrated beneficial effects on myelin lesions, abnormal differentiation of oligodendrocytes and general brain function in the 3xTg-AD mice, providing further insights into the role of aerobic exercise in management of neurodegeneration in AD by maintaining intact myelination.

Powdery mildew, caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt), is one of the most destructive diseases that pose a great threat to wheat production. Wheat landraces represent a rich source of ...powdery mildew resistance. Here, we report the map-based cloning of powdery mildew resistance gene Pm24 from Chinese wheat landrace Hulutou. It encodes a tandem kinase protein (TKP) with putative kinase-pseudokinase domains, designated WHEAT TANDEM KINASE 3 (WTK3). The resistance function of Pm24 was validated by transgenic assay, independent mutants, and allelic association analyses. Haplotype analysis revealed that a rare 6-bp natural deletion of lysine-glycine codons, endemic to wheat landraces of Shaanxi Province, China, in the kinase I domain (Kin I) of WTK3 is critical for the resistance function. Transgenic assay of WTK3 chimeric variants revealed that only the specific two amino acid deletion, rather than any of the single or more amino acid deletions, in the Kin I of WTK3 is responsible for gaining the resistance function of WTK3 against the Bgt fungus.
Humans have been committed to space exploration and to find the next planet suitable for human survival. The construction of an ecosystem that adapts to the long-term survival of human beings in ...space stations or other planets would be the first step. The space plant cultivation system is the key component of an ecosystem, which will produce food, fiber, edible oil and oxygen for future space inhabitants. Many plant experiments have been carried out under a stimulated or real environment of altered gravity, including at microgravity (0 g), Moon gravity (0.17 g) and Mars gravity (0.38 g). How plants sense gravity and change under stress environment of altered gravity were summarized in this review. However, many challenges remain regarding human missions to the Moon or Mars. Our group conducted the first plant experiment under real Moon gravity (0.17 g) in 2019. One of the cotton seeds successfully germinated and produced a green seedling, which represents the first green leaf produced by mankind on the Moon.
As one of the most widely researched consequence of traumatic events, the prevalence of post-traumatic stress symptoms among people exposed to the trauma resulting from coronavirus disease 2019 ...(COVID-19) outbreak varies greatly across studies. This review aimed at examining the pooled prevalence of post-traumatic stress symptoms among people exposed to the trauma resulting from COVID-19 outbreak.
Systematic searches of databases were conducted for literature published on PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, PsycArticle, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure until October 14, 2020. Statistical analyses were performed using R software (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42020180309).
A total of 106,713 people exposed to the trauma resulting from the COVID-19 outbreak were identified in the 76 articles, of which 33,810 were reported with post-traumatic stress symptoms. The pooled prevalence of post-traumatic stress symptoms among people exposed to the trauma resulting from COVID-19 outbreak was 28.34%, with a 95% confidence interval of 23.03-34.32%. Subgroup analysis indicated that older age, male and bigger sample size were associated with higher prevalence of post-traumatic stress symptoms. After controlling for other factors, the results of meta-regression showed that the influence of gender and sample size on prevalence is no longer significant.
Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were very common among people exposed to the trauma resulting from COVID-19 outbreak. Further research is needed to explore more possible risk factors for post-traumatic stress symptoms and identify effective strategies for preventing PTSD-related symptoms among people exposed to the trauma resulting from COVID-19 outbreak.
