Aims. We investigate the fueling and the feedback of nuclear activity in the nearby (D = 14 Mpc) Seyfert 2 barred galaxy NGC 1068 by studying the distribution and kinematics of molecular gas in the ...torus and its connections to the host galaxy disk. Methods. We used the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA ) to image the emission of a set of molecular gas tracers in the circumnuclear disk (CND) and the torus of the galaxy using the CO(2–1), CO(3–2), and HCO+(4–3) lines and their underlying continuum emission with high spatial resolutions (0.03″ − 0.09″ ≃ 2 − 6 pc). These transitions, which span a wide range of physical conditions of molecular gas (n(H2)⊂103 − 107 cm−3), are instrumental in revealing the density radial stratification and the complex kinematics of the gas in the torus and its surroundings. Results. The ALMA images resolve the CND as an asymmetric ringed disk of D ≃ 400 pc in size and ≃1.4 × 108 M⊙ in mass. The CND shows a marked deficit of molecular gas in its central ≃130 pc region. The inner edge of the ring is associated with the presence of edge-brightened arcs of NIR polarized emission, which are identified with the current working surface of the ionized wind of the active galactic nucleus (AGN). ALMA proves the existence of an elongated molecular disk/torus in NGC 1068 of Mtorusgas ≃ 3 × 105 M⊙ M torus gas ≃ 3 × 10 5 M ⊙ $ M_{\mathrm{torus}}^{\mathrm{gas}}\simeq3\times10^{5}\,M_{{\odot}} $ , which extends over a large range of spatial scales D ≃ 10 − 30 pc around the central engine. The new observations evidence the density radial stratification of the torus: the HCO+(4–3) torus, with a full size DHCO+(4 − 3) = 11 ± 0.6 pc, is a factor of between two and three smaller than its CO(2–1) and CO(3–2) counterparts, which have full sizes of DCO(3 − 2) = 26 ± 0.6 pc and DCO(2 − 1) = 28 ± 0.6 pc, respectively. This result brings into light the many faces of the molecular torus. The torus is connected to the CND through a network of molecular gas streamers detected inside the CND ring. The kinematics of molecular gas show strong departures from circular motions in the torus, the gas streamers, and the CND ring. These velocity field distortions are interconnected and are part of a 3D outflow that reflects the effects of AGN feedback on the kinematics of molecular gas across a wide range of spatial scales around the central engine. In particular, we estimate through modeling that a significant fraction of the gas inside the torus ( ≃ 0.4 − 0.6 × Mtorusgas ≃ 0.4 − 0.6 × M torus gas $ {\simeq}0.4{-}0.6 \times M_{\mathrm{torus}}^{\mathrm{gas}} $ ) and a comparable amount of mass along the gas streamers are outflowing. However, the bulk of the mass, momentum, and energy of the molecular outflow of NGC 1068 is contained at larger radii in the CND region, where the AGN wind and the radio jet are currently pushing the gas assembled at the Inner Lindblad Resonance (ILR) ring of the nuclear stellar bar. Conclusions. In our favored scenario a wide-angle AGN wind launched from the accretion disk of NGC1068 is currently impacting a sizable fraction of the gas inside the torus. However, a large gas reservoir (≃1.2 − 1.8 × 105 M⊙), which lies close to the equatorial plane of the torus, remains unaffected by the feedback of the AGN wind and can therefore continue fueling the AGN for at least ≃1 − 4 Myr. Nevertheless, AGN fueling currently seems thwarted on intermediate scales (15 pc ≤r ≤ 50 pc).
Star formation is a multi-scale process that requires tracing cloud formation and stellar feedback within the local ( kpc) and global galaxy environment. We present first results from two large ...observing programs on the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA)and the Very Large Telescope/Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer(VLT/MUSE), mapping cloud scales (1″ = 47 pc) in both molecular gas and star-forming tracers across 90 kpc2 of the central disk of NGC 628 to probe the physics of star formation. Systematic spatial offsets between molecular clouds and H ii regions illustrate the time evolution of star-forming regions. Using uniform sampling of both maps on 50-500 pc scales, we infer molecular gas depletion times of 1-3 Gyr, but also find that the increase of scatter in the star formation relation on small scales is consistent with gas and H ii regions being only weakly correlated at the cloud (50 pc) scale. This implies a short overlap phase for molecular clouds and H ii regions, which we test by directly matching our catalog of 1502 H ii regions and 738 GMCs. We uncover only 74 objects in the overlap phase, and we find depletion times >1 Gyr, significantly longer than previously reported for individual star-forming clouds in the Milky Way. Finally, we find no clear trends that relate variations in the depletion time observed on 500 pc scales to physical drivers (metallicity, molecular and stellar-mass surface density, molecular gas boundedness) on 50 pc scales.
We present a convenient, all-in-one framework for the scientific analysis of fully reduced, (integral-field) spectroscopic data. The Galaxy IFU Spectroscopy Tool (GIST) is entirely written in Python ...3 and conducts all the steps from the preparation of input data to the scientific analysis and to the production of publication-quality plots. In its basic set-up, it extracts stellar kinematics, performs an emission-line analysis, and derives stellar population properties from full spectral fitting and via the measurement of absorption line-strength indices by exploiting the well-known pPXF and GandALF routines, where the latter has now been implemented in Python. The pipeline is not specific to any instrument or analysis technique and provides easy means of modification and further development, thanks to its modular code architecture. An elaborate, Python-native parallelisation is implemented and tested on various machines. The software further features a dedicated visualisation routine with a sophisticated graphical user interface. This allows an easy, fully interactive plotting of all measurements, spectra, fits, and residuals, as well as star formation histories and the weight distribution of the models. The pipeline has been successfully applied to both low- and high-redshift data from MUSE, PPAK (CALIFA), and SINFONI, and to simulated data for HARMONI and WEAVE and is currently being used by the TIMER, Fornax3D, and PHANGS collaborations. We demonstrate its capabilities by applying it to MUSE TIMER observations of NGC 1433.
We identify stellar structures in the PHANGS sample of 74 nearby galaxies and construct morphological masks of sub-galactic environments based on
Spitzer
3.6
μ
m images. At the simplest level, we ...distinguish five environments: centres, bars, spiral arms, interarm regions, and discs without strong spirals. Slightly more sophisticated masks include rings and lenses, which are publicly released but not explicitly used in this paper. We examine trends with environment in the molecular gas content, star formation rate, and depletion time using PHANGS–ALMA CO(2–1) intensity maps and tracers of star formation. The interarm regions and discs without strong spirals clearly dominate in area, whereas molecular gas and star formation are quite evenly distributed among the five basic environments. We reproduce the molecular Kennicutt–Schmidt relation with a slope compatible with unity within the uncertainties and without significant slope differences among environments. In contrast to what has been suggested by early studies, we find that bars are not always deserts devoid of gas and star formation, but instead they show large diversity. Similarly, spiral arms do not account for most of the gas and star formation in disc galaxies, and they do not have shorter depletion times than the interarm regions. Spiral arms accumulate gas and star formation, without systematically boosting the star formation efficiency. Centres harbour remarkably high surface densities and on average shorter depletion times than other environments. Centres of barred galaxies show higher surface densities and wider distributions compared to the outer disc; yet, depletion times are similar to unbarred galaxies, suggesting highly intermittent periods of star formation when bars episodically drive gas inflow, without enhancing the central star formation efficiency permanently. In conclusion, we provide quantitative evidence that stellar structures in galaxies strongly affect the organisation of molecular gas and star formation, but their impact on star formation efficiency is more subtle.
Aims.
The complexity of star formation at the physical scale of molecular clouds is not yet fully understood. We investigate the mechanisms regulating the formation of stars in different environments ...within nearby star-forming galaxies from the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS (PHANGS) sample.
Methods.
Integral field spectroscopic data and radio-interferometric observations of 18 galaxies were combined to explore the existence of the resolved star formation main sequence (Σ
stellar
versus Σ
SFR
), resolved Kennicutt–Schmidt relation (Σ
mol. gas
versus Σ
SFR
), and resolved molecular gas main sequence (Σ
stellar
versus Σ
mol. gas
), and we derived their slope and scatter at spatial resolutions from 100 pc to 1 kpc (under various assumptions).
Results.
All three relations were recovered at the highest spatial resolution (100 pc). Furthermore, significant variations in these scaling relations were observed across different galactic environments. The exclusion of non-detections has a systematic impact on the inferred slope as a function of the spatial scale. Finally, the scatter of the Σ
mol. gas + stellar
versus Σ
SFR
correlation is smaller than that of the resolved star formation main sequence, but higher than that found for the resolved Kennicutt–Schmidt relation.
Conclusions.
The resolved molecular gas main sequence has the tightest relation at a spatial scale of 100 pc (scatter of 0.34 dex), followed by the resolved Kennicutt–Schmidt relation (0.41 dex) and then the resolved star formation main sequence (0.51 dex). This is consistent with expectations from the timescales involved in the evolutionary cycle of molecular clouds. Surprisingly, the resolved Kennicutt–Schmidt relation shows the least variation across galaxies and environments, suggesting a tight link between molecular gas and subsequent star formation. The scatter of the three relations decreases at lower spatial resolutions, with the resolved Kennicutt–Schmidt relation being the tightest (0.27 dex) at a spatial scale of 1 kpc. Variation in the slope of the resolved star formation main sequence among galaxies is partially due to different detection fractions of Σ
SFR
with respect to Σ
stellar
.
Observations reveal a strong structural coupling between bulge and disc in S0 galaxies, which seems difficult to explain if they have formed from supposedly catastrophic events such as major mergers. ...We face this question by quantifying the bulge-disc coupling in dissipative simulations of major and minor mergers that result in realistic S0s. We have studied the dissipative N-body binary merger simulations from the GalMer database that give rise to realistic, relaxed E/S0 and S0 remnants. We simulate surface brightness profiles of these S0-like remnants in the K band, mimicking typical observational conditions, to perform bulge-disc decompositions analogous to those carried out in real S0s. The global bulge-disc structure of these remnants has been compared with real data. Contrary to the popular view, mergers can result in S0 remnants with realistically coupled bulge-disc structures in less than ~3 Gyr. The bulge-disc coupling and the presence of pseudo-bulges in real S0s cannot be used as an argument against the possible major-merger origin of these galaxies.
Tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) are gravitationally bound condensations of gas and stars that formed during galaxy interactions. Here we present multi-configuration ALMA observations of J1023+1952, a TDG ...in the interacting system Arp 94, where we resolved CO(2–1) emission down to giant molecular clouds (GMCs) at 0.64″∼45 pc resolution. We find a remarkably high fraction of extended molecular emission (∼80−90%), which is filtered out by the interferometer and likely traces diffuse gas. We detect 111 GMCs that give a similar mass spectrum as those in the Milky Way and other nearby galaxies (a truncated power law with a slope of −1.76 ± 0.13). We also study Larson’s laws over the available dynamic range of GMC properties (∼2 dex in mass and ∼1 dex in size): GMCs follow the size-mass relation of the Milky Way, but their velocity dispersion is higher such that the size-linewidth and virial relations appear super-linear, deviating from the canonical values. The global molecular-to-atomic gas ratio is very high (∼1) while the CO(2–1)/CO(1–0) ratio is quite low (∼0.5), and both quantities vary from north to south. Star formation predominantly takes place in the south of the TDG, where we observe projected offsets between GMCs and young stellar clusters ranging from ∼50 pc to ∼200 pc; the largest offsets correspond to the oldest knots, as seen in other galaxies. In the quiescent north, we find more molecular clouds and a higher molecular-to-atomic gas ratio (∼1.5); atomic and diffuse molecular gas also have a higher velocity dispersion there. Overall, the organisation of the molecular interstellar medium in this TDG is quite different from other types of galaxies on large scales, but the properties of GMCs seem fairly similar, pointing to near universality of the star-formation process on small scales.
The CALIFA team has recently found that the stellar angular momentum and concentration of late-type spiral galaxies are incompatible with those of lenticular galaxies (S0s), concluding that fading ...alone cannot satisfactorily explain the evolution from spirals into S0s. Here we explore whether major mergers can provide an alternative way to transform spirals into S0s by analysing the spiral-spiral major mergers from the GalMer database that lead to realistic, relaxed S0-like galaxies. We find that the change in stellar angular momentum and concentration can explain the differences in the lambda sub(Re)-R sub(90)/R sub(50) plane found by the CALIFA team. Major mergers thus offer a feasible explanation for the transformation of spirals into S0s.
Context.
According to the current understanding of star formation (SF), the regulation of this phenomenon in galaxy disks reflects a complex balance between processes that operate in molecular gas on ...local cloud scales as well as on global disk scales.
Aims.
We analyse the influence of the dynamical environment on the SF relations of the dense molecular gas in the starburst (SB) ring of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068.
Methods.
We used ALMA to image the emission of the 1–0 transitions of HCN and HCO
+
, which trace dense molecular gas in the
r
∼ 1.3 kpc SB ring of NGC 1068, with a resolution of 56 pc. We also used ancillary data of CO(1–0) as well as CO(3–2) and its underlying continuum emission at the resolutions of ∼100 pc and ∼40 pc, respectively. These observations allow us to probe a wide range of molecular gas densities (
n
H
2
∼ 10
3 − 5

−3
). The star-formation rate (SFR) in the SB ring of NGC 1068 is derived from Pa
α
line emission imaged by HST/NICMOS. We analyse how different formulations of SF relations change depending on the adopted aperture sizes and on the choice of molecular gas tracer.
Results.
The scatter in the Kennicutt–Schmidt relation, linking the SFR density (Σ
SFR
) with the (dense) molecular gas surface density (Σ
dense
), is about a factor of two to three lower for the HCN and HCO
+
lines compared to that derived from CO(1–0) for a common aperture. Correlations lose statistical significance below a critical spatial scale of ≈300−400 pc for all gas tracers. The SF efficiency of the dense molecular gas, defined as SFE
dense
≡ Σ
SFR
/Σ
dense
, shows a scattered distribution as a function of the HCN luminosity (
L
′(HCN)) around a mean value of ≃0.01 Myr
−1
. An alternative prescription for SF relations, which includes the dependence of SFE
dense
on the combination of Σ

and the velocity dispersion (

), resolves the degeneracy associated with the SFE
dense
−
L
′(HCN) plot. The SFE
dense
values show a positive trend with the boundedness of the gas, measured by the parameter
b
≡ Σ

. We identify two branches in the SFE
dense
−
b
plot that correspond to two dynamical environments within the SB ring; they are defined by their proximity to the region where the spiral structure is connected to the stellar bar. This region corresponds to the crossing of two overlapping density wave resonances, where an increased rate of cloud-cloud collisions would favour an enhanced compression of molecular gas.
Conclusions.
These results suggest that galactic dynamics plays a major role in the efficiency of the conversion of gas into stars. Our work adds supporting evidence that density-threshold SF models, which argue that the SFE
dense
should be roughly constant, fail to account for spatially resolved SF relations of dense gas in the SB ring of NGC 1068.
ABSTRACT
It is still poorly constrained how the densest phase of the interstellar medium varies across galactic environment. A large observing time is required to recover significant emission from ...dense molecular gas at high spatial resolution, and to cover a large dynamic range of extragalactic disc environments. We present new NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) observations of a range of high critical density molecular tracers (HCN, HNC, HCO+) and CO isotopologues (13CO, C18O) towards the nearby (11.3 Mpc) strongly barred galaxy NGC 3627. These observations represent the current highest angular resolution (1.85 arcsec; 100 pc) map of dense gas tracers across a disc of a nearby spiral galaxy, which we use here to assess the properties of the dense molecular gas, and their variation as a function of galactocentric radius, molecular gas, and star formation. We find that the HCN(1–0)/CO(2–1) integrated intensity ratio does not correlate with the amount of recent star formation. Instead, the HCN(1–0)/CO(2–1) ratio depends on the galactic environment, with differences between the galaxy centre, bar, and bar-end regions. The dense gas in the central 600 pc appears to produce stars less efficiently despite containing a higher fraction of dense molecular gas than the bar ends where the star formation is enhanced. In assessing the dynamics of the dense gas, we find the HCN(1–0) and HCO+(1–0) emission lines showing multiple components towards regions in the bar ends that correspond to previously identified features in CO emission. These features are cospatial with peaks of Hα emission, which highlights that the complex dynamics of this bar-end region could be linked to local enhancements in the star formation.
