This paper surveys the properties which give silicone rubber its distinctive and highly desirable performance characteristics for use as outdoor insulation. The methods of assessing these properties ...are discussed and this is followed by a detailed survey of what is known of aging and recovery mechanisms. Corona is identified as the principle electrical aging agent and evidence is presented for irreversible loss of polymer as a result of aging. However, the surface recovery mechanisms are robust and, provided there is an adequate resting period, the hydrophobic properties recover. This supports the view, from service experience, that there is no substantial evidence to show that normal aging, unless it results in the exposure of the glass fiber core, detracts from the performance of insulators
Abstract A double-blind, placebo-controlled phase II trial (e-Track 444563-014/ NCT00346892 ) was conducted in South Africa to evaluate the co-administration of RIX4414 (live-attenuated human G1P8 ...rotavirus vaccine) and oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) administered simultaneously. Healthy infants ( n = 450) were randomized into three groups (RIX4414 + OPV, RIX4414 + IPV or Placebo + OPV) to receive two oral doses of RIX4414/placebo with OPV or IPV using two vaccination schedules (6–10 weeks and 10–14 weeks). Serum anti-rotavirus IgA antibodies (ELISA) and neutralizing antibodies (micro-neutralization assay) to poliovirus serotypes 1, 2 and 3 were measured. Co-administration of RIX4414 with OPV did not result in a decrease in the high sero-protection rates against poliovirus serotypes 1, 2 and 3 detected after the third OPV dose (98–100%). The anti-rotavirus IgA antibody sero-conversion rates were higher for the 10–14 weeks schedule (55–61%) compared to the 6–10 weeks schedule (36–43%). Solicited symptoms were reported at similar rates between RIX4414 and placebo groups and no serious adverse events related to RIX4414 were reported. This study provided evidence that RIX4414 can be co-administered with routine EPI immunizations including OPV and that two doses of RIX4414 were well tolerated and immunogenic in South African infants.
Background. A phase II, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted in South Africa during 2003–2004 to evaluate the safety, reactogenicity, and immunogenicity of 2 regimens of ...the live attenuated oral human rotavirus vaccine RIX4414 when coadministered with the Expanded Program on Immunization childhood vaccines, including oral polio vaccine. Methods. Healthy infants were randomized (2:2:1) to receive either 2 doses of RIX4414 (n = 190 ; at 10 and 14 weeks, with placebo at 6 weeks), 3 doses of RIX4414 (n = 189 ; at 6, 10, and 14 weeks), or 3 doses of placebo (n = 96), all with concomitant routine vaccinations. The antirotavirus IgA seroconversion rate was assessed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay at 2 months after the last dose of RIX4414 or placebo. Antipolio types 1, 2, and 3 antibodies were measured using a virus neutralization assay. Solicited symptoms were recorded for 15 days after each dose. Results. The antirotavirus IgA seroconversion rates were similar in the RIX4414 2-and 3-dose groups (44.3% and 44.4%, respectively; P = .544, by 1-sided Fisher exact test) and antirotavirus IgA geometric mean concentrations were also comparable. Seroprotection rates for antipolio types 1, 2, and 3 antibodies were high (93%-100%) and were not significantly different among groups. Solicited symptoms reported within 15 days after vaccination were similar in all groups. Conclusions. The immune seroconversion response to the RIX4414 vaccine with 3 doses was not superior to the 2-dose regimen. There was no interference by either regimen with antibody response to oral polio vaccine, and RIX4414 was well tolerated when given with routine vaccinations.

Purpose: The present study was a methodological study designed to reveal the dynamic mechanisms of phonation instability pressure (PIP) using bifurcation analysis. Phonation pressure range (PPR) was also proposed for assessing the pressure range of normal vocal fold vibrations.
Method: The authors first introduced the concept of bifurcation on the basis of a symmetric vocal fold model and then applied the bifurcation analysis to data from excised larynges. By recording acoustic signals from 10 excised larynges, the authors measured phonation threshold pressure (PTP), PIP, and PPR at the bifurcation pressure points from the spectrograms as subglottal pressure was progressively increased. Furthermore, to investigate the effects of vocal fold elongation on PTP, PIP, and PPR, the authors manipulated the elongation of the vocal folds at 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% of the resting vocal fold length.
Results: The authors found that PTP, PIP, and PPR were effectively determined using the bifurcation analysis. When vocal fold elongation was increased from 0% to 15%, PTP was significantly increased ( p < .001), PIP was not significantly changed ( p = .54), and PPR was significantly decreased ( p = .003).
Conclusion: PIP and PPR represent important parameters to assess phonation instability. Bifurcation analysis represents a valuable procedure for revealing the mechanisms behind PTP, PIP, and PPR and for investigating the effects of vocal fold biomechanical parameters on these 3 pressure parameters.

This study examined whether patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and ictal fear (IF) show emotion recognition deficits similar to those associated with amygdala damage. Three groups of patients ...(13 with TLE and IF, 14 with TLE and nonfear auras (non-IF), and 10 with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE)) completed tests of visual and face processing, face emotion recognition and social judgment, together with measures of psychological adjustment (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale; SCL-90-R) and Quality of Life (QOLIE-31). All three epilepsy groups had fear recognition deficits, with relatively greater impairments in the IF group. Fear recognition deficits were associated with impaired social judgment of trustworthiness, duration of epilepsy, and a measure of quality of life. Social cognition impairments previously associated with amygdala dysfunction are also a feature of the neuropsychology of TLE, and extend the hypothesis in that they may additionally play a role in IGE.
Summary
Medial temporal lobe structures have been hypothesized to be important in emotional intelligence (EI) and social cognition. There is some evidence associating temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) ...with impairments in social cognition. This study aimed to establish whether TLE is also associated with deficits in EI. Sixteen patients with TLE and 14 controls without epilepsy matched for age and current intelligence quotient were compared on measures of EI, recognition of facial expressions of emotion, and distress. Results indicated that patients with TLE showed both impaired EI and impaired recognition of facial expressions. They also reported greater psychological distress, which correlated negatively with EI. It is suggested that some of the psychosocial problems experienced by patients with TLE can be conceptualized as the consequences of deficits in EI, possibly resulting from epilepsy‐related disruption to medial temporal lobe functioning.
Benzylic fluorides were synthesized via rhodium-catalyzed nucleophilic fluorination of benzylic trichloroacetimidates. A variety of naphthyl, phenyl, and pyridinyl trichloroacetimidates were ...fluorinated with Et3N·3HF reagent to provide fluorine-containing compounds in moderate to high yields under mild and operationally simple conditions. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that benzylic fluorination of trichloroacetimidate substrates are more likely to proceed through a discrete benzylic cation, generated by rhodium catalyst.

We report a review of the current practice of neuropsychologists working within epilepsy surgery services. The aim of the review was to examine areas of diversity and consensus across current ...national service provision and to examine progress in service delivery since a previous survey in 1994.
Sixteen centres provided information via a questionnaire on three areas of clinical practice: pre- and post-surgery neuropsychological protocols; the intracarotid sodium amytal protocol; patient and family expectations and psychological health, in addition to examining aspects of the context of clinical practice such as the role and experience of the psychologist and future service priorities.
Findings of the review suggest that, whilst progress has been made towards fulfilling the recommended guidelines for services, there remain a number of areas for development in terms of the provision of a consistent nationwide service delivery approach. Cognitive assessment and the ICSA procedure remain essential components of the neuropsychology service. Assessment of psychological health and quality of life is now carried out by a growing number of centres, although these remain areas for further development.
Consensus was found in terms of the need to establish centres of excellence, and to develop appropriate training for neuropsychologists in the field.
