Education of healthcare professionals is of primary importance for patient safety. In some health related professions, education and training have to be practiced during the entire working period and ...not only limited to school years. The use of new technology such as virtual reality and e-learning brings new possibilities with significant improvement in learning outcomes. Serious gaming describes a technology that can educate and train while entertaining users. This type of training can be very useful for health professions because it improves learning outcomes creating a learner oriented approach and providing a stealth mode of teaching. In some fields it represents an ideal instrument for continuous health professions education also in terms of costs because it is cheaper than traditional training methods that use cadavers or mannequins. In this paper we make a scoping review of serious games developed for health professions and health related fields in order to understand if they are useful tools for health related fields training. Many papers confirmed that serious gaming is a useful technology that improves learning and skills development for health professionals.
Vitellogenins (Vg) are the major precursor of the egg-yolk proteins, vitellins (Vn), which provide energy reserves for embryonic development in oviparous organisms. In mature females, Vg are ...generally synthesised in response to endogenous estrogens, such as 17β-estradiol (E2), released into the bloodstream and then stored in developing oocytes. In males, the Vg gene, although present, is normally silent. However, it may be activated by (xeno)-estrogens. These substances belong to a large and heterogeneous group of environmental contaminants capable of altering endocrine functions in organisms. For this reason, they are named endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Natural steroidal estrogens E2, estrone (E1), estriol (E3) and synthetic chemicals, such as pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and household products (surfactants) are estrogenic compounds widespread in aquatic ecosystems. The main sources of contamination mostly stem (or originate) from municipal and industrial effluents, agricultural practices, livestock wastes and sewage treatment plants (STP). Recently, Vg induction, mainly in males and immature females, has been proposed as a useful biomarker to assess estrogenic contamination in aquatic environments. Indeed, estrogenicity of individual chemicals and mixtures has extensively been evaluated, in both laboratory and field studies, albeit mostly in fish. In contrast, limited attention has centred on evaluating xenoestrogen effects in aquatic invertebrates, probably owing to limited knowledge of their endocrinology. This review focuses on a brief description of xenoestrogens and their occurrence in aquatic environments, and on Vg induction in aquatic invertebrates in response to both experimental and environmental exposure to estrogenic compounds. Results of recent field and laboratory studies are presented. In addition, new perspectives about the use of Vg induction as a biomarker of exposure to estrogenic compounds are also discussed.
The aim of the SYRIACA project was to test the capability of a social robot to perform specific tasks in healthcare settings, reducing infection risks for patients and caregivers. The robot was ...piloted in an Intensive Hematological Unit, where the patients’ and healthcare operators’ acceptability of the robot was evaluated. The robot’s functions, including logistics, surveillance, entertainment, and remote visits, were well accepted. Patients expressed interest in having multiple interactions with the robot, which testifies to its engaging potential and that it provides useful services. During remote visits, the robot reduced perceived stress among patients, alleviating feelings of isolation. The successful implementation of the robot suggests its potential to enhance safety and well-being in healthcare settings.
The hospital at home concept integrates key digital medicine technologies and concepts in a single platform approach, with telemedicine, wearables, and sensors. It could bring benefits to patients, ...who face lower risks from hospital infections and who want to be at home with their loved ones. Moreover, it may lead to efficiency savings, through its seamless integration of data flows, and therefore is likely to be an increasingly implemented model. But what happens when the platform succumbs to exploited platform/infrastructure vulnerabilities or cyber attacks like ransomware that have been weaponized to bring networked systems crashing down? Exploring the attack modes and their consequences could help prioritize adequate safeguards.
Heterocyathus aequicostatus and Heteropsammia cochlea are two species of solitary Anthozoan corals endemic to the Indo-Pacific. These species live along sandy bottoms at depths equal to or greater ...than approximately 20 m; where present, they can be locally dense within small areas. Each of the two corals may engage in a unique form of commensalism with a sipunculan worm (Aspidosiphon sp), which moves the coral about on substrates and prevents it from becoming buried in sediment or toppled upside-down. The symbiosis begins when the coral larva settles on a small mollusk shell already inhabited by a sipunculan worm. The developing coral then grows over the shell, but leaves open an orifice so that the worm may survive and perform its commensal duties. Given that the two coral species belong to different taxonomic families, this is a possible example of convergent coevolution.
Cognitive impairment and dementia can negatively impact the nutritional capacities of older people. Malnutrition is common in hospitalized frail elderly people with cognitive impairment and ...negatively affects prognosis. Malnutrition worsens the quality of life and increases morbidity and mortality. This scoping review aimed to identify factors affecting the risk of malnutrition and preventive strategies in hospitalized patients with cognitive impairment, focusing on nursing interventions. The authors researched population, context, and concept in international databases of nursing interest. Full texts that met the inclusion criteria were selected and reviewed. The extracted data were subject to thematic analysis. A five-stage approach, already reported in the scientific literature, was utilized in the following scoping review. Of 638 articles yielded, 9 were included. Two focus areas were identified as follows: (1) prevalence and risk factors of malnutrition in older patients with cognitive decline; (2) nursing strategies used to enhance clinical outcomes. Nursing health interventions aim to recognize and reduce malnutrition risk, positively impacting this phenomenon. A multidisciplinary team is essential to meet the nutritional needs of these patients.
The accumulation of the widely-used antibacterial and antifungal compound triclosan (TCS) in freshwaters raises concerns about the impact of this harmful chemical on the biofilms that are the ...dominant life style of microorganisms in aquatic systems. However, investigations to-date rarely go beyond effects at the cellular, physiological or morphological level. The present paper focuses on bacterial biofilms addressing the possible chemical impairment of their functionality, while also examining their substratum stabilization potential as one example of an important ecosystem service. The development of a bacterial assemblage of natural composition--isolated from sediments of the Eden Estuary (Scotland, UK)--on non-cohesive glass beads (<63 µm) and exposed to a range of triclosan concentrations (control, 2-100 µg L(-1)) was monitored over time by Magnetic Particle Induction (MagPI). In parallel, bacterial cell numbers, division rate, community composition (DGGE) and EPS (extracellular polymeric substances: carbohydrates and proteins) secretion were determined. While the triclosan exposure did not prevent bacterial settlement, biofilm development was increasingly inhibited by increasing TCS levels. The surface binding capacity (MagPI) of the assemblages was positively correlated to the microbial secreted EPS matrix. The EPS concentrations and composition (quantity and quality) were closely linked to bacterial growth, which was affected by enhanced TCS exposure. Furthermore, TCS induced significant changes in bacterial community composition as well as a significant decrease in bacterial diversity. The impairment of the stabilization potential of bacterial biofilm under even low, environmentally relevant TCS levels is of concern since the resistance of sediments to erosive forces has large implications for the dynamics of sediments and associated pollutant dispersal. In addition, the surface adhesive capacity of the biofilm acts as a sensitive measure of ecosystem effects.
(1) Background: In addition to conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has been investigated as a potential diagnostic and predictive tool for patients with ...degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM). In this preliminary study, we evaluated the use of quantitative DTI in the clinical practice as a possible measure to correlate with upper limbs function. (2) Methods: A total of 11 patients were enrolled in this prospective observational study. Fractional anisotropy (FA) values was extracted from DTI data before and after surgery using a GE Signa 1.5 T MRI scanner. The Nine-Hole Peg Test and a digital dynamometer were used to measure dexterity and hand strength, respectively. (3) Results: We found a significant increase of FA values after surgery, in particular below the most compressed level (p = 0.044) as well as an improvement in postoperative dexterity and hand strength. Postoperative FA values moderately correlate with hand dexterity (r = 0.4272, R2 = 0.0735, p = 0.19 for the right hand; r = 0.2087, R2 = 0.2265, p = 0.53 for the left hand). (4) Conclusion: FA may be used as a marker of myelopathy and could represent a promising diagnostic value in patients affected by DCM. Surgical decompression can improve the clinical outcome of these patients, especially in terms of the control of finger-hand coordination and dexterity.
The Manado area (Indonesia-North Sulawesi), a marine high diversity hot-spot, hosts 7 species of anemonefish (family Pomacentridae, subfamily Amphiprioniae) living in symbiosis with 9 species of sea ...anemones (family Stichodactylidae and Actiniidae). This high biological diversity −27% and 80%, respectively, of the total known diversity of anemonefish and sea anemones—allows us to test different hypotheses focused on the obligate mutualism between anemonefish and sea anemones. In the Manado area, species richness of anemones and anemonefish across several sites was not correlated, but all anemones contained at least one fish individual, and there was a strong positive correlation between the numbers of individual anemonefish and anemones. As expected, each fish species had a preferred anemone host; also a partial niche overlap (Pianka's Index) was often detected. The analysis of unique species composition suggests that competition is not an important factor determining the presence or absence of particular combinations of either anemonefish or host anemones (no evidence of competitive exclusion). The NODF algorithm showed that, at both a regional and local scale, the interaction between anemonefish and host anemones is not significantly nested, as a result of a combination of local conditions with competition, forcing species that regionally are more generalist to become more specialist.
