This paper reveals the relational, multi-layered constructions and boundaries of park spaces and who the users of the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) in Cape Town are. Access to TMNP is discussed ...within its urban metropolitan context and the role Table Mountain has played in Capetonians representations of the mountain through different eras – the colonial, apartheid and post-apartheid. The formidable challenge to the park management, with visitor numbers of around 3 million annually, is to provide a high-quality recreational and tourist experience without compromising the ecological integrity of the park and making sure that the park is accessible to all. However, the December 2007 to November 2008 TMNP survey found that the park is a recreational space for the affluent. Most visitors to the park are from high-income neighbouring suburbs. Issues of use of and access to the park by visitors vary greatly and typically reflect the duality of the legacy of apartheid planning. If most of the South African population is largely invisible in the TMNP (and other national parks), questions arise about the parks’ future relevance, meaning, and protection.
•Major marketing promotions of the city portray Table Mountain as the defining landmark and spatial anchor of Cape Town.•Table Mountain as a symbolic representation of the broader TMNP landscape.•Colonial and apartheid park use exclusions are entrenched in contemporary socio-spatial ordering of the city.•Table Mountain National Park is almost exclusively used by residents living in high-income suburbs.•‘Non-white’ Cape Town residents mainly visit the touristic sites implying they are merely ‘tourists’ in their own city.
Les connexions entre humains et animaux non humains sont devenues ces dernières années un champ de recherche foisonnant et un objet médiatique, dans lesquels la place des prédateurs occupe une ...position particulière (Rodary, 2019). Parce qu’ils sont menacés et menaçants, les prédateurs cristallisent les politiques de la nature dans ce qu’elles ont de plus exigeantes pour une bonne vie sur Terre. Premières victimes des dynamiques néolithiques et modernes d’expansion de l’écoumène, ils paraissent aujourd’hui retrouver une place légitime dans cette part sauvage du monde que l’écologie appelle de ses vœux (Maris, 2018). Cette part, néanmoins, les politiques peinent à la définir, tiraillées qu’elles sont entre des logiques de distanciation/contigüité et d’engagement/sécurité. Elles le sont d’autant plus que les modalités de coexistence entre prédateurs humains et non humains entretiennent un rapport complexe aux savoirs dans lequel la production de l’ignorance est déterminante. Les espaces océaniques, longtemps envisagés comme dernière part sauvage du monde par leurs caractères à la fois matériels et cognitifs, sont désormais traversés par une logique de front (Fache et al., 2021) incorporant les prédateurs marins dans les rets de ces problématiques d’engagement et de distanciation. Cette traversée vers les milieux marins occasionne néanmoins des transformations, liées aux conditions environnementales et existentielles spécifiques aux océans. Le non-habitabilité de ces espaces pour les humains produit une ignorance et une vulnérabilité particulières pour ceux qui s’y aventurent. La connaissance et l’usage de ces espaces passe alors par des artefacts techniques (lignes de pêche, ondes soniques et visuelles) qui ne réduisent pas fondamentalement l’altérité transpécifique. Dès lors, la « plongée » océanique (en surface ou en profondeur) génère une construction intraspécifique d’entraide (Gilroy, 2018) mais exacerbe la fragilité interspécifique de l’humain face au prédateur. L’article entend dans ce contexte interroger la construction territoriale à l’interface d’un espace de prédation et d’un espace social d’appropriation (Lévy, 1994) appliqué au domaine marin. D’autre part, il interroge l’historicisation de l’animal et la construction de l’individu prédateur comme acteur au-delà d’un déterminant d’espèce. Mais à rebours des discours actuellement dominants sur la connexion transpécifique heureuse et apolitique, il repolitise la rencontre entre humains et espèces marines et explore des voies de retenue de l’expansion anthropique basée sur la reconnaissance de la distance à maintenir entre le prédateur humain et les prédateurs marins.

Destiné à un large public, cet ouvrage présente les recherches les plus illustratives de l’Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD) en faveur de la biodiversité et du développement durable. ...De tous les grands enjeux environnementaux contemporains, la protection de la biodiversité est sans doute l’un des plus complexes, car cette biodiversité que l’on veut préserver ne peut être appréhendée hors des interactions avec les sociétés humaines qui vivent avec, l’utilisent, la gèrent, la détruisent et la protègent parfois. Ainsi, les exemples qui ponctuent ces pages attestent que la biodiversité ne peut plus être envisagée scientifiquement dans une vision disciplinaire et sectorielle. Elle doit au contraire être croisée avec les principales dynamiques, humaines et non humaines, qui déterminent les changements à la fois globaux et localisés auxquels nous faisons face aujourd’hui. En cela, cet ouvrage témoigne de l’engagement de l’IRD et de ses partenaires pour une science capable de produire des savoirs utiles et mobilisables au Sud, une science de la durabilité au sens fort du terme, qui puisse rendre la Terre durablement vivable.
Community-based natural resource management policies have been seriously criticized in the last few years. Detractors have focused either on the lack of local participation, or on the lack of ...ecological results. Using two of the earliest and most studied community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) initiatives in Africa (ADMADE in Zambia and CAMPFIRE in Zimbabwe), the article argues that such critics miss the actual stakes of community-based policies. These policies bring local communities into a global world, both in terms of practice and narrative. From this point of view, community-based policies must be viewed as long-term approaches to change in rural Africa, which will progressively make the local/global partition fuse into processes of continual social “mobilization”.

At the Rio+20 Conference (June 2012), the biodiversity conservation agenda was subsumed into broader environmental issues like sustainable development, “green economy,” and climate change. This ...shoehorning of biodiversity issues is concomitant with a trend toward market‐based instruments and toward standardized biodiversity assessment and monitoring. This article raises concern that these trends can marginalize important and specific aspects of biodiversity governance, including other policy tools and region‐specific socio‐ecological environments. Among other trends, this contributes to the marginalization of agroecosystems as habitat and matrix for biodiversity. Such agroecosystems, however, can have a major impact on conservation outcomes as they comprise a major part of terrestrial lands. If the biodiversity crisis is to be curbed, special attention must be drawn to societies, institutional approaches, and environments that are currently marginalized in conservation policies.
University of the Witwatersrand and Institut de Recherche pour le Développement Mozambique has long been considered through the narrow lens Of nation-stateness. As the East African province of ...Mozambique, as a labour reserve for South Africa, or more recently as a 'donor darling', Mozambique has been defined through largely monolithic political or scientific narratives framed by external and single rather than internal and diverse dynamics. There is indeed a strong historical basis for linking the trajectory such a defined 'social space' with larger trends at both regional and international levels. But the very process Of continental or global connections may overlook the actual diversity that makes up what we conveniently label or call 'Mozambique'.
Designed to reach the widest possible audience, this volume showcases some of the research projects which best illustrate the commitment of the French National Research Institute for Sustainable ...Development (IRD) to biodiversity and sustainable development. Among today’s many pressing environmental challenges, protecting biodiversity is probably one of the most complex, since it cannot be understood independently of its interactions with the human societies who live with it, use it, manage it, destroy and, occasionally, protect it. As the examples contained herein demonstrate, biodiversity can no longer be confined by narrow academic boundaries. On the contrary, it is a subject inextricably linked with all of the major dynamics, human and non-human, which shape the global and local changes we currently face. In this respect, the present volume is testament to the commitment demonstrated by IRD and its partners to a vision of scientific endeavour which yields tangible, utilisable knowledge for the Global South, sustainability science in the strongest sense of the term, allowing our planet and its biodiversity to thrive in the long term.
