ABSTRACT Introduction: Necrotizing periodontitis (NP) is an acute inflammatory disease that can appear suddenly and with fast destruction of periodontal tissues. The most relevant clinical findings are necrosis and ulcer at the interdental papilla, gingival bleeding, pain, bone destruction, and, in severe cases, bone sequestrum could occur. Although the primary etiological factor is the accumulation of bacterial biofilm, risk factors like systemic and/or psychological diseases could affect the host immune response playing an important role in the development of NP. Objective: Present the resolution of a PN case with a multidisciplinary and conservative approach. Case presentation: A 22-year-old female patient was referred to the Dental Clinics Center of the University of Talca (Talca, Chile) with apparent psychological stress and smoker. She reports intense and persistent pain in the anterior teeth with spontaneous bleeding and halitosis for 2 weeks.The treatment consisted of the evaluation of the systemic condition and the management of the acute phase, the etiological phase, and subsequent corrective phase for the surgical correction for the sequels. This case has 2 years follow-up with a rigorous periodontal maintenance regimen, re-evaluating the periodontal tissues, motivating, and reinforcing oral hygiene. Conclusions: This case report contributes to the diagnosis and therapeutic options that the professional has in front of the sequels that occur in cases of NP, which, although it is not a frequent pathology, can quickly worsen and increase tissue damage.
Conventional municipal wastewater treatment plants are not able to entirely degrade some organic pollutants that end up in the environment. Within this group of contaminants, Emerging Contaminants ...are mostly unregulated compounds that may be candidates for future regulation. In this work, different advanced technologies: solar heterogeneous photocatalysis with TiO2, solar photo-Fenton and ozonation, are studied as tertiary treatments for the remediation of micropollutants present in real municipal wastewater treatment plants effluents at pilot plant scale. Contaminants elimination was followed by Liquid Chromatography/Quadrupole ion trap Mass Spectrometry analysis after a pre-concentration 100:1 by automatic solid phase extraction. 66 target micropollutants were identified and quantified. 16 of those contaminants at initial concentrations over 1000 ng L−1, made up over 88% of the initial total effluent pollutant load. The order of micropollutants elimination efficiency under the experimental conditions evaluated was solar photo-Fenton > ozonation > solar heterogeneous photocatalysis with TiO2. Toxicity analyses by Vibrio fischeri and respirometric tests showed no significant changes in the effluent toxicity after the three tertiary treatments application. Solar photo-Fenton and ozonation treatments were also compared from an economical point of view.

► Solar photo-Fenton as a promising tertiary treatment for MWTP effluents. ► A QTRAP was employed for monitoring micropollutants removal. ► Photocatalysis with TiO2 is very inefficient compared to solar photo-Fenton. ► Photo-Fenton is economically competitive with ozonation. ► Solar photo-Fenton investment cost is offset by the operating cost of ozonation.
Purpose
High intake of salt is associated with early development of cardiovascular risk factors (e.g., hypertension, obesity). In “developed” countries, individuals frequently exceed dietary ...recommendations for salt intake. Taking into account the limited data on sodium intake by 24-h excretion in urine in schoolchildren, we wished to determine baseline salt intake in Spanish subjects aged 7–11 years.
Methods
The present study was an observational study involving 205 schoolchildren (109 boys and 96 girls) selected from various Spanish provinces. Sodium intake was ascertained by measuring sodium excretion in urine over 24 h. Creatinine was used to validate completeness of urine collections. The correlation between fat-free mass determined by anthropometry and that determined via urinary excretion of creatinine was calculated (
r
= 0.651;
p
< 0.001).
Results
Mean 24-h urinary excretion of sodium was 132.7 ± 51.4 mmol/24 h (salt equivalent: 7.8 ± 3.1 g/day). Hence, 84.5 % of subjects aged ≤10 years had intakes of >4 g salt/day, and 66.7 % of those aged >10 years had intakes of >5 g salt/day. Urinary excretion of sodium was correlated with systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure (
r
= 0.1574 and
r
= 0.1400, respectively). Logistic regression analyses, adjusted by sex, showed that a high body mass index (odds ratio = 1.159; 95 % CI 1.041–1.290;
p
< 0.05) was associated with an increased likelihood of high urinary excretion of sodium.
Conclusions
Sodium intake, as estimated by 24-h urinary excretion, was (on average) higher than recommended. Reducing the sodium content children’s diet is a sound policy to reduce cardiovascular risk.
This work studies long-range correlations and informational efficiency of the Bitcoin market for the period from June 30, 2013 to June 3rd, 2017. To this end, the detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) ...was implemented over sliding windows to estimate long-range correlations for price returns. It was found that the Bitcoin market exhibits periods of efficiency alternating with periods where the price dynamics are driven by anti-persistence. The pattern is replicated by prices samples at day, hour and second frequencies. The Bitcoin market also presents asymmetric correlations with respect to increasing and decreasing price trending, with the former trend linked to anti-persistence of returns dynamics.
•The Bitcoin market is not uniformly efficient.•The Hurst exponent shows on-year cycling.•Asymmetric long-range correlations with respect to price trending are exhibited.•Asymmetries and inefficiency are replicated over different time scales.
This work focused studying waste car bumper samples and their processing by re‐extrusion‐injection. Car bumpers are composed of crystalline phases of polypropylene (PP), talc, and amorphous ethylene ...propylene diene monomer (EPDM). The recycled material's thermal, mechanical, and structural properties depend strongly on the process used for extrusion and injection and the crystalline phases formed during the heating process. The FWHM of the x‐ray diffraction patterns was used to study the recrystallization phenomenon in PP, and the result was in direct correlation with the Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) results. The remaining micro paint particles from the bumpers involved in the recycled extrusion‐injection process affect the mechanical properties, and their size and toughness could affect the injection. Removing these particles could improve the mechanical properties of the recycled PP. Car parts based on polypropylene can be recycled for the automotive industry to produce the same type of products and even for other areas. A methodology and metrology can be developed to understand the chemical composition and its relationship with the properties of PP‐based materials. This could lead to finding new applications in different fields and promote the development of a circular economy.
Methodology for PP‐based composites used in the automotive industry to determine it's capacities to be recycled.
Porous clay heterostructures (PCH) are obtained by the insertion of an organic bulky cation in the interlayer spacing of a smectite, causing a swelling of the clay mineral. Right after, oxides ...species, mainly silicon oxide, are incorporated as pillars galleries between adjacent layers to form a porous structure after the removal of the template. The ordering of the clay mineral as well the organic cation incorporated in the synthetic step favors the modulation of the textural properties of the PCH. In addition, the incorporation of heteroatoms in the pillars galleries can also modulate the acidity of the PCH. The modulation of the pore size and the acid properties provides to these materials a wide range of applications in the fields of adsorption and catalysis. This paper carries out a detailed review of the synthesis of PCH, characterization as well as uses and application reported in the literature.

β Cell transcription factors such as forkhead box protein O1 (FoxO1), v‐maf musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma oncogene homolog A (MafA), pancreatic and duodenal homeobox 1, and neuronal differentiation ...1, are dysfunctional in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Posttransplant diabetes mellitus resembles T2DM and reflects interaction between pretransplant insulin resistance and immunosuppressants, mainly calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs). We evaluated the effect of tacrolimus (TAC), cyclosporine A (CsA), and metabolic stressors (glucose plus palmitate) on insulinoma β cells in vitro and in pancreata of obese and lean Zucker rats. Cells were cultured for 5 days with 100 μM palmitate and 22 mM glucose; CsA (250 ng/mL) or TAC (15 ng/mL) were added in the last 48 h. Glucose plus palmitate increased nuclear FoxO1 and decreased nuclear MafA. TAC in addition to glucose plus palmitate magnified these changes in nuclear factors, whereas CsA did not. In addition to glucose plus palmitate, both drugs reduced insulin content, and TAC also affected insulin secretion. TAC withdrawal or conversion to CsA restored these changes. Similar results were observed in pancreata of obese animals on CNIs. TAC and CsA, in addition to glucose plus palmitate, induced comparable inhibition of calcineurin and nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT); therefore, TAC potentiates glucolipotoxicity in β cells, possibly by sharing common pathways of β cell dysfunction. TAC‐induced β cell dysfunction is potentially reversible. Inhibition of the calcineurin–NFAT pathway may contribute to the diabetogenic effect of CNIs but does not explain the stronger effect of TAC compared with CsA.
Tacrolimus, but not cyclosporine, potentiates glucolipotoxicity in β cells by sharing common pathways of β cell dysfunction, while the inhibition of the calcineurin–NFAT pathway does not explain the greater diabetogenic effect of tacrolimus compared to cyclosporine.
