We report the CT and MR findings in two patients with multifocal meningioangiomatosis, neither of whom had a family history or stigmata of neurofibromatosis. All lesions were located in the cortical ...and subcortical areas and had round dense calcifications with eccentric cysts. The masses were associated with surrounding edema and gliosis.
We compared the dose–response relationships of cisatracurium, mivacurium, atracurium, vecuronium and rocuronium and examined the interactions of cisatracurium with mivacurium, atracurium, vecuronium ...and rocuronium in humans by isobolographic and fractional analyses. We studied 180 adult patients during nitrous oxide–fentanyl–propofol anaesthesia. Neuromuscular block was monitored using mechanomyography to detect the twitch response of the ulnar nerve at the wrist. The dose–response curves were determined by probit analysis. The calculated ED50 values and their 95% confidence intervals were 40.9 (38.1–43.7), 49.8 (47.0–52.6), 187.2 (175.1–199.3), 36.6 (34.7–38.5) and 136.4 (129.2–143.6) μg.kg−1 for cisatracurium, mivacurium, atracurium, vecuronium and rocuronium, respectively. Corresponding ED95 values were 57.6 (53.5–61.7), 91.8 (88.1–95.5), 253.1 (238.9–267.3), 52.9 (49.1–56.7) and 288.7 (276.2–301.2) μg.kg−1, respectively. The interaction between cisatracurium and mivacurium, vecuronium or rocuronium was found to be synergistic, but the interaction between cisatracurium and atracurium was found to be additive. Synergy between cisatracurium and vecuronium or rocuronium was greater than between cisatracurium and mivacurium.
Human epidermal growth factor (hEGF) secreted by recombinant Escherichia coli was purified from culture broth by expanded‐bed adsorption (EBA) chromatography, strong anion‐exchange chromatography and ...finally preparative reversed‐phase HPLC (RP‐HPLC). The EBA chromatography step simultaneously captured the hEGF by cationic exchanger and removed the cellular biomass from the diluted culture broth. This step was carried out at high throughput, and resulted in a high yield (>90%) and a purification factor of approx. 20‐fold to >80% purity. Its process performance was well maintained during a 16‐fold scale‐up. After the successive purification steps of anion‐exchange chromatography and RP‐HPLC, the overall yield was approx. 84% and the purity was satisfactory (>99.5%). It was concluded that the purification process was very efficient and scaleable, warranting its implementation in large‐scale manufacturing.

The Lens Opacities Classification System II (LOCS II) was used at the slit lamp. Cumulative incidence was defined as the development of any nuclear, cortical or posterior subcapsular (PSC) opacities (LOCS II scores ≥2) among persons without that opacity type at baseline. Cumulative progression was defined by at least two-step increases in scores among persons with preexisting lens opacities.
The incidence of cortical opacities was about five times greater in black than white participants (age–gender adjusted relative risk = 4.7; 95% confidence interval: 1.9–11.4). In the black population, the 4-year incidence rates were 22.2% (20.4%–24.0%) for any cortical, 9.2% (8.2%–10.4%) for any nuclear, and 3.3% (2.7%–4.0%) for any PSC opacities; rates increased greatly with age. Four-year progression rates were 12.5% for cortical, 3.6% for nuclear, and 23.0% for PSC opacities, without consistent pattern by age. Women had a greater risk of cortical and nuclear opacities (
P < 0.05) than men and greater progression of nuclear opacities. The presence of PSC opacities at baseline seemed to at least double the incidence and progression rates of other opacities. In persons initially opacity free, single cortical opacities were the predominant type to develop at followup. Visual acuity loss frequently accompanied incident opacities.
This longitudinal study provides new population-based data on the natural history of lens opacities. Incidence and progression of opacities, especially of cortical opacities, were high. After 4 years of followup, 1 in 4 to 5 participants developed cortical opacities, 1 in 11 developed nuclear opacities, and 1 in 30 developed PSC opacities. The information obtained attests to the public health impact of age-related cataract, as well as its extent, in this and similar black populations.
We report the MR findings of parapharyngeal branchial cleft cyst manifesting as multiple, lower cranial nerve palsies in a 35-year-old woman. On MR images, a well-marginated cystic mass was detected ...in the right parapharyngeal space, with displacement of both the right internal carotid artery and the right internal jugular vein on the posterolateral side. The cyst contained a whitish fluid that was slightly hyperintense on T1-weighted images and slightly hypointense to CSF on T2-weighted images. No enhancement on contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images was present. The right side of the tongue showed high signal intensity on T2-weighted images, suggesting denervation.
We report upon the synthesis of the following derivatives: N-substituted-pyridino2,3-findole-4,9-dione, and 6-(alpha-diethoxycarbonyl-methyl)-7-substituted-amino-quinoline-5,8-dione, which contain ...the active quinoline-5,8-dione (VII) moiety. The cytotoxic activities of these compounds have been tested in SRB (SulfoRhodamine B) assays against the cancer cell lines of A-549 (human lung cancer), SK-MEL-2 (human melanoma cancer), SK-OV-3 (human ovarian cancer), XF-498 (human brain cancer) and HCT 15 (human colon cancer). The compound, N-benzyl-3-ethoxycarbonyl-2-hydroxy-pyridino2,3-findole-4,9-dione (A-9), also showed higher activity than cis-platin. The highest level of cytotoxic activity in these human tumor cell lines was observed in the compound 6-(alpha-diethoxycarbonyl-methyl)-7-(2-methyl-phenylamino)-quinoline-5,8-dione (B-3).
Considerable attention has been focused on the role of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) in neuropsychiatric disorders and neurodegenerative diseases including epilepsy. Therefore, in the present ...study, we investigated the temporal and spatial alteration of CRF receptor in the gerbil hippocampal complex in order to characterize the possible changes and associations with different sequelae of spontaneous seizure in these animals. Thirty minutes postictal, a decline in CRF receptor immunoreactivity was observed in the granule cells and hilar neurons. In the subiculum, CRF receptor immunoreactivity was also significantly decreased at this time point. Twenty-four hours after seizure onset, the immunoreactivity in these regions recovered to the pre-seizure level. Moreover, 30
min after seizure in the entorhinal cortex, the density of CRF receptor immunoreactivity began to decrease, particularly in the layers II and III, compared to pre-seizure group. Nevertheless, 24
h after seizure onset, CRF receptor immunodensity had recovered to its seizure-sensitive (SS) level. These results suggest that altered CRF receptor expression in the hippocampal complex may affect tissue excitability and seizure activity in SS gerbils.
Clinicopathological features of four cases of oncocytic adrenocortical carcinomas were studied. All tumors were large, circumscribed tumors with average size and weight of 11.5 cm and 586 g, ...respectively. The cut surfaces were yellow or brown and tan with areas of hemorrhage, necrosis, fibrosis, myxoid and cystic change. The tumor cells were exclusively oncocytic with a diffuse or compact and solid arrangement. Nuclear atypia was identified but mitosis was rare. Capsular invasion was identified in all tumors and vascular invasion was identified in one tumor. All tumors were immunoreactive for vimentin and inhibins. Immunoreactivity for pancytokeratin, synaptophysin and S‐100 protein was variable and focal. All tumors had low proliferative indices, of less than 1%, and were negative for p53 protein. Ultrastructurally, the cytoplasm of tumor cells showed numerous mitochondria in a compact arrangement. Oncocytic adrenocortical carcinomas showed a similar sex ratio, slightly older mean age, similar left predilection, slightly smaller size and lighter weight compared with the conventional carcinomas. We suggest that most oncocytic adrenocortical carcinomas might be low‐grade malignancies with less aggressive histological features compared with conventional carcinomas. However, they should be excised completely because of the likelihood of recurrence and metastasis during the follow‐up period.
Rolling mouse Nagoya (rolling: tg(rol)) is a neurologic mutant mouse exhibiting severe ataxia. Two alleles of the rolling mutation, tottering (tg) and leaner(tg(la)), have been identified as ...mutations in the voltage-dependent calcium channel alpha1A subunit. No specific light and electron microscopic findings have been reported for the rolling mouse cerebellum except a decreased number of granule cells, while altered Purkinje cell/parallel fiber synapses have been observed in tottering and leaner cerebella. Rolling mouse cerebella were analyzed using anti-calbindin-D immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy to investigate Purkinje cell morphology and synaptic contacts between Purkinje cell dendritic spines and parallel fiber varicosities. Multiple Purkinje cell dendritic spines synapsing with single parallel fiber varicosities were frequently observed in rolling cerebella. The correlation between the presence of altered Purkinje cell synapses and ataxia in rolling mice warrants further investigation.
