The KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment, which aims to make a direct and model-independent determination of the absolute neutrino mass scale, is a complex experiment with many components. ...More than 15 years ago, we published a technical design report (TDR) https://publikationen.bibliothek.kit.edu/270060419 to describe the hardware design and requirements to achieve our sensitivity goal of 0.2 eV at 90% C.L. on the neutrino mass. Since then there has been considerable progress, culminating in the publication of first neutrino mass results with the entire beamline operating arXiv:1909.06048. In this paper, we document the current state of all completed beamline components (as of the first neutrino mass measurement campaign), demonstrate our ability to reliably and stably control them over long times, and present details on their respective commissioning campaigns.
The palaeogeographic position of South China in relation to India in the Neoproterozoic is controversial. Resolution of this controversy constrains the reconstruction of Rodinia during its breakup ...and contributes to our understanding of Snowball Earth. This work compares the Neoproterozoic histories of the Lesser Himalaya in northern India and the Yangtze block in southern China. We present U–Pb LA-ICP-MS ages of detrital zircon grains from six Indian and three Chinese siliciclastic sedimentary rocks, such as sandstones or diamictites/tillites. In total, 1148 grains were analysed from which 833 measurements gave ages with a degree of concordance between 90 and 110%. The correlation of the Indian and the Chinese sections is possible using the tillites of both areas purportedly deposited during the Snowball Earth time interval: the Blaini tillite from India and the Nantuo tillite from China. The U–Pb ages confirm the Marinoan age of the Chinese Liantuo tillite. Although the youngest zircon age for the Indian Blaini tillite is about 678
Ma, the Marinoan age is indicated by the presence of a typical Marinoan white to bright yellowish overlying cap carbonate.
In addition to the tillites, representative detrital zircon ages from over- and underlying clastic rocks were determined. The Chinese samples are dominated by zircons with Neoproterozoic ages with a main peak between ca. 750
Ma and ca. 950
Ma and are characterised by the absence of Archaean ages. The Indian samples contain abundant Neoproterozoic zircon grains, but also contain Mesoproterozoic to Archaean zircons. For all samples, a local source area that provided the Neoproterozoic zircons is likely. A synchronous Neoproterozoic magmatic event in both cratons probably reflects the breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia and therefore the same tectono-magmatic event. Our results indicate a similar history for India and South China which both underwent at least one synchronous episode of crustal growth during the Neoproterozoic. In addition, our data set shows that both passive margin clastic sequences had the same source area for all zircons older than Neoproterozoic. Therefore we infer that India and South China were close to each other and along the same passive margin during the breakup of Rodinia in the Late Neoproterozoic.
► Main source for the Neoproterozoic Indian and Chinese samples is local bedrock. ► Synchronous magmatism in India and China was probably due to Rodinia breakup. ► We suggest a juxtaposed position for India and China along the Rodinia margin. ► Facies analyses suggest a proximal India and a distal South China craton. ► Zircon U-Pb- and Hf-data suggest Neoproterozoic input of juvenile material.
Globally, > 5–10 million people are estimated to be infected with Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1), of whom ~ 5% develop adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL). Despite advances in ...chemotherapy, overall survival (OS) has not improved in the 35 years since HTLV-1 was first described. In Europe/USA, combination treatment with zidovudine and interferon-α (ZDV/IFN-α) has substantially changed the management of patients with the leukemic subtypes of ATL (acute or unfavorable chronic ATL) and is under clinical trial evaluation in Japan. However, there is only a single published report of long-term clinical remission on discontinuing ZDV/IFN-α therapy and the optimal duration of treatment is unknown. Anecdotal cases where therapy is discontinued due to side effects or compliance have been associated with rapid disease relapse, and it has been widely accepted that the majority of patients will require life-long therapy. The development of molecular methods to quantify minimal residual disease is essential to potentially guide therapy for individual patients. Here, for the first time, we report molecular evidence that supports long-term clinical remission in a patient who was previously treated with ZDV/IFN-α for 5 years, and who has now been off all therapy for over 6 years.
With the so‐called advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) gaining more and more importance, the Fenton process has proven to be a particularly effective method for the treatment of wastewater. ...4‐Nitrophenol (4‐NP) was selected as the model pollutant to study the influence of temperature and solar illumination on its degradation rate in batch Fenton and photo‐Fenton experiments. Based upon these results, the insulated solar Fenton hybrid (ISFH) process was developed, combining solar‐chemical and solar‐thermal processes. With a flat‐plate reactor, it was found to be of particular importance to determine the optimal reactor depth for this continuous process, since excessive reactor depth increased the heat capacity, resulting in an increase of the heating period. Constructive limits were also clearly established.
In a 14 months old satin guinea pig Osteodystrophia fibrosa generalisata was diagnosed by clinical and x-ray examination. The guinea pig was treated palliativly with Meloxicam and Natriumrisedronate ...as well as periodic dental treatment. At the age of 3 years and 10 months the guinea pig died, but necropsy was denied by the owner.
We performed this study to assess the recovery period after neuromuscular blockade by electromyographic F-wave analysis, a method that supplies more information about more proximal parts of the motor ...system than conventionally used methods, e.g., mechanomyography (MMG). In 20 neurosurgical ASA physical status I or II patients anesthesia was induced and maintained with IV fentanyl and midazolam. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either 0.25 mg/kg mivacurium (MV group, n = 10) or 0.1 mg/kg pancuronium (PC group, n = 10) intraoperatively. MMG monitoring of the adductor pollicis muscle was performed continuously. F waves were recorded at the abductor pollicis muscle of the contralateral hand at train-of-four (TOF) ratios of 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.7, 0.75, 0.8, 0.85, 0.9, and 0.95. Recovery of F-wave amplitudes after neuromuscular blockade with pancuronium was significantly slower compared with mivacurium (P = 0.004) during the clinically important recovery period defined by MMG TOF ratios from 0.7 to 0.95. This electrophysiologic finding suggests a differential recovery of the motor system after administration of pancuronium and mivacurium not detected by MMG.
