The former measures any targeted entity's tail risk conditional on another entity being financially distressed; the latter represents the financial system through a set of nodes and a set of edges. In this study, we modify CoVaR along with its multivariate extension (MCoVaR) considering the joint conditioning events of multiple entities. We accomplish this by first employing a multivariate Johnson's SU risk model to capture the asymmetry and leptokurticity of the entities' asset returns. We then adopt the Cornish-Fisher expansion to account for the analytic higher-order conditional moments in modifying (M)CoVaR. In addition, we attempt to construct a conditional tail risk network. We identify its edges using a corresponding Delta (M)CoVaR reflecting the systemic risk contribution and further compute the strength and clustering coefficient of its nodes. When applying the financial system to global foreign exchange (forex) markets before and during COVID-19, we revealed that the resulting expanded (M)CoVaR forecast exhibited a better conditional coverage performance than its unexpanded version. Its superior performance appeared to be more evident over the COVID-19 period. Furthermore, our network analysis shows that advanced and emerging forex markets generally play roles as net transmitters and net receivers of systemic risk, respectively. The former (respectively, the latter) also possessed a high tendency to cluster with their neighbors in the network during (respectively, before) COVID-19. Overall, the interconnectedness and clustering tendency of the examined global forex markets substantially increased as the pandemic progressed.
Various organic pollutants so-called emerging pollutants (EPs), including active residues from pharmaceuticals, pesticides, surfactants, hormones, and personal care products, are increasingly being ...detected in numerous environmental matrices including water. The persistence of these EPs can cause adverse ecological and human health effects even at very small concentrations in the range of micrograms per liter or lower, hence called micropollutants (MPs). The existence of EPs/MPs tends to be challenging to mitigate from the environment effectively. Unfortunately, most of them are not removed during the present-day treatment plants. So far, a range of treatment processes and degradation methods have been introduced and deployed against various EPs and/or MPs, such as ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and enzyme-based treatments coupled with membrane filtrations. To further strengthen the treatment processes and to overcome the EPs/MPs effective removal dilemma, numerous studies have revealed the applicability and notable biocatalytic potentialities of laccases and peroxidases to degrade different classes of organic pollutants. Exquisite selectivity and unique catalytic properties make these enzymes powerful biocatalytic candidates for bio-transforming an array of toxic contaminants to harmless entities. This review focuses on the use of laccases and peroxidases, such as soybean peroxidase (SBP), horseradish peroxidase (HRP), lignin peroxidase (LiP), manganese peroxidase (MnP), and chloroperoxidase (CPO) as a greener oxidation route towards efficient and effective removal or degradation of EPs/MPs.

Recently, the increasing concentration and persistent appearance of antibiotics traces in the water streams are considered an issue of high concern. In this context, an array of antibiotics has been ...categorized as pollutants of emerging concern due to their complex and highly stable bioactivity, indiscriminate usage with ultimate release into water bodies, and notable persistence in environmental matrices. Moreover, antibiotics traces containing household sewage/drain waste and pharmaceutical wastewater effluents contain a range of bioactive/toxic organic compounds, inorganic salts, pharmaceutically-active ingredients, or a mixture of all, which possesses negative influences ranging from ecological pollution to damage biodiversity. Moreover, their uncontrolled and undesirable bioaccumulation also poses a potential threat to target and non-target organisms in the environment. Aiming to tackle this issue effectively, various detection, quantification, degradation, and redefining “removal” processes have been proposed and investigated based on physical, chemical, and biological strategies. Though both useful and side effects of antibiotics on humans and animals are usually investigated thoroughly following safety and toxicity measures, however, their direct or indirect environmental impacts are not well reviewed yet. Owing to the considerable research gap, the environmental perfectives of antibiotics traces and their effects on target and non-target populations have now become the topic of research interest. Based on literature evidence, over the past several years, numerous individual studies have been performed and published covering various aspects of antibiotics. However, a comprehensive compilation on enzyme-based degradation of antibiotics is still lacking and requires careful consideration. Hence, this review summarizes up-to-date literature on enzymes as biocatalytic systems, explicitly, free as well as immobilized forms and their effective exploitation for the degradation of various antibiotics traces and other pharmaceutically-active compounds present in the water bodies. It is further envisioned that the enzyme-based strategies, for antibiotics degradation or removal, discussed herein, will help readers for a better understanding of antibiotics persistence in the environment along with the associated risks and removal measures. In summary, the current research thrust presented in this review will additionally evoke researcher to engineer robust and sustainable processes to effectively remediate antibiotics-contaminated environmental matrices.

In the recent past, numerous new types of nanostructured carriers, as support matrices, have been engineered to advance the traditional enzyme immobilization strategies. The current research aimed to ...develop a robust enzyme-based biocatalytic platform and its effective deployment in the industrial biotechnology sectors at large and catalysis area, in particular, as low-cost biocatalytic systems. Suitable coordination between the target enzyme molecules and surface pendent multifunctional entities of nanostructured carriers has led an effective and significant contribution in myriad novel industrial, biotechnological, and biomedical applications. As compared to the immobilization on planar two-dimensional (2-D) surface, the unique physicochemical, structural and functional attributes of nano-engineered matrices, such as high surface-to-volume ratio, surface area, robust chemical and mechanical stability, surface pendant functional groups, outstanding optical, thermal, and electrical characteristics, resulted in the concentration of the immobilized entity being substantially higher, which is highly requisite from applied bio-catalysis perspective. Besides inherited features, nanostructured materials-based enzyme immobilization aided additional features, such as (1) ease in the preparation or green synthesis route, (2) no or minimal use of surfactants and harsh reagents, (3) homogeneous and well-defined core-shell nanostructures with thick enzyme shell, and (4) nano-size can be conveniently tailored within utility limits, as compared to the conventional enzyme immobilization. Moreover, the growing catalytic needs can be fulfilled by multi-enzymes co-immobilization on these nanostructured materials-based support matrices. This review spotlights the unique structural and functional attributes of several nanostructured materials, including carbon nanotubes, graphene, and its derivate constructs, nanoparticles, nanoflowers, and metal-organic frameworks as robust matrices for laccase immobilization. The later half of the review focuses on the applied perspective of immobilized laccases for the degradation of emergent contaminants, biosensing cues, and lignin deconstruction and high-value products.

Novel heterocyclic azomethine dyes were prepared by the reaction of anthracene-9-carbaldehyde with different heterocyclic amines under microwave irradiation. Structures of the azomethine dyes were ...confirmed by the elemental analysis, mass spectrometry and several spectroscopic techniques. We studied absorbance and fluorescence spectra of the azomethine dyes in various solvents. They are found to be good absorbers and emitters. We also report photophysical properties like, extinction coefficient, oscillator strength, stokes shift and transition dipole moment. This reflects physicochemical behaviors of synthesized dyes. In addition, their intramolecular charge transfer and nonlinear optical properties, supported by natural bond orbital technique, were also studied computationally by density functional theory. The negative nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption coefficient were measured for these dyes using the closed and open aperture Z-scan technique with a continuous wave helium-neon laser. These are found to vary linearly with solution concentration.
The synergistic integration of bio-catalysis engineering with nanostructured materials, as unique multifunctional carrier matrices, has emerged as a new interface of nanobiocatalysis (NBC). NBC is an ...emerging innovation that offers significant considerations to expand the designing and fabrication of robust catalysts at the nanoscale with improved catalytic characteristics for multipurpose bioprocessing applications. In addition, nanostructured materials with unique structural, physical, chemical, and functional entities have manifested significant contributions in mimicking the enzyme microenvironment. A fine-tuned enzyme microenvironment with an added-value of NBC offers chemo- regio- and stereo- selectivities and specificities. Furthermore, NBC is growing rapidly and will become a powerful norm in bio-catalysis with much controlled features, such as selectivity, specificity, stability, resistivity, induce activity, reaction efficacy, multi-usability, improved mass transfer efficiency, high catalytic turnover, optimal yield, ease in recovery, and cost-effectiveness. Considering the above critics and unique structural, physicochemical, and functional attributes, herein, we present and discuss advances in NBC and its bioprocessing applications in different fields. Briefly, this review is focused on four parts, i.e., (1) NBC as a drive towards applied nanobiocatalysts (as an introduction with opportunities), (2) promising nanocarriers to develop nanobiocatalysts, (3) applications in the fields of biotransformation, biofuel production, carbohydrate hydrolysis, bio−/nanosensing, detergent formulations, and extraction and purification of value-added compounds, and (4) current challenges, concluding remarks, and future trends.

Nanostructured materials constitute an interesting and novel class of support matrices for the immobilization of peroxidase enzymes. Owing to the high surface area, robust mechanical stability, ...outstanding optical, thermal, and electrical properties, nanomaterials have been rightly perceived as immobilization matrices for enzyme immobilization with applications in diverse areas such as nano-biocatalysis, biosensing, drug delivery, antimicrobial activities, solar cells, and environmental protection. Many nano-scale materials have been employed as support matrices for the immobilization of different classes of enzymes. Nanobiocatalysts, enzymes immobilized on nano-size materials, are more stable, catalytically robust, and could be reused and recycled in multiple reaction cycles. In this review, we illustrate the unique structural/functional features and potentialities of nanomaterials-immobilized peroxidase enzymes in different biotechnological applications. After a comprehensive introduction to the immobilized enzymes and nanocarriers, the first section reviewed carbonaceous nanomaterials (carbon nanotube, graphene, and its derivatives) as a host matrix to constitute robust peroxidases-based nanobiocatalytic systems. The second half covers metallic nanomaterials (metals, and metal oxides) and some other novel materials as host carriers for peroxidases immobilization. The next section vetted the potential biotechnological applications of the resulted nanomaterials-immobilized robust peroxidases-based nanobiocatalytic systems. Concluding remarks, trends, and future recommendations for nanomaterial immobilized enzymes are also given.
Nanobiocatalysts, in which enzyme molecules are integrated into/onto multifunctional materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have been fascinating and appeared as a new interface of ...nanobiocatalysis with multi-oriented applications. Among various nano-support matrices, functionalized MOFs with magnetic attributes have gained supreme interest as versatile nano-biocatalytic systems for organic bio-transformations. From the design (fabrication) to deployment (application), magnetic MOFs have manifested notable efficacy in manipulating the enzyme microenvironment for robust biocatalysis and thus assure requisite applications in several areas of enzyme engineering at large and nano-biocatalytic transformations, in particular. Magnetic MOFs-linked enzyme-based nano-biocatalytic systems offer chemo-regio- and stereo-selectivities, specificities, and resistivities under fine-tuned enzyme microenvironments. Considering the current sustainable bioprocesses demands and green chemistry needs, we reviewed synthesis chemistry and application prospects of magnetic MOFs-immobilized enzyme-based nano-biocatalytic systems for exploitability in different industrial and biotechnological sectors. More specifically, following a thorough introductory background, the first half of the review discusses various approaches to effectively developed magnetic MOFs. The second half mainly focuses on MOFs-assisted biocatalytic transformation applications, including biodegradation of phenolic compounds, removal of endocrine disrupting compounds, dye decolorization, green biosynthesis of sweeteners, biodiesel production, detection of herbicides and screening of ligands and inhibitors.
