We present the Pan-STARRS1 discovery of the long-lived and blue transient PS1-11af, which was also detected by Galaxy Evolution Explorer with coordinated observations in the near-ultraviolet (NUV) ...band. Four epochs of spectroscopy reveal a pair of transient broad absorption features in the UV on otherwise featureless spectra. Blackbody fits to the spectral energy distribution are inconsistent with the cooling, expanding ejecta of a SN, and the velocities of the absorption features are too high to represent material in homologous expansion near a SN photosphere. A full disruption model predicts higher bolometric luminosities, which would require most of the radiation to be emitted in a separate component at high energies where we lack observations. Three deep non-detections in the radio with the Very Large Array over the first two years after the event set strict limits on the production of any relativistic outflow comparable to Swift J1644+57, even if off-axis.

Invasive species pose serious threats to community structure and ecosystem function worldwide. The impacts of invasive species can be more pervasive than simple reduction of species numbers. By using ...7 years of data in a biological preserve in northern California, we documented the disassembly of native ant communities during an invasion by the Argentine ant. In sites without the Argentine ant, native ant communities exhibit significant species segregation, consistent with competitive dynamics. In sites with the Argentine ant, native ant communities appear random or weakly aggregated in species co-occurrence. Comparisons of the same sites before and after invasion indicate that the shift from a structured to a random community is rapid and occurs within a year of invasion. Our results show that invasive species not only reduce biodiversity but rapidly disassemble communities and, as a result, alter community organization among the species that persist.
•The impact of home vs hospital care is an important clinical question in the treatment of pulmonary exacerbations (PEx).•We assessed treatment responses for adults with CF treated for PEx with ...intravenous antibiotics at home, in the hospital, or both.•Compared to PEx treatment at home only, treatment in the hospital was associated with greater mean lung function, respiratory symptom, and weight improvements.
In the STOP2 (Standardized Treatment of Pulmonary Exacerbations-2) study, intravenous (IV) antimicrobial treatment duration for adults with cystic fibrosis (CF) experiencing pulmonary exacerbations (PEx) was determined based on initial treatment response. The impact of home vs hospital care remains an important clinical question in CF. Our hypothesis was that STOP2 participants treated at home would have less improvement in lung function compared to those treated in the hospital.
Treating clinicians determined PEx treatment location, which was a stratification factor for STOP2 randomization. Lung function, weight, and symptom recovery were evaluated by treatment location. Propensity scores and inverse probability treatment weighting were used to test for differences in clinical response by treatment location.
In all, 33% of STOP2 participants received IV antimicrobials in the hospital only, 46% both in the hospital and at home, and 21% at home only. Mean (95% CI) ppFEV1 improvement was significantly (p < 0.05) lower for those treated at home only, 5.0 (3.5, 6.5), compared with at home and in the hospital, 7.0 (5.9, 8.1), and in the hospital only, 8.0 (6.7, 9.4). Mean weight (p < 0.001) and symptom (p < 0.05) changes were significantly smaller for those treated at home only compared to those treated in the hospital only.
Compared to PEx treatment at home only, treatment in the hospital was associated with greater mean lung function, respiratory symptom, and weight improvements. The limitations of home IV therapy should be addressed in order to optimize outcomes for adults with CF treated at home.

C-reactive protein (CRP) has been proposed as a biomarker for pulmonary exacerbation (PEx) diagnosis and treatment response. CRP >75mg/L has been associated with increased risk of PEx treatment failure. We have analyzed CRP measures as biomarkers for clinical response during the STOP2 PEx study (NCT02781610).
CRP measures were collected at antimicrobial treatment start (V1), seven to 10 days later (V2), and two weeks after treatment end (V3). V1 log10CRP concentrations and log10CRP change from V1 to V3 correlations with clinical responses (changes in lung function and symptom score) were assessed by least squares regression. Odds of intravenous (IV) antimicrobial retreatment within 30 days and future PEx hazard associated with V1 and V3 CRP concentrations and V1 CRP >75 mg/L were studied by adjusted logistic regression and proportional hazards modeling, respectively.
In all, 951 of 982 STOP2 subjects (92.7%) had CRP measures at V1. V1 log10CRP varied significantly by V1 lung function subgroup, symptom score quartile, and sex, but not by age subgroup. V1 log10CRP correlated moderately with log10CRP change at V3 (r2=0.255) but less so with lung function (r2=0.016) or symptom (r2=0.031) changes at V3. Higher V1 CRP was associated with greater response. CRP changes from V1 to V3 only weakly correlated with lung function (r2=0.061) and symptom (r2=0.066) changes. However, V3 log10CRP was associated with increased odds of retreatment (P = .0081) and future PEx hazard (P = .0114).
Despite consistent trends, log10CRP change was highly variable with only limited utility as a biomarker of PEx treatment response.
We present the discovery of two ultraluminous supernovae (SNe) at z 0.9 with the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey. These SNe, PS1-10ky and PS1-10awh, are among the most luminous SNe ever discovered, ...comparable to the unusual transients SN 2005ap and SCP 06F6. Like SN 2005ap and SCP 06F6, they show characteristic high luminosities (M bol --22.5 mag), blue spectra with a few broad absorption lines, and no evidence for H or He. We have constructed a full multi-color light curve sensitive to the peak of the spectral energy distribution in the rest-frame ultraviolet, and we have obtained time series spectroscopy for these SNe. Given the similarities between the SNe, we combine their light curves to estimate a total radiated energy over the course of explosion of (0.9-1.4) X 1051 erg. We find photospheric velocities of 12,000-19,000 km s--1 with no evidence for deceleration measured across ~3 rest-frame weeks around light curve peak, consistent with the expansion of an optically thick massive shell of material. We show that, consistent with findings for other ultraluminous SNe in this class, radioactive decay is not sufficient to power PS1-10ky, and we discuss two plausible origins for these events: the initial spin-down of a newborn magnetar in a core-collapse SN, or SN shock breakout from the dense circumstellar wind surrounding a Wolf-Rayet star.
There is a well known correlation between the mass and metallicity of star-forming galaxies. Because mass is correlated with luminosity, this relation is often exploited, when spectroscopy is not ...available, to estimate galaxy metallicities based on single band photometry. However, we show that galaxy color is typically more effective than luminosity as a predictor of metallicity. This is a consequence of the correlation between color and the galaxy mass-to-light ratio and the recently discovered correlation between star formation rate (SFR) and residuals from the mass-metallicity relation. Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopy of ~180,000 nearby galaxies, we derive "LZC relations," empirical relations between metallicity (in seven common strong line diagnostics), luminosity, and color (in 10 filter pairs and four methods of photometry). We show that these relations allow photometric metallicity estimates, based on luminosity and a single optical color, that are ~50% more precise than those made based on luminosity alone; galaxy metallicity can be estimated to within ~0.05-0.1 dex of the spectroscopically derived value depending on the diagnostic used. Including color information in photometric metallicity estimates also reduces systematic biases for populations skewed toward high or low SFR environments, as we illustrate using the host galaxy of the supernova SN 2010ay. This new tool will lend more statistical power to studies of galaxy populations, such as supernova and gamma-ray burst host environments, in ongoing and future wide-field imaging surveys.
We present extensive multi-wavelength observations of the extremely rapidly declining Type Ic supernova (SN Ic), SN 2005ek. Reaching a peak magnitude of M sub(R) = -17.3 and decaying by ~3 mag in the ...first 15 days post-maximum, SN 2005ek is among the fastest Type I supernovae observed to date. The spectra of SN 2005ek closely resemble those of normal SN Ic, but with an accelerated evolution. There is evidence for the onset of nebular features at only nine days post-maximum. Spectroscopic modeling reveals an ejecta mass of ~0.3 M sub(middot in circle) that is dominated by oxygen (~80%), while the pseudo-bolometric light curve is consistent with an explosion powered by ~0.03 M sub(middot in circle) of radioactive super(56)Ni. Although previous rapidly evolving events (e.g., SN 1885A, SN 1939B, SN 2002bj, SN 2010X) were hypothesized to be produced by the detonation of a helium shell on a white dwarf, oxygen-dominated ejecta are difficult to reconcile with this proposed mechanism. We find that the properties of SN 2005ek are consistent with either the edge-lit double detonation of a low-mass white dwarf or the iron-core collapse of a massive star, stripped by binary interaction. However, if we assume that the strong spectroscopic similarity of SN 2005ek to other SNe Ic is an indication of a similar progenitor channel, then a white-dwarf progenitor becomes very improbable. SN 2005ek may be one of the lowest mass stripped-envelope core-collapse explosions ever observed. We find that the rate of such rapidly declining Type I events is at least 1%-3% of the normal SN Ia rate.

Odds of –26 CRISS change by Day 14 were greater in subjects with higher baseline CRISS (P=.006) and younger ages (P=.041).
: CRISS response has good dynamic range and may be a useful efficacy endpoint for PEx interventional trials. The optimal use of CRISS change as an endpoint remains uncharacterized.
We present observations and analysis of PS1-10bzj, a superluminous supernova (SLSN) discovered in the Pan-STARRS Medium Deep Survey at a redshift z = 0.650. Spectroscopically, PS1-10bzj is similar to ...the hydrogen-poor SLSNe 2005ap and SCP 06F6, though with a steeper rise and lower peak luminosity (M sub(bol) Asymptotically = to -21.4 mag) than previous events. We construct a bolometric light curve, and show that while PS1-10bzj's energetics were less extreme than previous events, its luminosity still cannot be explained by radioactive nickel decay alone. We explore both a magnetar spin-down and circumstellar interaction scenario and find that either can fit the data. PS1-10bzj is located in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South and the host galaxy is imaged in a number of surveys, including with the Hubble Space Telescope. The host is a compact dwarf galaxy (M sub(B) approximately - 18 mag, diameter lap800 pc), with a low stellar mass (M sub(*) approximately 2.4 x 10 super(7) M sub(odot)), young stellar population (tau sub(*) approximately 5 Myr), and a star formation rate of ~2-3 M sub(odot) yr super(-1). The specific star formation rate is the highest seen in an SLSN host so far (~100 Gyr super(-1)). We detect the OIII lambda4363 line, and find a low metallicity: 12 + (O/H) = 7.8 + or - 0.2 (Asymptotically = to 0.1 Z sub(odot)). Together, this indicates that at least some of the progenitors of SLSNe come from young, low-metallicity populations.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) pulmonary exacerbation (PEx) treatment guidelines suggest that Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) airway infection be treated with two antipseudomonal agents.
We retrospectively studied treatment responses for STOP2 PEx treatment trial (NCT02781610) participants with a history of Pa infection. Mean lung function and symptom changes from intravenous (IV) antimicrobial treatment start to Visit 2 (7 to 10 days later) were compared between those receiving one, two, and three+ antipseudomonal classes before Visit 2 by ANCOVA. Odds of PEx retreatment with IV antimicrobials within 30 days and future IV-treated PEx hazard were modeled by logistic and Cox proportional hazards regression, respectively. Sensitivity analyses limited to the most common one-, two-, and three-class regimens, to only IV/oral antipseudomonal treatments, and with more stringent Pa infection definitions were conducted.
Among 751 participants, 50 (6.7%) were treated with one antipseudomonal class before Visit 2, while 552 (73.5%) and 149 (19.8%) were treated with two and with three+ classes, respectively. Females and participants with a negative Pa culture in the prior month were more likely to be treated with a single class. The most common single, double, and triple class regimens were beta-lactam (BL; n = 42), BL/aminoglycoside (AG; n = 459), and BL/AG/fluoroquinolone (FQ; n = 73). No lung function or symptom response, odds of retreatment, or future PEx hazard differences were observed by number of antipseudomonal classes administered in primary or sensitivity analyses.
We were unable to identify additional benefit when multiple antipseudomonal classes are used to treat PEx in people with CF and Pa.
