The formation and deformation history of back-arc basins play a critical role in understanding the tectonics of plate interactions. Furthermore, opening of extensional back-arc basins during the ...overall convergence between Africa and Europe is a fundamental process in the overall tectonic evolution of the Mediterranean and adjacent areas. In this frame, Miocene tectonic evolution of the western Pannonian Basin of Central Europe and its connection to inherited Cretaceous structures of the Eastern Alpine nappes are presented.
Revision of published and addition of new structural and thermochronological data, as well as seismic profiles from the western Pannonian Basin is complemented by high-resolution thermo-mechanical numerical modeling in order to propose a new physically consistent tectono-sedimentary model for the basin evolution. The onset of extension is dated as ~25–23 Ma, and higher rates are inferred between 19 and 15 Ma at the south-western part of the area (Pohorje, Kozjak Domes, Murska Sobota Ridge, and Mura-Zala Basin). Rift initiation involved the exhumation of the middle part of the Austroalpine nappe pile along low-angle detachment faults and mylonite zones. The Miocene low-angle shear zones could reactivate major Cretaceous thrust boundaries, the exhumation channel of ultra-high-pressure rocks of the Pohorje Dome, or Late Cretaceous extensional structures. Miocene extension was associated with granodiorite and dacite intrusions between 18.64 and 15 Ma. The Pohorje pluton intruded at variable depth from ~4 to 16–18 km and experienced ductile stretching, westward tilting, and asymmetric exhumation of its eastern side. Terrestrial early Miocene (Ottnangian to Karpatian, 19–17.25 Ma) syn-rift depositional environment in supradetachment basins evolved to near-shore and bathyal one by the middle Miocene (Badenian, 15.97–12.8 Ma). Deformation subsequently migrated eastwards to the western part of the Transdanubian Range (Keszthely Hills) and to newly formed grabens. In this formerly emerged terrestrial area active faulting started at 15–14.5 Ma and continued through the late Miocene almost continuously up to ~8 Ma but basically terminated in the Mura-Zala Basin by ~15 Ma (early Badenian). These observations suggest a ~200 km shift of active faulting, basin formation, and related syn-tectonic sedimentation from the SW (Pohorje and Mura-Zala Basin) toward the Pannonian Basin center. Building on the above described observational and modeling data makes the Pannonian Basin an ideal natural laboratory for understanding the coupling between deep Earth and surface processes.
•Variable extensional structures characterize the western Pannonian Basin.•Exhumation of deeper crustal rocks along detachments occurred in the Miocene.•Depocenters and faulting shifted from basin margin toward basin center.•Thermomechanical modelling predicts depocenter migration within 12 Ma.•Miocene extensional structures reactivated and were bounded to inherited weakness zones.
Prof. Pál Greguss (*1889, †1984) was a leading figure in European (palaeo)xylotomy. His collection of types and figured specimens from the Cenozoic of Hungary published in the two monographs (Fossil ...gymnosperm woods in Hungary from the Permian to the Pliocene and Tertiary angiosperm woods in Hungary), now stored in the Palaeobotanical Collection of the Botanical Department in the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest, is of great value. Many types were considered lost, but the present reappraisal, conducted by the first author during several visits to Budapest between 2009 and 2016, uncovered 18 types, 35 figured specimens and 1 additional specimen, 54 items in total. In the text, all specimens are briefly presented with their systematical attribution, information on their numbers, localities and their corrected geological age. The text is completed by two photo-plates and one summary table.
The Pannonian Basin, a major back-arc basin in the Alpine–Carpathian orogenic belt, experienced its syn-rift phase during the Early–Middle Miocene. Studying coeval sediments can provide important ...information on the initiation of the extension. This paper investigates syn-rift deposits in the Mecsek Mts. in SW Hungary from a tectono-sedimentary aspect, using stratigraphy, palaeontology and structural observations to constrain palaeoenvironments and their tectonic background. Our study shows that in the Mecsek area the widespread Early Miocene fluvial sedimentation was not directly followed by inundation by the Central Paratethys sea, instead, a phase of lacustrine deposition in the Karpatian–Early Badenian (late Burdigalian–early Langhian) preceded the marine flooding. The lake sediments have a low-diversity but abundant, endemic mollusc and ostracod fauna, dominated by the bivalve
Congeria boeckhi
and the gastropod
Ferebithynia vadászi
. Identical faunas at various sites indicate that “Lake Mecsek” was a single water body, covering the present-day Mecsek Mts. and their surroundings. Wedge-shaped clastic bodies along faults, fault scarp breccias and semi-soft sediment deformations suggest that extensional tectonic activity related to the rifting of the Pannonian Basin played a role in lake basin formation. The accumulation of lakes was probably also enhanced by increased precipitation during the Miocene Climatic Optimum. The Central Paratethys flooded the area in the Badenian (Langhian) and deposited normal marine sediments over the lacustrine ones. Considering the fauna, the sedimentary succession, the structural background and evolution history, the Mecsek area seems to be part of the Illyrian bioprovince and related to the Dinaride Lake System.
A Zsámbéki-medence földtani térképezése során részletesen felvettük a Strázsa-hegy kőfejtője által feltárt kainozoos rétegsort, valamint elvégeztük az őslénytani, rétegtani és tektonikai adatok ...elemzését. A középső-triász dolomitra viszonylag vékony és hézagos középső–felső-miocén rétegsor települ, amelynek alsó szakaszát felső-badeni, középső szakaszát szarmata finomszemcsés sziliciklasztitok (kőzetliszt–középszemcsés homok) és karbonátok alkotják. Az e fölött üledékhézaggal települő édesvízi mészkő a Zsámbéki-medence felső-miocén (pannóniai) rétegsorának bázisképződménye. A Zsámbéki-medencében általános elterjedésű pannóniai üldékek a Strázsa-hegyen lepusztultak, az algás édesvízi mészkőre közvetlenül pleisztocén alluviális-proluviális rétegsor települ. A szedimentológiai jellegek és az ősmaradványok elemzése alapján rekonstruált neogén üledékképződési környezet több vonatkozásban is egyéni jellegeket mutat. A késő-badeni során kezdetben csökkent sótartalmú, partmenti védett lagúnában zajlott az üledékképződés a Vértessomló–Nagykovácsi-zóna mentén kiemelkedő paleomorfológiai hát (sziget vagy félsziget) mögött, amelybe jelentős mennyiségű finomszemcsés törmelék áramlott. Ezzel egy időben a sziget déli oldalán sziklás abráziós part rekonstruálható. A lagúnába a késő-badeni során édesvízi hozzáfolyás zajlott, ami a szarmata során elzáródott, végül a késő-miocén elejére tavi környezet jött létre. A Strázsa-hegyen keresztülhaladó Ny–K-i csapású Vértessomló–Nagykovácsi-zóna neogén–kvarter szerkezetfejlődésén belül több szerkezeti fázist sikerült azonosítani. Ezek közül a legidősebb a triász dolomit kismértékű rátolódása a középső-miocén rétegsorra, amely a késő-badeni sziliciklasztos rétegsor leülepedésével egyidős lehet. A tektonikai zóna szarmata aktivitására utal a rétegsor szélsőségesen vékony kifejlődése és diszkordáns települése. A következő szerkezeti fázist a pannóniai édesvízi mészkövön észlelt oldalirányú vetőkarcok jelzik, ez a fázis megfeleltethető a Gerecse D11-es transzpressziós szerkezeti fázisának. A szerkezeti zóna legfiatalabb deformációja során zajlott kiemelkedés a pannon rétegsor lepusztulását eredményezte, amely a pliocén–kora-pleisztocénre tehető.

A genust eddig a Paratethys térségéből csak burgenlandi és nyugat-ukrajnai lelőhelyekről írták le. A Budapesten megtalált mindkét Brissus egyed jó megtartású. Az egyik példányt a Brissus abeli (Reidl, 1941) fajba lehetett besorolni, ami csak a Paratethys késő-badeni korú üledékeiből ismert. Ezen felül előkerült egy az egész európai-mediterrán térségben eddig ismeretlen Brissus forma, amely morfológiai bélyegeit tekintve egyik európai vagy egyéb mediterrán formával sem egyezik meg. Emellett hordoz sajátságos morfológiai elemeket is, úgy, mint az erősen anterior helyzetű apicalis lemez, az anterior szirompár által bezárt szög mértéke, valamint a periproct elhelyezkedése. Mindezek alapján a forma új fajként való elkülönítése indokolt, melynek neve – Mihály Sándor tiszteletére – Brissus mihalyi nov. sp.
Maga a Brissus genus ma széles földrajzi elterjedésű, de kis egyedszámú; a ma élő együtteseket részletesen nem vizsgálták. Az európai neogénben ritka, így a magyarországi megjelenés a forma eocéntől máig zajló evolúciójának megismeréséhez is fontos információt nyújt.
The emergence of smart wearable devices has gradually introduced a vast array of functions that may greatly serve the everyday needs of users. Although their ever-increasing list of capabilities may ...be compensated for by intuitive design, users may still have numerous reasons to engage with their user manuals. In this paper, we present four research efforts on the user manuals of smart wearable devices. Our work tackles various influence factors, investigates user behavior, and studies how the device itself affects user manual engagement, as well as the other way around. The research efforts address user experience and behavior, personal preference, device attributes, and the performance metrics of user manuals. We specifically studied smartwatches and smart bands, and explored engagement with medical-purpose smart wearables and their user manuals. As a novelty of our contribution, we classify test participants as regular users, professional users, and technical writers, based on their connection to user manuals, and separately analyze their responses to our questionnaire-based research efforts. The obtained results indicate that user experience and device complexity as influence factors have a statistically significant impact on user manual engagement for regular users, and highlight how regular users and technical writers differ in preference and search-related tasks.
