Of 18 baseball players with abnormalities of the humeral capitellum detected by ultrasonography, 15 agreed to radiographic examination and were diagnosed with osteochondritis dissecans of the humeral capitellum.
Abstract Introduction Avulsion fractures of the tuber calcanei classically occur after falling on the foot, due to the forced dorsiflexion and the sudden contraction of the Achilles tendon. Direct ...trauma to the back of the leg and a direct penetrating injury are also infrequent causes and may be observed predominantly in younger patients. Presentation of case We present a case of an open tuber calcaneus fracture resulting from a penetrating trauma in a 37-year-old patient. The fracture was reduced through the open wound and fixed using two cannulated screws. Bone union was radiologically and clinically observed at the end of the first year. Discussion During a physical altercation, the posterior of the patient's heel was struck directly with a meat cleaver. The position of the patient during the trauma can be considered to have increased the severity and depth of the injury. In addition, even though the injury radiologically resembled an avulsion fracture and was caused by direct trauma, the fact that it was open and that the mechanism of injury differed from the norm means that it should not be evaluated as a classic avulsion fracture in the full sense. Emergency open reduction and internal fixation were applied to an open calcaneal tuberosity fracture, and the patient was started on intravenous antibiotic therapy. Conclusion Surgical techniques are successful in the treatment of open tuber calcanei fractures and an open intervention is usually required. Using cannulated screws is a good treatment option.
Abstract Introduction Synovial chondromatosis is a mono-articular arthropathy rarely seen in diarthrodial joints. The classic treatment for synovial chondromatosis is open arthrotomy, synovectomy and ...complete removal of the free fragments. With recent advances in arthroscopic techniques and methods, the indications for arthroscopic treatment have been extended. Presentation of case A 33-year old female presented with complaints of pain in the right shoulder. On the radiological examination, there were seen to be multiple calcified radio-opaque lesions filling all area of the glenohumeral joint. On computed tomography (CT) examination, again multiple radio-opaque free fragments were determined. Arthroscopy was applied to the right shoulder. The free fragments were completely removed. Approximately 33 free fragments, ranging in size from 0.5 to 1.3 cm, were removed. Discussion Cases of synovial chondromatosis in the shoulder have been rarely reported in literature. Generally the disease is self-limiting. Clinically, symptoms are generally not specific. Restrictions in the joint range of movement occur associated with the mechanical effect of the free fragments and in periods of active use, local pain and swelling may be seen in the shoulder. Simple removal of the free fragments, others have stated that removal with synovectomy is necessary to prevent recurrence of the cartilaginous metaplastic focus. Recurrence rates vary from 0 to 31%. Conclusion Arthroscopic surgery can be successfully applied in the treatment of synovial chondromatosis. The advantages of the method include good visualisation during surgery, low morbidity and early healing.
Highlights • Hydatidosis represents the most significant parasitic disorder in the Mediterranean countries. • Localization of the primary cyst hydatid infection in the extremity is rare. • Primary ...musculoskeletal cyst hydatid generally affects the proximal muscle groups. • Due to the fact that it leads to a mass formation, hydatid cysts may be mistaken for soft tissue tumors. • MR is the golden standard of diagnosis and detection of multilocular polycystic lesions. • Cases of concomitant neurologic findings and complaints secondary to peripheral nerve compression are very rare.
Highlights • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) are more frequently observed morbidly obese patients. • As the use of thrombolytic therapy has become more common in the treatment ...of myocardial infarction (MI) and PE, acute compartment syndrome (ACS) has been reported as a rare complication of thrombolytic therapy. • As soon as the diagnosis of compartment syndrome is made, an emergency fasciotomy should be performed. • Close follow-up is required to avoid wound healing problems after the fasciotomy.
microRNA dependent gene expression regulation has roles in diverse processes such as differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis. Therefore, deregulated miRNA expression has functional importance ...for various diseases, including cancer. miR-125b is among the commonly downregulated miRNAs in breast cancer cells . Therefore we aimed to characterize the effects of miR-125b expression in MCF7 breast cancer cell line (BCCL) to better understand its roles in tumorigenesis. Here, we investigated mir-125 family members

In economic litrature, there is a concensus on technological innovations have catalystic impact on economic growth. On the other hand, the discussions about effects of innovations on unemployment still continue. In this study; the debate between innovations and unemployment is examined in emerging market economies. Emerging markets are economies which are classifed in developing countries, also have some features of developed countries. While enjoying high economic growth rates, those economies also struggle with high unemployment rates. According to the findings of the study; there is a negative relationship between technological development and unemployment in emerging market economies. However, the strength of this negative relationship is weak.
While most studies in pediatric urology investigate the clinical results, very few explore the relationship between surgery and quality of life and psychosocial well-being in pediatric urology ...practice. The determination of the effects of the surgical method on the quality of life (QoL) is of increasing importance.
This study investigated the effect of surgery type on the postoperative QoL and psychological well-being of pediatric urological surgery patients.
A total of 151 children and adolescents (4–18 years old) undergoing elective urological surgery between September 2020 and July 2021 were evaluated preoperatively; those who currently had psychiatric disorders were excluded. Of the 98 patients undergoing subsequent detailed preoperative assessment using standardized instruments to evaluate QoL and depression and anxiety symptom levels, only 63 could be re-evaluated postoperatively at a 6-month follow-up. Additionally, preoperative parental psychiatric symptom load was assessed using standardized self-report forms.
The patients were classified into two categories for analysis–open versus endourological surgery and major versus minor surgery. In the latter category, there was a significant increase in the postoperative QoL in children undergoing minor urological surgery (p = 0.037). Furthermore, the table depicted the regression analysis indicating the predictors for lower postoperative QoL. Those predictors were higher parental preoperative psychiatric symptom load, a greater number of previous surgeries, and female gender (p < 0.001, adjusted R2 = 0.304).
Postoperative QoL of children/adolescents undergoing pediatric urology surgery is affected more by the patient's preoperative medical condition and the psychological status of the patient's parents, rather than the surgical method opted for.Summary TableThe predictors for lower postoperative quality of life scoresSummary TableThe PedsQL Child/Adolescent Report Total ScorepOdds ratio (B)%95 C.
